Title: Custom Characters & Artwork - Stylus For Hire! - How hot can a game sprite get?
Post by: waveryder on December 29, 2007, 08:52:21 am
Following requests from a number of forum members, i've decided to "prostitute" my artistic skills and offer everyone on the forum the oppurtunity to have custom character artwork for their cabs. So im proud to present...............

As well as standard CP, marquee etc. artwork I offer completely customised character design avaliable at 300dpi via digital transfer or sent to you on CDR. Please note I do not offer print services; for printing I recommend heading on over to mamemarquees. All example work is for sale at $40 / £20, however custom artwork will be charged based upon artwork complexity. Please remember I do this for fun and to benefit the community. Custom work requires a lot of time that I could be spending playing Guitar Hero!!

Here's an example of a quick character I created yesterday night after a particular long session of "rock the 80's"

First the character is roughly sketched to give that "Rock Chick" Feel!

Next the character is painted, this particular character is airbrushed
(http://www.btinternet.com/~waveryder/Example/RC_paint.png)

Finally detailling and other side art elements are done resulting in...

For a clearer view of the final piece http://www.btinternet.com/~waveryder/Example/RC_Example.png (http://www.btinternet.com/~waveryder/Example/RC_Example.png)

Anyone that requires my "stylus for hire" feel free to PM me or email me at bubblegum.betty@gmail.com

(More examples will follow. All example work is for sale)

No "process" on this one just the finished piece. It is consturcted in the same way as "Rock Chick" above but is designed for a more subtle look, softer airbrushing and softer lines. This one is designed for sideart and kickplate usage. But is avaliable for wherever you want on your cabs. So im proud to present..............."Ice"

Last example for a while as I gotta keep this in perspective, I have a life after all. LOL. Anyway this is again a different style more in line with my Bubble Gum Betty art. It is hard shaded rather than airbrushed. This again is 300dpi an scalable to practically any size. Again designed for sideart but the character can be drawn to fit any part of your cabinet. So im proud to present..............."Vicky"

Just finished a commisioned piece for Green Giant. He wanted Bubblegum Betty but thats a no no! So I produced him a character on the same lines. The brief required a character in a bent down position with candy floss styled hair. I used a mixture of Hard and Airbrushed shading on this one. Thankfully Green Giant left a lot of this one upto me. So im proud to present..............."Victorious Secret"

Title: Custom Characters & Artwork - ROUND 1 FIGHT!!!
Post by: waveryder on January 12, 2008, 09:08:25 am
Question: Can you produce other kinds of character artwork? i.e game characters etc. or do you only draw large chested girls?
Answer: Well I can draw other things apart from large chested girls..................but why would I want to!!
                                                                                                                                          (googletalk chat with potential customer)

For all you "Beat 'em up" fans, heres a little treat. This image originally appeared in streetfighter comics by the udon crew. Nice picture but a bit too "comicy" in style for my liking, but the image was so effective. I loved it so much I just had to draw it! I drew this one from a tiny 72dpi jpeg I found on google images. It was sketched at A3 resolution due to its complexity. I inked it in Illustrator and painted it at A3 300dpi in Photoshop. It is HUGE!! I painted this with hard shading as it gives a great stenciled look to the finished piece making it much more fitting than the original for cabinet use. The black glow around it is just for display purposes. This piece could be used anywhere on your cab or even your frontend. It was a mammoth task reproducing this one and frankly after 2 days drawing and inking and 2 days coloring this I need a nap! So im proud to present..............."Ryu & Chun-li Round 1"

Im starting to put together a website for my custom art. I could really use somewhere to put it. Due to the high graphic content my free 5mb from my ISP just wont cut it. Any offers of space would be greatfully recieved. I would also be open to trade for some custom art.

Oh my god!

Cant wait to see this!

C&D is one of my favourite games of all time. Its definitely the one i spent most of my hard earn't 20p's on! I loved it even though it was set to single play with no continue. I could get up to the first time you fight Slice on one credit, I think I may have beat him once. It wasn't until I got MAME (suprise, suprise it was the first game I played) that I could set it to play with continues (and free credits  ;D). I was in heaven that day :)

I'm almost tempted to change my cocktail theme if there is going to be artwork! Maybe not for this project though.

If you do do something with some/all (here's hoping) of the characters I would definitely be up for buying or splitting the costs to get some art mounted on a canvas.

I think a 1.5M x 1M montage of some of the characters would be awesome. Maybe with the Cadillac behind them and possibly the jungle with some dinosaurs from the 2nd level behind that?  Or maybe one of the other backdrops? A lot to ask I know but a man can dream  :)

I thought id try out some new artwork styles in photoshop. And here is the result. Rather than just the character I have decided to use it as the basis for some completed cabinet work. This work although designed by me is based on a frame from the SF comics. The piece has been redrawn, re-inked  and hand painted at 300dpi. It looks amazing when printed at full resolution. This piece is designed for Marquee and Kickplate use. It is 28" by 8" which seems to be a common marquee size.

It can be resized on request. The test logo I have placed on the image can be removed and replaced with your own, just send me a 300dpi version of your logo. The image measureses 28"x 8" / 66 x 20 cm / 7800 x 2400 pixels and is avaliable in the format of your choice. This image will not be retired on sale as by request I have begun to produce some more budget artwork. This piece is for sale for $25 and can be used within your project as much as you like.

Anyone that requires my "stylus for hire" feel free to PM me or email me at bubblegum.betty@gmail.com Cheers!

(This piece of artwork is for sale at $25/£12.50)

I hope you're still doing this when I get done with my cabinet. Probably in four to six months from now. I wonder if you'd be interested in doing some street fighter vs x-men art for my marquee and sides. Maybe my control panel. Depends on how much money I have left in the budget for the build. I'd love to see Gambit and Rogue done in your art style. I'll contact you about what I want exactly when it's about time for me to put this stuff on.

Havent posted any examples for a while as I have been doing a lot of custom work. I am going to wait until the cabs are finished so that the cab creators can post the pics of the artwork on their project threads first. Im still working on some stock sale artwork. Im produceing a lot of themed control panels at the moment:

Marvel VS Capcom
Mortal Kombat
Dragons Lair (So hard drawing like don Bluth!)

As well as all the custom requests that I've had in. I have no plans to shut up shop until my work isnt wanted anymore. I think that'll be a while as lets face it how many artists would sell there work and time for my prices! I Like helping the community and after this many years as member, giving something back.

I also wanted to add that all of my stock work, posted on this thread is also avaliable for trade. Im always looking for parts for my cab and am happy to discuss trading arcade parts for any of the example work posted. I dont trade for custom work though im afraid. Im especially interested in a steering wheel and pedal setup for my cab.

Anyway back to slaving over a computer screen and stylus  ;)

Title: Custom Characters & Artwork - Stylus For Hire! - Akimmy Saved From The Wastebin!
Post by: waveryder on February 12, 2008, 01:12:49 pm
Last post till I get upto date with the commisions I've got. Some exciting stuff! Anyway, let me tell you a story:
Along Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Far Away.......(sorry watching StarWars lol) Different kind of story. This story doesn't involve brothers, sisters, fathers or sons, no this is an artwork story. (Your asleep already arent you?)

WAKE UP! Right down to the story. I get many requests for artwork, usually from people that dont really have an idea what they want until they see it. To this end I produce rough sketchwork. Usually a piece will require 1-3 sketches before a client will agree what they want. So what happens to the other pieces......I'm glad you asked. Usually an unwanted sketch ends up in my waste bin or as a shopping list or as paper for my little boys crayon practice. Sometimes it can even end up as tiolet paper when I forgot to change the roll and cant shimmy downstairs with my trousers round my ankles. But sometimes, just sometimes, I think a sketch is so good it would be a an "art crime" to not finish it. This is one such piece of artwork.

The client requested a cutey sexy anime styled girl (ha! just what I like) and I produced this sketch to illustrate my idea.
After watching Perfect Blue the other night I was all CHAMed up and that tends to be how my artwork is affected. So I produced a character based upon Japanese Pop Idols. Unfortunately my client didn't go for it, as is the way sometimes and went in a completely different direction. What to do with the sketch, I couldnt throw it away and the longer it sat on my desk the more it bugged me that she wasnt finished and had no face! So that was it I couldnt bear it anymore and this morning went straight to work!!!

This piece is dedicated to "NoddyP & Victor Meldrew" Who check my latest artwork religiously. This piece is 16" x 16" at 300dpi and measures a whopping 4770x4770 pixels and is avaliable in the format of your choice. It can be resised higher than A0 with no loss of quality. This image will not be retired on sale as by request. This piece is for sale for $50 and can be used within your project as much as you like. This is one of my favourite character pieces and almost tempts me to get another cab on the go just so I can put it up somewhere! So without further ado Im proud to present.............."Akimmy"

what?! that artwork was yours!? i have the dragon's lair comic book with that artwork on front cover! so that's where it came from! MAN!

Perhaps you should read the actual post. It states quite clearly it is tribute piece! Perhaps you would notice if you actually read this thread that all images I have redrawn from existing images state the words, "redrawn, tribute and not retired piece" I always state quite clearly if the work im selling is custom or redrawn. This piece is  for sale as it takes an incredible amount of work to redraw and create an infinitley scalable vector from of a 72dpi scan! The artwork belongs to me as I created it! I sell it for a tiny fee (Have you seen the exchange rate!) to cover my time and the work involved!

I dont know what you are attempting to accomplish with this thread bossyman15? In future please think before disrupting a thread that it is clear you have not even read. Please dont post image inserted quotes in this thread as it is an advertising thread and  graphic heavy. Please dont post your issues in this thread as it is an advertising thread and not a place for disscussion.

As always, amazing work!!!  If I might suggest a correction to Playtime, how would she look if you removed her left arm and instead complete the halo background (i.e. you can't see her left arm because it's being used as support behind her hair).

That might look even better!!!

Keep up the AMAZING work!

Cheers for the feedback and constructive idea. It's always harder with these stock pieces. I cant help but look at a piece of non commissioned artwork from my point of view. It's much nicer when people take the time to give an idea or a constructive criticism. I am doing this for the community after all and its always good to hear what people think, gives me a better idea of what people are looking for. So with that in mind, to show my appreciation, here's a piece with a few revisions dedicated to JoeB (its not for sale!) So Im proud to present.............."JoeB's Playtime"

Snake, the cads and dinos art is coming (you said no hurry!!!) I've decided to go in a new direction with it. Coincedence you were think a light box, I was redrawing the whole cast + car + dino's for a "blacklight" print at A1. Imagine arcade games mixed with the 70's. Boggles the mind doesn't it. Been messing with blacklights with my cabs external lighting and wanted to try it for some gameroom artwork. Anyway the full line art is being drawn at size and is presently sitting on my ezel but its nowhere near finished. Gimme a couple of weeks and I'll have something to blow your mind. Get ready for a "Groovy Suprise!"

You are doing good work for the board, and I feel that this is only the begining of some great work you are going to do. Post by: waveryder on February 23, 2008, 01:15:23 pm
just thought i'd show my latest commission piece. This was a monster piece to produce as it's my first 4 player panel with all the trimmings. My client game me his specs for controls and layout and general theme, the rest was left upto me.........as long as it had a ninja somewhere in it. My client gave lots of feedback and followed the whole production process. My client was pleased so I thought i'd share it, I dont usually do this kind of work as I prefer to produce character based artwork, so we agreed that I could put at least one character on it (even if its only a silhouette  ;)) So Im proud to present.............."The Ninjacade CP"

IMPORTANT:
Due to an argument with my ISP provider which resulted in me making a comparrison between his mother and a baboon's bottom, I will be loosing my Internet access sometime between now and tuesday. I will attempt to access my email at least once a day but cant promise. So if you want to get in touch with me or are awaiting sketches/artwork please be understanding. I should have access again in about 5 days as my new ISP has to lay a cable under my driveway.

Getting dicked around a lot at the moment. In the passed week I've had to contend with 2 customers not paying and 1 customer claiming intellectual property infringment. YAY IM BACK!!! Phew 7 days with out net access and I was getting the shakes. Apologies if I have yet to answer artwork request PM's and emails got a lot to go through. Anyway I actually made use of the time away from the net and did some artwork. This is my TMNT tribute piece. No April in this one as although she has big hair and big.....well you get the idea, she wears a yellow jumpsuit and I just cant forgive that! So anyway this piece is all created at 300dpi and is big enough to cover the side of an original TMNT cabinet. It is free hand painted and has a nice urban turtles feel. This piece features Marquee/Sideart and Control Panel. Each piece can be adapted (within reason) to your cabs dimensions or layout. So Im proud to present.............."Turtle Power"

Marquee $30
(http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5098/tmntmarqueebs6.png)

Sideart $125

Control Panel $60

Anyone that requires my "stylus for hire" feel free to PM me or email me at bubblegum.betty@gmail.com Cheers!

I agree!! waveryder does awesome work and I hired him to do some for me which I'm very pleased with. I think this could open up a can of worms with copyrights though.

Just my thoughts.

There's nothing more satisfying than a nice can of worms! But I think in this case I can't see Konami/Mattel/Marvel Comics and the endless other turtles copyright holders caring about a one off tribute piece. I mean lets face it I think they would be likely to castrate the providers of the original artwork reproductions before me. But if they do I'll claim temporary insanity caused by the theme tune playing over and over in my head for the 3 days it took to produce!!  ;)

Star Wars art is "problematic" to say the least. I have done loads before in different styles for other non arcade related projects and the problems is always the same. Theres always a bunch of hardcore "jedi" waiting to tear you a new one for daring to paint Princess Leia in her gold bikinni  ;)

I have a life outside of this forum, which tends not to mesh with running this service. If you require something in a hurry feel free to ask one of the other members who produce artwork or buy something stock. My work takes time to produce  and I presently have 5 complete cabinet pieces on the go with more coming in each day. I manage to get on here once a day if i'm lucky (busy busy busy at the moment) to check whats going on within the community. I will answer my emails and pms when I have time. Sorry if thats not what you want to hear but this "service" has to fit in with my life. Its not a "business" as for the most part US DOLLARS are worthless over here, so im afraid its not my priority. I continue to produce artwork for people but im sorry I dont work "in a hurry".

Post by: waveryder on April 27, 2008, 10:03:52 am
Been busy doing lots of Cab artwork but managed to get some time to do another budget piece.  Although this marquee has been designed by me it is based on the character select artwork from Streetfighter HD. The piece has been redrawn, re-inked  and hand painted at 300dpi.  This piece is designed for Marquee and Kickplate use. It is 28" by 8" which seems to be the most  common marquee size, but can be resised to your marquee dimesions.

The image measures 28"x 8" / 66 x 20 cm / 7800 x 2400 pixels and is avaliable in the format of your choice. This image will not be retired on sale as by request I have begun to produce some more budget artwork. This piece is for sale for $25 and can be used within your project as much as you like.

Anyone that requires my "stylus for hire" feel free to PM me or email me at bubblegum.betty@gmail.com Cheers!

(This piece of artwork is for sale at $25/£ ??.?? who could begin to guess the exchange rate!)

Title: Re: Custom Characters & Artwork - Stylus For Hire! - GAME OVER!
Post by: waveryder on May 20, 2008, 01:03:25 pm
After a comment I left on another thread pertaining to the "Meteor Boobs!" artwork I had an urge to draw a piece of my all time favourite pieces of videogame artwork. This is based on a cover image for "Game Over2" by Bob Walkin. I couldnt seem to find an image of this to work from so its done entirely from memory. I remember this image quite clearly' as a young lad I was quite shocked by the amazingly large boobs I mean detail in the piece, It was the first large breasted character I ever drew. Ironically I was poor so never got to play the game. I doubt it would've measured up. Anyway, this piece is designed for sideart use. It is absolutely huge! and painted completely freehand at 300dpi. So Im proud to present.............."Game Over"

The image measures 28"x 39" / 71 x 100 cm / 8455 x 11811 pixels and is avaliable in the format of your choice. This image will not be retired on sale.  This piece is for sale for $150 and can be used within your project as much as you like.

Anyone that requires my "stylus for hire" feel free to PM me or email me at bubblegum.betty@gmail.com Cheers!

Haven't posted any new work in a while but I've been busy trying to get my artbook and gallery together over at Deviant Art. I have a bunch of projects on the go and example work that'll be posted soon. Anyway just letting the BYOAC forum know I haven't vanished. Finally found some time to do some new arcade artwork. Imageshack has decided to delete all of my example work for some unknown reason??? So I'm posting this one directly through the forum.....hopefully Saint wont mind. I'm still looking for some web space if someone can donate me some. Anyway, this piece is a single layer "airbrush" painting at 300dpi in Pshop. It is designed for side art use but can easily be adpated. It is absolutely huge and has no restrictions on size! So I'm proud to present.............."Get Over Here!!"

The image comes in any size and is available in the format of your choice. This image will not be retired on sale.  This piece is for sale for $125 and can be used within your project as much as you like.

Im considering producing some canvas prints of arcade artwork. If anyone is interested in this kind of thing let me know.

........lets go see him together, I got nothing better to do.

Haven't posted any stock for a while as I've been way to busy doing artwork for forum members. As they unvail there artwork i'll be posting more of it on my artwork thread for those interested.....

Just finished a piece for Somunny's ARK Project. Check it out here
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76255.0;all (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76255.0;all)
This was a real pleasure to paint. I've been trying to convince potential customers to go for something....well a little bit different on their cabs for almost a year now, but of course no takers :( When Somunny asked if anyone was interested in painting his CP artwork I just had to do it. Religious art on an arcade machine!!! Fantastic. Here's what he sent me:

The original was scanned at 600dpi and was huge. The first thing to do was to start matching the colours. Armed with only a HDTV screen grab, some pantone markers and a A0 print out of the scan I went to work. It took over 30 layers to get the image cleaned and flatted. 4 highlight layers and 5 shadow layers. But I think the results were worth it. A real pleasure to be involved in this small way with such an awesome project.

More example work coming as soon as its unvailed...assuming imageshack decides not to delete all my stuff again!.

Just like to add my own massive recommendation for this guy.

I went to him just a couple of days ago with a pretty rough idea on a CP I wanted, not only did I get exactly what I asked for, I also got a few different interpretations of my idea too.

Within I think two days, and a good few e-mails making all the petty numerous fussy changes I wanted as well as incorporating some very welcome suggestions, Waveryder had completed a full size 300 dpi image that was true to the original concept but above and beyond what I'd initially envisioned. Beyond that it was $55 which is about 30 quid over here!!

Fantastic work and I couldn't be happier :)

P.S. I don't like to sound like I'm brown nosing, but I really am very impressed and can't wait to put the final stick together!! (My stick and buttons were supposed to be here today and they're not!!  :( )
Highly reccomended

Cant wait to see it printed. Thats the one pleasure of creating artwork I never get  :'( Really enjoyed painting it and the wife strangley wanted to watch all 4 "Indy films" after she saw it. Now if I can just get someone who wants "The Matrix" artwork, I might get to watch those this year as well  ;)

btw - what's with the new banner?  Looks very cool.  Is it part of something bigger?

It was part of a marquee I produced for a "guest" (not a member) on the forum. 20 draft versions and then decided they didn't want it.  I used to sell off the artwork that people didnt pay for on my thread but I dont do that anymore as its all to much like "bussiness" and thats to close to real life for me! I thought I might as well use the artwork for something.

Martijn has just unvailed the artwork on his FANTASTIC cab over at the project anouncment forum. Check his thread here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84649.0;all (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84649.0;all)
It was a great pleasure working with Martijn on this. His cabinet was beautifully made and required some beautiful art to complement it. Hope I did it proud. Martijn wanted a real retro look combined with Streetfighter characters. I produced this work in the remix style of the UDON crews streetfighter HD Work. No easy task from a 72dpi screen grab. But enough talk......

Marquee

Control Panel

More example work coming as soon as its unvailed.

Im away from home at the moment and wont be avaliable to finish or take on new work till 03 Nov. Apologies to the users who have PM'd me or are waiting for finished work, unplanned and cant be helped.

I have a gallery on Deviant for my other artwork, it tends not to be be arcade related, usually it gets taken down for being to risque ...not the kind of stuff that I should link. I dont have the original artwork that has dissapeared from the thread as most of it has been sold and the originals sent to the buyer. Should be some new stuff on this thread as forum members unveil their cabs.

I sent you an email with a request. Let me know if you got it and what you think.

Yep replied to your PM. Have had a bit of trouble with lost emails due to gmails spam filter. Oddly found lots of places to buy viagra though ;)
