Title: Can MAME artwork cause burn in?
Post by: LeedsFan on April 24, 2019, 04:59:53 am
Maybe I'm just being paranoid?  But I'm not monitor expert. So the question is can playing one particular vertical game for a length of time (say 3-4 hours or so) with vertical bezel art permanently displayed down the sides cause any burn in on a relatively modern(ish) vga PC CRT monitor?
NOT an arcade monitor.

I just feel like it's not the thing to do... but it might be fine?

anything being displayed on a CRT has the possibility of buring into the screen given enough time.

But how much time? Would it need quite a few hours? Or just a couple? Or is this too subjective and depends on type/manufacturer of monitor etc?

You need to turn the monitor off and on every 108 minutes

Many hours, dependent on the tube and the brightness of the static image. But collapse a bright picture to a line or dot, and you'll increase the potential for burn-in significantly.

Yeah, many hours. Don't worry about it. Remember arcade monitor have lived most of their lives switched on for 8+ hours a day, every day. Static stuff like score lines and 'insert coin' is what usually gets burnt in over a long time. More modern PC CRTs are probably less prone to burn in too, although I'm not sure why. Just never seen one with burn.
