Title: Project Neon Flynn's: Yet Another COMPLETED Flynn's Arcade!
Post by: StefR on September 24, 2015, 08:35:51 pm
So I have been reading this forum for years knowing that eventually I would finally decide to go ahead and build my own MAME machine.  Well today is the day.  Actually a few days ago but who's counting :)

Obviously, I have been inspired by the great contributors here.  Main inspiration includes:
- ChanceKJ's Flynn's Arcade: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146068.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146068.0.html)
- Project Mame: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,76150.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,76150.0.html)
- Ond Metropolis: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118612.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118612.0.html)

I read ChanceKJ’s thread last year with a lot of interest and really liked the idea of Flynn’s arcade.  I especially focused on the arcade itself (the building) since it is the place where the gaming happens and has references to video games etc.  Anyways, I was toying with my new 3D printer back then and set on to try and make a replica of the Flynn’s neon sign at the front.  I thought this could make for a pretty kickass marquee for an arcade cabinet.   I spend a few weeks designing and building it and was pretty happy with the results (see pics).  Thus I knew I was going to make Yet Another Flynn’s Arcade!

While I absolutely love ChanceKJ’s design, I really wanted to make something much smaller.  I already have a pinball machine and space (read wife tokens) is limited.  So I settled on a 2 player system that would be fairly minimalistic.  I also wanted it to be well setup for Robotron and so sticks needed to be reasonably close to one another.  After searching for a while I found the Project Mame design which is pretty much what I am looking for.  I changed the marque area to be curved in order to match the neon sign and the Arcade building shape.  I also really like Ond’s idea for the front part with LEDs so I added that in.  I changed the base to make it more rigid and used a design similar to ChanceKJ’s Flynn.  Below are some shots of the concept 3D model as it stands now.

More to come...

Oh well, great minds think alike I guess  :)

So happy to see you dont have another member of the fleet for a control panel.  3D print looks neat.

LOL, yeah I guess that's the eternal dilemma.  Not too big or have all the controls possible...  One idea I am toying with is making the CP easily swap-able such that I could support other control configuration without requiring a landing carrier.  That will be for a future project.  CP will be removable for now.

Sold on that many admin buttons? What are they going to be? Esc and pause I assume, and ?

Looking good so far, remember you can always change the title of your thread by modifying the first post.

Yeah, change your title. No one "owns" the name Flynn's Arcade. This is YOUR project, not a simple clone, so the title should reflect it. Looking forward to seeing what you do.

Agreed, I just haven't had any bright ideas on a name yet.  If you guys have any ideas, fire away!

The two buttons on the top left are 1P and 2P.  The top 3 in the middle are for a spinner and 1 button on each side.  Top right pair is admin buttons.  I have not finalized the CP layout yet and sure could use you guys' inputs.  How many admin buttons do you guys use and what are you primarily using them for?

Yeah I'll change the name when I can think of something better...

Could you use P1 button 3 as the button for the spinner?  I can see a case for Esc and Pause buttons, though some might disagree.  You have a coin door in your render, so I'd skip coin up buttons, or just have one since MOST games support coin up for both players of course this may be your intention as you didn't mention them.

Received the coin door!  Also got the base done today.  Its essentially a scaled down copy of what Chance did.  Really liked the idea of the back wheels with levelers in the front.  Still waiting for the wheels to arrive though so I 3D printed a copy in the meantime so I can work.  Also 3D printed a bunch of templates for the router.  Man, that little 3D printer turned to be more useful than I thought it would.

After modeling all kinds of crap to test for fit, it'd be sooo nice to be able to just hit Print and be done with it...

Making progress...got all the panels cut and making my way through routing all the various slots for fans, etc.

What do you guys typically do for the overall cabinet power switch? I vaguely remember a toggle switch on top for some reason but I am not sure.

That artwork is very nice. However, that silhouette of PAC-MAN on the left Tron cycle seems out of place but it is subtle. Did you specifically want that there?

I thought that at first (I'm a no character on the art guy) but I think it works in this concept for a few reasons.  The concept is that the cabinet is like Flynn's arcade (the building).  Inside is where gaming happens.  The stuff on the CP is meant to represent things inside the arcade.  If you look closely, you will see they are actually neon signs you could find in an arcade.  Pac man is one of them.

StefR, what program did you use to model the 3d printed letters?  Did you have to place all the el-wire holders manually?  Very impressive overall.  Can't wait to see it finished.

All done in sketchup and printed with cura.  Each letter is one piece including the elwire brackets.  I designed the elwire brackets so they snap in nicely without breaking.  Took a few iterations.  The 3D files are posted on thingiverse if you want to check out the model.  This approach was inspired from a 1/3 scale some dude designed out of metal.  He has a thread on pinside for those interested in larger replicas.

That was the initial version where I was trying to have the spinner in an area where you can get your hands through and not be bothered by the joysticks.  I built a mockup and didn't like it so I changed it in the latest rev.  The final version only has a spinner in the middle with no buttons.  The two joysticks are now a bit further apart leaving more room to access the spinner.  Top left has 1P / 2P buttons and top right has 2 ctrl buttons.

Cab is coming along nicely although everything seems to take 4 times longer than I had planned.  Oh well.

My CP is angled and will have T molding on.  Today's headache was figuring out how to do an angled T molding slot.  I don't have the angle jig for my router and didnt feel like spending 60$ and waiting a couple days to get it.  Bah, nothing you can't solve with a 3D printer.  Built myself a jig at the exact angle I needed and bolted it on the router.  Worked like a charm.

Received the side art, marquee and CP vinyl printouts today!  Thanks to Lucian045 for the super quick turnaround.  I can't wait to put it on but I am not quite there yet.  Time to pick the T-molding color.  Sucks that there is no suitable orange available.

The wife and kids seem to think the gold and silver ones look best.  I'm not convinced so I think I will wait until everything is on the cab and then take a second look at T molding colors.

Just in case you weren't aware, the gold/silver are actually a type of foil or film laminated onto an otherwise semi-clear length of t-molding, meaning if it takes too many bumps or scrapes, rather than just a gouge, you'd have some "un-gold" or "un-silver" spots. It does look cool, that's for sure, but something worth bearing in mind.

Thanks, I didn't realize that.  I will do some stress test on the bits I have here.  There will be kids playing the thing and it will get some abuse (as it should) so I will have to bear that in mind.

Put on the first coat of black paint today.  While its drying, I started designing the marquee bracket and the bracket that will hold the neon sign.  I knew I was in for some fun when I decided to go with a curved marquee.  Couldn't help it and had to test the fit of the neon sign.  Fits like a glove.

Yes that's exactly the plan.  This was just a quick fit check and didn't have the marquee background installed.  You can see it in the pic of the printed artwork a few posts back.

Very productive day today!  Got the side art, monitor and marquee installed.  I was freaking out about applying/cutting the vinyl but that ended up being pretty easy.  Test fitted a 3D printed curved marquee bracket and the neon sign.  Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.  I'll use my good camera later on.

Ordered the T molding and buttons (all orange).  Decided to not use illuminated buttons.  Seems like everybody is using them these days but I felt like there was enough flashy things in there.  I tried a bunch of different models but the straight orange always seemed better.

Measured the window dimensions about 20 times and will get quotes this week.  From my research, seems that the consensus is for dark tinted glass so I think I will go for that.

That was a long day, I need a drink...

Save some money on the glass and go with dark tinted plexi. Trust me on this, i've done the homework. For the price, clarity, weight, and just all around, its like the only thing i would have done different. :)

I'm loving this build, those Orange buttons are going to look crazy on that CP.

Thanks for the tip.  The local glass shop I dealt with before does both glass and plexi so I will get a quote for both.  Not too concerned about weight as I gave that up when I went with MDF (never again).  Price, well, I stopped counting a while ago, as you probably all have at some point.  My goal is to get the best look and feel.  I never get a good feel when I look at raw acrylic sheets.  Feels cheap and plasticy.  Maybe its different when its tinted and installed in the cab?  There is something real about glass that I can't quite describe.  Although when you say you have done your homework, I totally believe you.

Yeah the orange works great after all.  Credit all goes to gbeef on that.  I was worried because the t-molding orange does not quite match the orange outline in the art.  It didn't look right in CAD but looks fine in reality.

For this cab (which looks awesome), I agree with Chance.

OTOH (and for folks who may find this thread by searching for the choice of glass vs plexi), I'll offer my rationale. For instances where the monitor is near a vertical mount and there is no trackball prone to "Golden Tee swoosh" play, I think plexi is a good choice (just be sure to clean it properly so you don't get scratches). If, however, you have a monitor mounted at 60 degrees or less, or have controls that may end up with hands running off the CP, go with a good tempered glass. All in MPO.

Marquee is gorgeous, as is the artwork. I love bold accents, so orange is a great choice.

Maybe yous guys know where to go for cheap plexi, but I had a 25 1/2 x 26 1/2 price of smoked tempered glass cut at my local glass shop for $26 bucks.

A sheet of even acrylic big enough to span that is more than that and I imagine plexi is even more spendy.

Just saying....

I am now stuck waiting for parts so, in the meantime, I started setting up the software.  I ran tests on a few games today and am reconsidering my choice of a vertical monitor.  I find horizontal games look rather small.  I knew this going in but it felt worse than I expected.  I also found that vertical games end up huge, not necessarily in a good way due to their low resolution.  Luckily, I have a 16:10 24" LCD so I ran some side by side tests.  I think I will go back to horizontal with a 16:10.  My main worry with it is if it dies, it will be hard to replace.  Would be interested to hear what you pros think.

Also, these cabs are for home use. Remember, companies like Nintendo used smoke plexi for their actual machines.

My personal preference -- when I have the choice -- is glass. Nothing looks better. Having said that, plexi is fine and cheaper... right up until it is scratched. Then it is ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. But then again, tempering is expensive and if you've ever set a sheet of tempered glass down wrong, even more expensive.

Properly cared for (as you say, home use ... just clean it properly), and in a configuration that doesn't leave it prone to scratched, plexi is fine. I have two Atari cabs (dating from 1976 and 1979), both with original plexi that still look great. And my Ninty, while not really a poster boy for quality cab construction, still has original smoked plexi and looks fine.

EDIT: I wasn't clear about the plexi on my old cabs -- all of them were in-arcade and then on-route machines and the plexi is still nice.

Just got quotes.  Regular tinted glass 62$, plexi 95$ and graylite 14 glass 108$.  I wouldn't call plexi cheap at this point.  I will try a couple other vendors just in case.

If you are going for quotes on glass, make sure it's tempered. Seriously.  :-\

No doubt!

Does Canada not have places that are full service glass shops that do everything from windows and windshields  to tabletops and skylights?

Or are the prices your talking in Canadian dollars?

The neon sign is already made with elwire and i think adding more will just make it too crowded.  Sometimes less is more in my opinion.  It will be backlit though.  Made some test with my phone flashlight behind it and it looked great so i will add  that.  There will also be led strips between the 2 layer kickplate like Ond's Metropolis.

Canada has a lot of things.  However for some strange reason I chose to go with OneDayGlass.com.  ...maybe their marketing got to me?? I can't for the life of me remember why I didn't go local.

I should have done plexi tho. Meh.

Just found #2074 (dark grey) plexi for 28$ in Toronto (20$ shipping).  Almost too good to be true.  At that price, I will give plexi a shot.  If I don't like it, I can always go back to glass. For those in Canada, found this at plasticworld.ca

Received my LED strips today so finished the Marquee.  I'm pretty happy with that.  Here is how it looks in the dark.

Okay, let me rephrase that. What are the white lights I see behind the letters? What is the purpose?

Each letter is a piece of 3D printed plastic which includes standoff posts to hold the el wire (all white).  A few posts back there are pics of the assembly that might help clarify.  The sign is held by a 3D printed frame (white).  This whole assembly sits in front of a curved marquee (brick texture, see pic) with an LED strip behind it.  I guess the crappy cell phone pic isnt that clear.  Once this is more finished I'll take out my SLR and get some good HDR shots.  I'm just lazy :)

I'm starting to think I should have made the letters and the frame black but I don't even want to think about redoing it at this stage.  Maybe later.

[edit] Looking at it again, I think you might be referring to the clips that hold the elwire.

I think the letters themselves look cool. I guess I just thought that those would be the only thing lit, almost like neon. The white threw me off. Yes, can't wait to see the SLR photos.

They actually do look like neon.  Its just hard to capture with a camera.  It even makes a nice faint buzzing sound just like real neon.  I tried with and without the background led strips and it definitely looks better with it.

Very impressive indeed!    Awesome concept, great execution.   :applaud:  :notworthy:

Any thought to putting solid walls around the letters like it appears the original had, or at least it looks that way in the pic you posted, I think it would help give the letters more definition. Also, it may just be the picture, but the white looks a little bright to me.

There are no walls but there is a white background on each letter which achieves that.  Its just hard to see in the pics because of the poor dynamic range of the camera.  Same for the background light.  It looks pretty good in person but I can't same to take a good picture of it.

I think the brick texture is what's throwing my eye. If it was plain white I think it would look better. Not that it looks bad, mind you. I think it looks awesome, but the blue strips behind the letters kinda make my eye buggy...lol.

I'll reserve more comments when I see the HDR pictures. Loving this build, the artwork is FAN-TAS-TIC as well! Can't wait to see the orange buttons.  :applaud:

Yeah its the kind of thing you have to see in person.  I tried not lighting the background and it didnt quite work.  I can try and play with intensity of the background and make it more subtle.  Do you guys know if its safe to put electrical tape on some of the leds on these strips?  I would think so but they do heat up a bit.  Maybe there is another way to dim them down a bit?

I noticed the t molding and buttons have arrived but im on business travel right now.  Can wait to put this stuff on...

A pulse width modulated (PWM) dimmer will work for your led strips.  If you're only worried about dialing in the level, and not flashing effects, you can pick up a simple PWM LED dimmer off ebay for under $5.

Yeah i was trying to avoid the PWM route until im sure thats what i want.  These things are cheap but they take forever to show up since they come from China.  Ill block some and see if it looks better first.

Agreed, if it were me, I wouldn't light the back section and just have the 3D part lit up.

Still, this is so cool.  It makes the neon sign I wanted to have made for a bartop project look like dog ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

Dude, I have seen your work.  I am sure that whatever you come up with will look amazing.  If there is anything I can help with let me know.

Made some progress this weekend.  Finished the CP (except for the missing T-molding), installed the coin door and the plexi.  I'll have to agree with Chance, the dark tinted plexi (#2074) looks fine to me.  Best 28$ I have spent.  We will see how it stands up to potential scratches but right now, I am very happy with how it looks.

I used 3/16 plexi and I found that the scratch and snap technique did not work well for cutting it.  I had used this for the thinner lexan used on the marquee and CP and it had worked well.  The edge ended up not very nice and so I used my router to clean it up.  For thicker pieces, I would recommend snap cutting a bit longer and then trimming the excess with a router.  Hopefully that will help somebody in the future.

Next is T-molding and wire clean up inside.

I was tempted to do that but I saw that you need a special blade or at least something with high tooth count.  The blade on my table saw is pretty crappy so I went the router way instead.

I've used both a laminate blade, and more recently a blade meant for ripping plywood, & I didn't have issues with either. If you have any scraps left over, you could always experiment.

I can't count how many times I have used the wrong blade for the job because of sheer laziness to change it out. I have usually been pleasantly surprised that my lack of motivation didn't make a real difference.

Good to know.  I didn't want to take a chance since I knew the router would do a nice job.  I'll play with the left overs and see how it comes out.

I think the Marquee section looks great man.  :applaud:
I wouldn't remove the brick texture at all, since it is part of that industrial look of where it comes from. What I would do is edit it a bit so that the highlights are a bit more toned down.  The issue I see with it currently is that the "whites" are being too lit-up, and is being washed-out by the back-lighting. If you toned that down a bit it wouldn't be so pronounced and would allow the Flynn part to stand on it's own.

Thats kind of what i am thinking.  My first crack at it will be to dim the backlight.  I just need to finish all the rewiring before i can get to trying it.

Surely there's a Build-Your-Own-Christmas-Tree forum for this sort of thing?  >:D

Read the last line, EL wire, last I looked EL wire blue looks like tron blue illuminations, EL wire is way more flexible.

Reading is key, but i'm sure the picture just crayoned everybody in didnt it.

Whats funny is the OP innovated a new way to do marquees (which is pretty damn cool), not the standard marquee, but can be deemed Christmas-treeish.

Yep lets not look at other things people, lets keep it BORING.......

The marquee works because it re-imagines the original signage in the perfect place for the cabinet and therefore is a inspired addition that really adds to the theme of the cabinet.

My query was that if you had to thread the lights through the t-molding once installed then that looked like it could be problematic if there were any hard angles in the profile of the cabinet - having recently rewired some of my house I know how difficult threading anything through a small channel can be. Alternatively, if it was installed in the molding first then would it be damaged by the action of 'hammering' it into the groove. If EL wire is immune to these problems then great - I don't have any experience with it so it was a genuine question.

The Christmas tree reference was a joke hence the  >:D evil icon. Illuminated t-molding is not for me but whatever floats your boat

My first thought is to stay away from more lights on this thing and keep the focus on the marquee.  That's what made me go for regular buttons instead of illuminated.  That being said, I have learned multiple times on this build that I don't really know what I want until I try it and see how it looks.  Probably for that reason alone, I will give it a shot eventually.  Until then I will first install the regular orange T-Molding, if it could ever arrive...

Besides, we already had a conversation about this T molding the other day. You must have missed it, my friend.

Yeah, but if you look closely at that T molding, you see a seam down the middle, so looks like two split pieces per side. Close, but no cigar.

Thats how the older versions of EL tape were made for the 1/2" to 3/4", that pic is 5 yrs old.

They have advanced the design since then.

Plus you can control the intensity of the lighting, by dialing down the voltage, so that part would be subtle, not overwhelming.

Anyhow just an idea, just figured it tied the whole FLYNNS - TRON thing together.  The night shot would be really cool with the blue outlines then with Flynns lit up bright in the middle...

Couple that with another innovation in this build  :dunno

Agreed.  I am only considering the el tape option which wouldnt show dots or a seam (i would think).  I added rgb led strips between the layers on the kick plate and i am not sure i like seeing all the dots.  I might replace it with el tape.

I was under the impression that the line on that Tron was due to using two thin pieces of EL Tape between the "T".  That was something I considered at one point which is where my assumption is coming from.  The version that T-molding.com should not have the line down the middle.

To me the focal point of this build is that amazing marquee.  I wouldn't add anything that distracts from it.

Just be careful, the stuff i saw on aliexpress, had the strip down the middle.

Not sure if you knew but aliexpress has alot more to offer on a consumer level in stead of a dealer, its alibaba's little brother.

My bad on the year mixup on this photo, that was this year, i had 2011 in my head for some reason.

Rodney is my homeboy and I have a ton of respect for him, but I don't think this cab needs any MORE light. That marquee is awesome, and besides, Flynn's Arcade had more than just Tron inside.

Totally agree and that is the plan.  But I can't help to try stuff, especially when its cheap.  In the back of my mind, I am thinking of probably using the El tape to replace the LED strips I have on the kickplate.  I doubt I would end up using this as T molding but seems fun to try.

It's not an argument bro, these are our opinions, the OP is gonna do what he wants at the end of day.  Does it neeeed it, probably not, but it doesn't hurt to try new stuff, cause you never know.

Who would of know a 3d printed marquee would be loved around here, but he tried it and it worked out well.  He might slap on the EL's and be like hell no, but then again, it might be damn that looks pretty sharp.

The marquee is a highlight for sure, but hey go all out if your gonna do it.....he has enough sense to pull idea if it looks like total ass.

The centerpiece of this cab should be the marquee. That T molding? Not so much.

No.

Attention should be on the beautiful translite and the glorious joystick.

When I still planned on finishing my Tron restore, I wanted to change to glowing buttons and spinner dial. That's about the only pimping that makes sense on a cab that is already blinged-out.

Got the T-molding on and made a few updates.  I like the orange and I don't think I will change it.  Lowered the intensity of the marquee backlight, seems to help.  Ongoing love hate relationship with Hyperspin but the thing is functional now.

Didn't take long to find people that wanted to play :)  Its weird to see my kids play these old games.

Niiice. Photo makes the t molding look redder than I expected but that could be just my screen.

All it needs now is some illu... Nah. I'm not gonna go there...  ;D

Is it finished? If it is change the post subject to say that so that peeps know.

Yeah, this is looking awesome! The marquee backlight still seems a touch bright, like the value is similar to the FLYYN'S, but it might just be exposure compensation, too. Looks great!

You're right, the t molding keeps looking redder in pictures.  That's what caused my concerns with it in the first place.  Looks bright orange in reality and fits nicely with the art.

Its not quite finished although most of the remaining work is under the hood.  I will post some nicer pics and re-label the thread once its complete.

I didn't like the exposed edge between the top of the CP and the window so I designed a little custom plastic trim to go there.  I 3D printed it in 4 parts and used black vinyl wrap to turn it into a single piece.  Doesn't look too bad.

That orange lighting on the front just makes me think of a Recognizer. Good job!

Interesting, I never thought of it this way.  I kind of liked how it projects on the floor and matches the bottom of the side art (the orange glow).  My only issue right now, is I find it a bit bright and you can see the leds.  I might design some sort of diffuser.  Thats one item on the list of possible tweaks.

Meh, right now I just want to play games for a bit...

This is a great example of an innovative modern cabinet that still retains a classic arcade feel. Personally, I don't consider it a clone of anything, nor do I see it as "yet another" anything as well (and I changed my subject title to reflect that). Nicely done. My favorite cab this year, by far.

Hello, I am in the assembly of my first arcade machine, and I would like to make a replica of your Arcade. Could you share the measurements of the structure and the graphics to be able to print them?

Thank you so much

I’ve been researching building my own cab, and stumbled upon this thread. I love this design, any chance you would part with some plans or sketchup? It looks like the Metropolis Cab is supposed to have plans to download on that thread, but they’ve been removed. Awesome work.
