Title: HD Mame Marquees Project
Post by: stigzler on November 09, 2015, 05:43:41 pm
HD Mame Marquees Project

To cut the waffle... as the title implies. The aim is to get a single set of the 'most HD' Mame Marquees out there. Have set up a dropbox folder for the sync'ed collection. Also made the app below the hopefully simplify the process:

Thanks PL1 - seen that top one before, but couldn't find it for the life of me!

Also, just found the mamelayplus site - a real goldmine - a lot of my 500px ones are on that site as 1000. Happy days with that site - just doubled a lot of the resolutions!

You probably saw it here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,17346.msg1372720.html#msg1372720).   ;D

Added this thread to that list of art sources.

Would love to know the story behind this guy and his marquees:

http://kdo-perso.info/medias/46/marquee/mame/hires/ (http://kdo-perso.info/medias/46/marquee/mame/hires/)

looks like he got up to c and then gave up!

Some great scans thought. I'm interested in where all these huge marquee scans come from. Are they hand-made from smaller originals (e.g. vectorised?) or someone sourced a lot of original marquees?

http://www.coinopart.com/ (http://www.coinopart.com/) has a bunch.

I (and others) have uploaded some over at Mameworld in the Artwork sub-forum, but you'd have to look around as there isn't a consolidated thread.

mameworld.info (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?f=mq&p=a#here) has 185 marquees. A lot of them are Neo-Geo System with the inserts, though.

Thanks for doing this work!

Why don't we do this but to where we all chip in and make a bunch of mame marquees and generic cps that people can use as a base. I could whip up a few.

Yeah, I thought about drawing "generic" but cool arcade art work like all the Mame art out there but use catchy names and themes.  However it would be a project for just one person to do a dozen arcade sets.  Maybe a few of us guys and gals who still vector here on the forums could get together and do a project like you suggest.

This is a good idea. Think im getting close to have amalgamated most of the existing sets. Tgeres a handful of 3000 pix marquees, quite a few at 1366, and a number at 1024. There are some real classics that have quite low rez ones (1942 coming to mind) and itd be good to make  hd versions.

My 2c would be itd be better to try and vectorize the original and spruce it up than having a custom one. However, had a go at this with 1942 and trace paths in ai but results were crappy. Beyond my capabilites.

Maybe two sets, customs and reduxed.?

Then fot the bitmaps, you get into the tricky territory of how large? My initial thought would be to 4k standards?

Anywhoos, if theres folks interested in making either custom or reduxed marquees, then happy to set up and coordinate a dropbox for them. Ill have a look this weekend at getting the final marquee set zipped up so could use as a final set for comparrissons.

The complete Arcade Artwork listing here (http://www.arcadeartwork.org/artwork_ultra_complete_listing.htm) has the answer.

Took me a while too - badly designed, really. To get the full sized image:

The interface for that part of the site used to be much easier to navigate before they "upgraded".    :banghead:

Fortunately, there are only 85 files in "High Quality Marquee Scans" and the Google Drive folders in "Artwork - Ultra High Quality" are much easier to navigate/download.

There are 3170 files in the Google Drive "Artwork - Ultra High Quality (http://arcadeartwork.org/index.php?/category/182)" folders.

Click on the "Click here to open the Google Drive with all of the 'X' artwork" text, not this image.   :dizzy:

Bonus: The listing here (http://www.arcadeartwork.org/artwork_ultra_complete_listing.htm) of the files on the Google Drive shows the height and width of the files.   ;D

I sourced some from various places a couple years ago and then started making my own for games I didn't have yet. They weren't perfect but looked ok on my monitor with my hyperspin setup

Im planning on carrying on the task soon

What's considered high resolution?  I have a slew of marquees that I've cleaned up and sized to 1024 pixels wide, that I use in MAME and for my 3dArcade cabinet models.  Is that a high enough resolution?

@jib : id say zip em up and share them. We can update any that are under 1024. Just a q though, are any of them upscaled? Eg a 350 px upscaled to 1024?

@ boomslang : A share would be appreciated by all im sure...

Upscaled? No way, I'm a graphic artist, I wouldn't even consider such a thing. Heresy!

Can anyone share their Marquee collection with me?  Looks like a few of you were working on a collection.  I can share what I have as well.

Drop Box LINK not working, are you sharing these cleaned up marquees ? Ideally I'd like to add them to my front end as the ones as packs floating around look terrible. PM me please

Yes - dropbox sucks arse - that's why. Bunch of capitalist, monetising pigs.

Funnily enough, I just came back to this the other day. I have to update the software used to update sets, but aiming to have a new set up and running within a few weeks.

Is this project still ongoing?  Is there one place to DL arcade marquees of reasonably good quality that you might display on a dynamic marquee?

On the back burner. Is part of my bigger project, now - a new frontend specifically designed to accommodate multi-monitor setups, amongst other things:

http://omnigamez.com/

Once up and running, I'll be moving on to produce some asset collections for it, and HD Mame marquees will be one of my priorities. I've added this as a dev aim here:

http://omnigamez.com/issues/view.php?id=47

Oh, and if you have any suggestions for features for a new front end - please feel free to join up and post them on the forum.

What Programming language are you using to build your frontend?  I checked your website but might have overlooked it.

Awesome.  I'm definitely going to check it out.  So... if I had to describe what my "perfect front end" would be in terms of features, etc. here's what I'm looking for:

1.  Simplicity.  Can't over state this.  All of the bells and whistles I see with things like HyperSpin or Big Box, etc. are cool I guess but very distracting to me.  None of the videos or animations help with navigation and getting into playing a game.  It's nice to see the year the game came out and other information but honestly I never pay attention to it.   If you are familiar with the old GameLauncher front end I thought that was just about the perfect layout (I attaced a pic).  Centered game list with a faded screen shot behind the list that changes when you navigate through the list.

2.  ONE game list (but I understand that people may want more).  Maybe allow for categories (shmups, fighting, etc.).  What I don't like is being able to back out to a "system" menu if you are only running one "system" (MAME).

3.  Option for bare bones Arcade only.  Set the front end to boot on start-up and bring you right to the gamelist.  No other menus to worry about (no options available without a keyboard).  If there is some combination of buttons that will screw something up, a guest will figure it out.

4.  Option for second monitor to be used to display marquee art.  This is becoming popular and will only increase over time as weird shaped monitors become cheaper or people design efficient ways to hide parts of a regular monitor in the cabinet displaying only enough to show the marquee.  I think it is a worthwhile feature to include.

Well - it's gonna be a wysiwyg build your own front end job, so you will be able to design what you want.

As for multi-display support - that's the genesis of where all this started!

If you're wanting your ideas to be taken on board, just post over in the project forum. Things posted on various forums all over the internet will get lost to me.
