Must be nice to live where you can play arcade games outside.  ;D

I'm going to have to try that desert tank game.

I never could find a method for raising and lowering the aim that worked as well as I wanted.  :-\
The best I came up with was mapped to the paddles, but you really need analog for it to work right.
I remember using one of the pedals and getting tired of trying to keep it in the same position.

Maybe if you could mount a cheap flight stick near your shifter?   I was thinking about the pedal too, but ya, foot cramps after awhile.  I think a "real" tank "steering wheel" looks more like a flight yoke.  Maybe I can get something going once my spy hunter control panel gets here this week...  :)

THANKS!

California  :)

The shifter works but, its not great. I can get pretty far into the game using the shifter. I originally tried the pedal but, it was too hectic.

Desert tank is an odd duck in terms of controls.  The original game's primary controls are very similar to a star wars yoke.  So that's the sort of controls you need to control the turret easily.

Found a picture of the control panel (wasn't hard).  The hand grips look just like what Spy Hunter used.  Does the whole thing move in and out like a flight yoke?  or does it rotate forward and back?  Trying to figure out how the turrent control works.    Looks like a Chase HQ shifter (without the button).

I can't say for sure, I only played it once years ago in passing.

From what I remember the gearshift changes gears between forwards and reverse (duh), you've got pedal for acceleration (which is really odd for a tank) the yoke rotates left and right to steer and the whole thing moves forwards/back to adjust the turret height.  That bit isn't spring loaded though, so you set the height and can leave it there.   That's the issue you guys are going to run into.  Probably the easiest fix is to use a paddle controller.

Makes sense.  Its the only place I can see on the control panel that would "work" for that feature too.

I think I will change it to the paddle shifter. I hate that I have to let go of the steering wheel (and missile button) to move the turret. Thanks for the idea.

Well that's probably not going to work.  I didn't mean a paddle shifter (which is digital and probably not precise enough) I meant a paddle controller... you know, like pong?

That setup looks great, but I must complain about standing and playing racing games. I've had 3 upright driving cabinets. 1 was monster truck game I never liked at all. One was outrun which I enjoyed quite a bit. But the one I really loved was Racin' Fury. The driving was fantastic, but I really grew tired of standing on one foot while feathering the pedals. When you are playing an upright racing game, I found it difficult to really work on my scores because after about 5 games, I get really sore on that left foot and the muscles toward the front of the right calf. Right now I'm considering a dual sitdown racer (Sega Outrunners) with model 2 emulators in both networked.

I'm not standing. I have a high stool. I actually built my CP around the stools so I can sit comfortably when racing or button smashing.
