Hi all, I'm looking for the right frontend ... too many choices as usual.
It will go into a a couple of GM-powered Mamecabs, one vertical one horizontal, with joystick + buttons layouts.
So, it should:
- be light on resources
- look good on low 15khz CRT resolutions, both horizontal and vertical
- support different gamelists (I'm liking Lightspeed Mamelister to generate them so far), each with its own mame.ini to reconfigure the controls for each
- be simple, almost barebones, (no hyperspin-like bling), quick to navigate with just joy + buttons
Any tips? TIA

Not really groovymame related.
My recommendations are attractmode, retrofe, and big blue front end.
Check out the all killer no filler lists. I also converted it to tag list for attractmode.

GameEx can be as busy (HS Style) or as simple as you want..

My recommendations are attractmode...
This. Very light, and comparatively easy to work with :)

I use Maximus Arcade in my cab - it's too bad development stopped... it's really old-school though no fancy stuff

mala with custom 15k low res layout. 320x240
nothing fancy just m4v video in selection

layout has evolved a bit since (i never did another video)

Hello,
Where can I find these lists? Looks like it's just what I need :D
Thanks in advance

EmulationStation with Gbz35 theme.

I've started playing around with Attract-Mode. Is there a simple, clean, modern theme that has large-ish text that is readable on a low-res 15KHz arcade monitor. I'm looking for something tasteful (some might say sterile) and functional.
Also, does anyone know what the "console version" is?

I use the Nevato theme on Attract Mode, it's very nice. I do have an LCD monitor at 1600x1200 but it uses marquees to show each game so should work nicely on lower resolution displays.

AdvMenuPLUS simple, fast, only complain it flashes the desktop on the enter and exit of the game.

I created two layouts for attractmode: mvscomplete and flavors. Both were designed to work well in my Neo Geo k7000 and well as my high res iMac I use for development. See my sig.
2.3 made the app split into two different derivatives. One shows the console. Useful for troubleshooting and list management. Other does not show console window, and doesn’t include console access either. It’s kind of stupid. Download them both and drop in same folder.

After having tried many frontends, attract-mode is the best for me, at least in my win7 cabinet. I ended up hating those spectacular hyperspin style things, because they bring you lofts on problems relating to video interference and performance and, at the end they forget the essential thing: gaming. Although i use A. Mode in a lighweight and sober config you can do whatever with it very easily.

I agree 100% with you.
