Title: "BENDERAMA" folding portable bartop (quick video of unfolding 6-28-10)
Post by: Bender on September 04, 2008, 03:31:18 pm
Ok, here are some pics and a video of the design so far
I wanted this to be ultra portable and yet still very playable
I like the idea of protecting the screen and controls while in transit
I'd like the whole thing to run off a laptop so I'll be able to use it for a couple hours without having to plug it in
I'm thinking of bringing this to poker night so all us losers have something to do till someone takes the pot ;)

I'll have in there some usb powered speakers
a couple of usb powered lights for the marquee
A moded U360 with top fire and rotary function
7 button neo geo thumb layout for the buttons
Spinner (up/down maybe)
3" U-Track ball
Laptop (haven't decided on a model yet. any suggestions?)
it will be roughly 21" tall 10" deep(folded) 15" wide

anyway I'm pretty happy with the design
so I'm going to start cutting the wood soon
Any suggestions or ideas are very welcome
Let me know what you think,

Bender

oh yeah I'm looking for some name suggestions too

I was thinking of a design similar to this except it would be a plug in model and not run off of a battery and it would be a cocktail tabletop. I'm interested in seeing what you come up with! Also...where are the pics?

The only think I would be worried about is how well you can see the screen.. that marquee sticks out alot.. over all it is very cool.. Can't wait to see the progress.

If I were you, I'd probably theme it both in color and artwork with a particular game. Make it a donkey kong with light blue sides, white t-mold, and black inside or Pacman with yellow and orange.

Looks pretty cool so far! First thing that popped into my head when looking at it was weight. I got one that weighs about 60lbs and I still move it around with the joystick during an "intense" moment if you get my meaning.

Maybe you'll have to use some of those rubber feet so it sticks to the table top? I've also thought of using those rubberized sheets that go between a hard wooden chair and the seat cushion.  :dunno

As for a laptop? I'd go for as new as I could afford I guess..

Very good idea. I'm sure you've got these dimensions covered already but those joysticks look like they'll have to be pretty short to avoid the screen.

I like the idea of laptop power & screen too (I've used that in my "Asteroid" project) so that you can run it on batteries/completely cordless. The laptop typically has enough built in sound too so you don't need speakers and can keep it very light.

I was going to make a similar project using nothing but one of those aluminum suitcases (often used as comp. tech. toolboxes).

My word of advice is to consider the ribbon cable of the LCD. These are just about impossible to extend, which means I had to basically swivel the LCD 180' (which means the laptop is mounted on the back of the screen).  I'd advise you to pick your laptop and confirm its dimensions before you commit to the build.

Btw on the subject of names... you're packing up a portable mame cabinet right... how could you go past:
PACK-MAN
PACK-MAME
PAC-MAME
PAC'N'GO MAN

etc

Cheesy but oh-so-appropriate.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! man I will be watching as well. I would use a tablet for the laptop too may be a bit pricey but it can be folded back on it's self and from the back you can access it. unless you can extend the cables as mentioned in previous post. I see how you plan on having the joystick clear the screen too  with the length of the CPO and the slant. very inventive. I really can not wait

*edit*
crap I forgot to mention. with all that stuff running off of batteries I would look into getting an additional battery pack or two and wire them in parallel so you have the staying power with out extra volts. May still have to use some sort of resistor but I was pretty sure with DC if you don't need the amps it will just lay dormant until needed but I would definetly check into it. (or maybe see what can be done to siphon power from the power pack to charge anotehr battery to light up LED marquee lighting and such.)

facesmith,

I like the extra battery Idea
anyone out there know how to wire that up?
I can wire a mini pac but I'm not an electrician and I have know idea how that would be done

On some laptops you can remove the CD drive and put in a second battery.

I was going to do the same idea but for the pinball bartop (if I ever get any good weather) with the 14" wide screen I won on ebay.

My proposed thin cab will have an actuator (I figured it out) that would in fact (by coincidence)  lower and raise your CP per your animation.  It adds money to the project, but it would look cool.  Also it won't slam down (knocks are bad for LCDs) if the lock snapped or came faulty.

Your bartop could be thinner though.  If you are using a laptop LCD, your CP could lose a few inches in thickness, unless you are using a proper LCD display.  It currently looks boxey.  I suggest a James Bond theme, like a briefcase.

I would definately like to see a finished project, and to see how your CP works in real life.

Thanks for sharing.

You can wire the batteries in parallel, as long as they are rated at the same voltage.
But charging them may be a different situation. Your charger would have to be able to handle the extra current it would take to charge two batteries, or you could charge them one at a time.

If you put a switch in line to select which battery to use you wouldn't have that problem for using the batteries OR for charging... the down side however would be that you'd have to shut down to switch batteries (ie no 'on the fly' changes).

I would say you need a multi tester to both test voltage output (cause there are sometimes differing tabs for charge input and power outputs controlled by diodes) but also for directional continuity (polarity) and yes parallel is the way to go as the unit will not drain more current than it needs but the voltage is kind of like pressure in a water pipes (to much and they explode!) the amps are more like having a bigger tank so as long as you dont go crazy and hook up enough batteries to weld with you will be fine.

the charging issue should not be a problem either as even small amounts of current under greater pressure than the batteries output will charge them it will just take longer to fill them up. any one here know what a trickle charger is? tiny amount of amperage but under enough pressure to charge up any size of car batterybecause the current is so small there is no chance of damaging the battery but it takes FORRRR EEEEVVAAR to charge a car battery with one.

I pretty much have all the parts now (5/8 T-molding came today) except the computer
I ordered a Dell XPS 1530 laptop, but it won't get here till the end of the month :-[
It just fits into the design, 14" wide exately the width of the inside space of the cab, I was getting a little worried, most 15.4" laptops are wider than 14" and I have the rough of the cab built already, fheww! (probably should have gotten the computer first, but I couldn't wait to start building this thing)
I upgraded to a Hi capasity battery and an LED LCD screen so I'm hoping to avoid adding another battery (thanks for all the input everyone I still might have to do that, we'll see)
something else I ordered that will help with that is a battery powered usb hub which gives me the confidence I can put in some LED's to add some Blinky Bling to the project
the link for the battery powerd usb hub is here (http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=6996451&oext=1038A&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=6996451)

I tried a bunch of different cabinet hinges but none of them worked, a piano hinge would work but you'd see it, so after much searching I found these "invisible" hinges at woodcraft and they'll work great!

here we are the prototype coming together

here it is all folded up

a couple things I found along the way, I really have to make it a little wider so there is a little more room for your hand to the left of the joystick.
I think I'm going to make it an inch wider and slide the joystick over an additional 1/2"to the right
I'm using mostly 1/2" MDO for the construction because I want it to be as light as possible and I'm going to use black laminate to cover the whole thing and finish it off with 5/8" black T-molding ( 1/2"+ laminate on each side = 5/8")

I'm still waiting on the computer, I think DHL has lost it!
Dell sent it out on the 19th and I've been traking the shipment since then and it hasen't been updated in a week so I called DHL and they don't know where it is :dunno
so If Dell has to make me a new one this could really set me back another month
I guess it's ok I still have to go from prototype to finish and configuring Mala and load all the games, emu's, software, videos, snaps, marquees, custom front end and whatnot which will take some time

Looking real good there Bender.  I hate to bring this to your attention but this is the best time to check the fit of the two pieces with the T-Molding in place.  It will affect the fit because it adds height to the side panels.  And what about the joystick and trackball.  Are they going to bang into the monitor? Just checked your sketch-up drawings.  I had forgotten that you had the monitor slanted back.  I would still check the fit with the T-Molding.

Kaytrim,

you have a great eye. That is one of the issues I have to address from prototype to finish. I factored in an 1/8" and there needs to be at least 1/4"  where the two pieces of T-molding will meet when folded

Bender, this project looks great. What a great idea and so far, very well executed!

Although you haven't mentioned it (other than saying "up/down" spinner in the first post), it looks like you are using the Apache Blackhawk push/pull spinner. Great choice - the push/pull will add functionality to your panel.

One of the things I like best about this project is how you are dealing with what is probably the most restrictive amount of space of any arcade "cab" built by people on these boards, but you still managed to fit in basically everything but a flight stick! :)

Good work, keep it up.

Eric.

Post by: Bender on September 29, 2008, 12:52:28 pm
Thanks Eric,

I actually have both an Apache and a GGG up/down spinner
overall I like the feel of the Apache better, but it's a matter of space. the GGG spinner is a really nice too, but much smaller so it will fit very easily, I have to see how hard the apache will be to squeeze in there
hey I got the trackball in, so we'll see

Yeah but don't try to cut the Apache chassis on your table saw! :)

Looking at your design sketch, it seems like you would just need to gouge out a little bit of the bottom tray of the CP to accommodate the lower edge of the spinner housing.

No, I don't think I'll be cutting into the Apache

Hey Bender, fantastic job so far  I got to ask ya. When you were cutting that trackball chassis, did you know how much to take off or did you just cut a little at a time until it fit? That had to be a bit un-nerving to say the least :P

I knew how much I could take without hurting anything. I started by taking off a little less than that, then took a little more off with two more passes I think, till I was where I wanted to be
It was a bit nerve-racking but after I made the jig for it to fit into I felt pretty confertable I could do it

That's without the T-molding so I still have a little adjustment to make
and I have to figure out the latching mechanism for up and down

So I've had a few set backs with this project.... :(

I fried the inverter board from the laptop monitor while decaseing it
I got the freakin' fancy LED backlit screen option from dell and they haven't been able to get me a replacement for over 2 months now and I'm starting to lose my patience   :bat

I failed to factor in the width for where the AC adaptor and USB cords plug in :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I haven't had a bit of time until recently :-\

the good news is I'm back at it  ;D
I got the T-Molding space worked out (so there's room for it when it folds up)
I've solved the latch problem with magnets and metal bars that will go under the laminate I tested it out on the prototype and it works great, you have to feel it to really get it but it's awesome, instantaneous, and invisible
I've also started the Final version (I hope) and have almost all the major pieces cut (I'll post some pics in the next couple of days)

it is now 2" wider which actually makes the CP more comfortable, and 1" taller which gives the the whole thing and especially the marquee better proportions

I'm thinking of renameing the project either:

BENDERAMA or
BENDERCADE

what do you all like better?

I'm just starting to play with the artwork
here is an idea for the Marquee
obviously the new name will replace FUTURAMA on the marquee but still in the same style
I'm also thinking about putting a joystick in one of this "hands"

Benderama gets my vote. Maybe you could have a joystick in one hand and a screwdriver in the other?

This is an interesting project. Great work so far! I'd love to see some plans come out of this if possible.

I definitely like Benderama over the other.

I am loving this thing.. it is so unique and awesome!  I especially love the Futurama-aspect of anything.

As for the name... Benderama sounds better to me than Bendercade.  Are you going to put any kind of sideart or a CPO on it?  I would love to see some Futurama art on something.

It's now officially "BENDERAMA"

and yes there will be CP, side, and actually bottom art although all very similarly bender themed

Theres a'plenty Futurama font out there, for example:
http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/fonts/index.shtml

...also shows the alien symbols.  Please tell me youre going to use those for "start" and "credit" or something.  Or maybe put some alien catchphrase thing on the bottom art.

Time to put the metal to the pedal to the other metal!

As long as the art is made available I have no qualms.... >:D

This is really gonna be kickass! I showed it to my bro and he said "that is exactly what I need!". He wants a cab but just doesn't want it permanently out!!!

You should maybe borrow some of the art from Joystick Jerk:

I'd ask 1st just because I am a sucker for manners but he said he doesn't mind! And it looks AWESOME!

Thanks, I already got those fonts and I'm actually hand making (actually my sister who is an Illustrator wiz did most of the work) a vector version of the "Benderama Logo" cause none of those fonts are quite right for the 3D Futurama look
love the idea of translating the start and coin buttons, I was also thinking of having a tiny bender silhouette to replace the player one symbol

PROGRESS

A little good news I finally got the computer back ...  but they sent the wrong power cord back with it I'm going to lose my mind

I got the computer decased again and but back to together the way I needed it to fit in the cab
I rewired the power button, oh my god that was the hardest thing I've ever had to solder, the contacts are so small and so close to other stuff It took me over two hours to solder two contact points, but it now works! Woo Hoo!

I've been really slack about pics so I promise some today

The working laptop screen decased and then recased so the cord would reach then slid down over where the keyboard was. it is offset about an inch so that the power adapter cable and the USB cables will fit in the cab and the monitor will still be centered.
I used heavy duty Velcro to attach the back of the monitor case to the base of the laptop just in case I need to get back in there
I covered the inverter board with tape, I'm so scared of that thing is going to get fried again
Please note the button on the end of the purple wires, as that is now the new power button. It is either my favorite or most despised button cause is was so frikkin hard to hack. I can't decide

actually it WAS the most despised while I was doing it, but now that a day has passed and I use it to turn on the machine it gives me the greatest joy, amazing what a little time will do

Thanks for the kind words everyone

It really helps my motivation!

there have been a few times when a piece isn't quite right and I think about just saying good enough , but I know the level of work on this forum, so I do it right and redo whatever it is.  It has made a huge difference in the quality of the outcome, and in the end I feel much better about the project
Plus I know I can't let you all down ;)

Bender

EDIT I think I just jinxed myself with that comment. I just realised that I have to redo the entire marquee section and two of the back panels so that the pop up handle will work, the upside is that the speakers will be angled slightly forward instead of straight down and be out of the way of the marquee light
oh well :(

one of the magnets for the top closure and it's hole. drilled with a 1" fostner bit then used a corner chisel for well... the corners

there are the pair that will hold the thing when its shut (just dry fit, I have since epoxyed them in and then sanded every thing flat then laminated over them see next pics

some of the smaller pieces ready to laminate

laminated and trimmed

ok this was a bear. Both sides, bottom shelf and bottom marquee shelf have a channel routed out 5/8" wide by 3/16" deep to slide the 1/8" smoked Plexi and the 1/2" bezel in and with a very slight adjustment, amazingly everything fit nice and snug

there is the bezel I'm really happy with the way it came out. Almost seems a shame to cover it with smoked Plexi. This and the marquee retainers for obvious reasons are the only things that will be painted, everything else will be laminated

close up of bezel. It's 1/2" MDF routed out on the back about a 1/4" so the laptop monitor sits in there flush against the round over from the front.
This has like 3 coats of greay primer and two coats of semi-flat black sanded between each of corse (done in my undies with a hair net on like Blanka (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88388.msg927881#msg927881) suggested ;))

DUDE! I was thinking "how the hell did he bend the laminate over the curved edge so well!" That does not look like paint AT ALL! :applaud:

I have a can of like every black spray paint possible from a different project, so I just tested them all to find the one that matched the finish of the laminate I ended up with Krylon Semi-Flat matches almost identically

funny you should mention bending laminate.
I'm a Bender that's what I do, this is the Benderama so there has to be some bending somewhere

There are two places I have to laminate around curves, the front of the CP, and the back of the top
so I've been practicing on some scrap laminate, or I should say its scrap now (I'm using the thinner vertical grade laminate)
I'm using a heat gun leather gloves and a LOT of patience. I've found that if you can pre-form the laminate before gluing it it works much better cause the heat you need to bend it negates the glue and also if you mess up the rest of the sheet is glued down to your piece and very hard to get off
The Top back has a sharp 1/2" radius that is really tough, but I think I got it last night
I'm going to do the CP today that should be a bit easier as it has a 1 1/2" radius
cross you fingers
it took four tries to get the top right

(btw, I don't know if its just me but I can only see three pics from your last post)

Really? that's strange
let me know if that is still the case and I'll reload them, there should be 8, they come up fine here

I don't blame you for re-doing parts until you are 100% happy with them. It would only niggle you at the end if you looked back at it and wished you had spent the extra time.

That's exactly what I was worried about
that and you razzing me at the end! ;)

Bender,

I have also done my share of laminate bending, here are a few tricks that I have learned.

Use a nice clean, flat, sturdy work table, lay the laminate on the table and use your weight to roll the piece to the laminate.

Spray the glue on if you can. Rollers and brushes make it tough to get a level film of glue.

Vertical grade laminate shows everything under it. Make sure the surface is perfect and be careful not to contaminate the glue while the lid is open. One little shaving in the glue can be seen in the final product.

Be very careful with the heat gun.

Trust the glue manufacturers instructions.

Pure Xylene rocks when it comes to cleaning off glue.

I lkie hte semll of gule

thanks so much for the info mountain
words from the master will be taken to heart  :notworthy:

unfortunately I don't have access to a sprayer
but I've had good luck with a roller specially made for applying the glue to laminate, I put it on a little thick for the vertical stuff to cover any imperfections
tough I try to make sure every thing is smooth and clean
everything has turned out great so far! (knock on wood)

I would have never thought of doing it upside down like that.
what a great solution, even pressure across the piece as you bend it
I tried it out today and it worked perfectly. Thanks again Mountain.

Funny that you should ask!
here is little update on the CP, and the top marquee panel (the pieces that had to be bent) and some other odds and ends

I decided to add a player2 button so I had to fit 3 holes where I had already drilled 2...   Bondo to the rescue again!

a couple of my failed atenpts at bending the laminate for the top. 1/2" radius is too tight so I tried with 3/4" and got it to work
the 1" radius for the CP seemed easy after that

the top part

this is actually after it was all glued down but you can see where I marked it all out before I glued it so that the bent laminate would line up right with the wood
also to get the bend to stay put I added the 2" right angle part(on the top with the grove cut in it)

here is the same piece with the laminate trimmed and slit, below which will be removed

I'm getting there

I finally "upgraded" the laptop to XP from vista (god that took a while) but I think I got it running pretty stable now

but I'm still working on:

the software side of things, FE and EMU configuration and of course some LED goodness thanks to help from Arzoo
and the actual wiring of the controls
and the artwork too is coming along
so I hope to have some new pics soon

I just acquired an ISO of TinyVista.  I havent tried it yet, but it has some really good reviews.  I was going to use it for an HTPC, but the PC hasnt shown up yet.  It looks like it still has the Aero and Ultimate stuff and all that, and also all the generic networking stuff.  It is missing a bunch of the "enhancements" like the desktop sidebar and such.

I cant vouch for it yet, just letting y'all know.  Im using TinyXP r09 on my cocktail now and looove it.

I wont tell you where to find it, but Im sure youre aware of the usual suspects. ;)

Keep up the work, Im really liking this thing!

Hey bender, can you update your links. I don't see pictures anymore on your posts.

Do you happen to have the dimensions of this stuff? I'd like to build something simillar for my niece for her birthday and having your specs would help allot!

thanks in advance!

Thanks for pointing out the issue with the pics. should be all set now.

Want the prototype? You can have it I'd hate to throw it out.
I can get you the sketch up file too if you want. I did modify it a bit after that but I can let you know the changes I made,

should have some updates on this soon ;)

Yes to both. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out your exact dimensions. I would be changing a few things:

no laptop, put motherboard in marquee area
no marque light use usb
lcd panel
etc

Overall nothing earth shattering, I wanted to know how you mounted the handles and pictures for it. I'd love to see the inner workings.

I'm native to florida. Lord only knows how much the shipping would be :D

you can email them to me at: bigdady at gmail dot com

Much appreciated! Reall

Any update on your project? I want to see more!

And I know it's a bit late for that, but wouldn't it make more sense to put the trackball in the middle? When playing with the joystick and buttons it wouldn't really be in the way and make for a wider control area (i.e. your arms aren't confined to the left+middle, they're positioned at the left and right, if that makes any sense).

Post by: Bender on June 07, 2009, 06:50:15 pm
alright, alright, I'm busted

I've made a lot of progress on this and that is the problem, it became fully playable 2 months ago and I got sucked in, never heard of that happening on this forum before ;) so I've been super lazy about posting

I have a couple of little things to finish up, mostly the LED's on the trackball, spinner, and a couple buttons and and a little work on the front end, then I'll post the finished (at least for a while) product

I've been using it for a while and I have to say I'm really happy with the placement. I'm right handed so the trackball on the right side with nothing behind it works fantastic for me, it could be a little awkward for a lefty but on such a tight panel you can't have everything

hey buddy,

I found out about those buttons from dmworking247's alien bartop project (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84251.0), he gave me the link (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SP0656&CATID=&keywords=pushbutton&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) to a company in australia, they got here pretty quick though
I orderd a bunch cause the shipping is like $10
I really like them, I used them fro the admin type buttons on my xbox 360 sticks too, their much better than the Radio Shack ones

Benders Big Scroe
Beast With a Thousand Backs
Wild Green Yonder

Here are the prototype and the Final versions next to each other for scale I think the Larger final is much better proportioned all around plus the added benefit that the computer will now fit inside... that's a good thing!

It's freakin' awesome!
If you made the top sides overlap the bottom sides you'd get rid of the triangular hole at the bottom when it's folded up... Like you have it in the first renderings.... But then the sides wouldn't line up when closed, I guess. Any plans to fill the trangle?

If you go the laptop root, make sure you think the power on button through fully as it requires some delicate soldering to extend the button out.

For admin buttons, I see "pause", "enter", and "exit".  I also see a player one start and a player two start (I think).  What do you do for coins?

I'm trying to figure this out for my machine, and your designs are so freakin' good that I figure you put some thought into this. :)

I'm also ripping off the small buttons that you ripped off from someone else because they are far far too cool.  I found a place in the U.S. that I can order them from, so I have some on the way:

Red:  http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/PB-138/SPST-N.O.-PUSHBUTTON-RED/-/1.html

Black: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/PB-139/SPST-N.O.-PUSHBUTTON-BLACK/-/1.html

These buttons make me not feel bad for having admin buttons. :)

also I have a bunch of other function mapped through using a shift key

here is the CP layout

Very nice touch to have the alien text above the admin buttons.

Are you happy with that configuration for the main buttons? Mainly the position and arc of the lower four buttons? They seem a bit low to me, in reference to the joystick.

Wow, bender, I love that CP art! Simple, and clean. With alien text to boot  :applaud:

Ray, I didn't know anyone sold top fire U360's so I made it myself and eventually I'm going to add a optical rotary to it too
do you have a link to what you sell?
EDIT: found a project thread here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=20914)

Yvan, I've been lovin' the button config, maybe a bit too much, playing has slowed down the project

Drventure, thanks!

You have it right plus I have a coin button between the 1 and 2 player buttons (for games that have a separate coin for player 2, I just map that to the single coin button)
also I have a bunch of other function mapped through using a shift key

glad to see you got thoes button here in the states, damn and there cheaper too, I should have looked harder :banghead:

How deep are those threads on them buttons? I may have to get me some.... :D

I like it!  Simple but eye catching.  I'm glad you decided on the English-impaired buttons.

Thanks for the kind words everybody!
I'll have more in a couple weeks

Bender - can you provide a link to where ever you got that pause button?  It looks way nicer than the small ones I use from Radio Shack.

I orderd a bunch cause the shipping is like $10
I really like them, I used them fro the admin type buttons on my xbox 360 sticks too, their much better than the Radio Shack ones
they come in red (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SP0657&CATID=&keywords=pushbutton&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) too (used that for the power button on the back)

I've got to get some of those. They look great.

Love the artwork bender - very slick.

What's the favourite game(s) of the youngsters playing the cab?

IG-88, the threads aren't too deep you need to drill some space out on the back like this (I ripped the image from Retrofuture's thread it's not for those buttons but it's the same basic principle)

System01, thanks!

Retrofuture, thanks, they're actually playing Dragon's Lair in the Photo, but they hated it, the death sequences with all the skulls and bones really scared them (I wouldn't have thought that) but they liked marble madness, Mario bros, pacman, Donkey Kong It was a little tough the older one was a little possessive about playing so the younger one didn't get to play to much, it was getting past their bedtime

I'm really hoping that my daughters like Donkey Kong. It's one of the reasons I'm building the cab. They're more into Hanna Montanna and The Tweenies though at the moment... Ms PacMan I can see them liking - she's got a bow in her 'hair', I'll see how they get on with Dragon's Lair later in life.

For all those UK based people out there, those admin buttons are available from both CPC and RS - both snap-in and screw-in models. All are available in multi colours, although they cost £5-6 each  :'(.

Here's a pretty pic:

If you have a look at http://www.rswww.com or http://cpc.farnell.com/ and do a search for apem (the manufacturer) they produce a decent pushbutton selection. I've just ordered some small, as I see them, Atari cone clones in chrome for admin butons.

Woah!  I got some of the black version of those buttons. . wish I had seen the colored ones! :)

If you had 3/4" MDF (and 3/4" plywood for prototyping) and you want to mount some of these small buttons in a spot where there is zero clearance beneath the plywood, how would you do it?  There is space nearby if the wires were routed across the board a couple inches.

Does anything use up/down besides Discs of Tron?  Trying to decide what kind of spinner to get when I get one. :)

hey Gary,

there used to be a website that listed games by control type, but it's down so I can't give you an exact count, but I think there are 3 up/down games and several that or either jut up or just down, the main reason fro me is DOT

Yeah, I used those hinges for my build. Never using them before, it was tricky trying to figure out exactly where they went. But after a couple of test installs, i kind of figured it out. They're pretty sturdy for their size. Oh, & I just saw your complete build video, friggin awesome!
