ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! Games played so far: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html)
----------------------
Game Name : Astro Blaster
ROM Name = astrob
----------------------
Settings: Default (info pending)
Controls:
2 rotational buttons - left and right (2 or 4- way joystick works well), 2 buttons - Fire & "Warp" (slow motion)

You control a ship at bottom of screen that shoots through waves of aliens, maneuvers through an asteroid belt and then docks with mother ship. Firing shots too fast causes the laser to overheat and become unoperational until it cools down. The warp button causes aliens and alien fire to slow down for timed duration. Fuel counts down while playing and if it runs out the game is over.
There are 25 secret bonuses. Some are: destroying entire alien wave before it cycles, having all of your shots hit aliens in a wave no misses and docking with mother ship without moving your ship dead center is 1000 bonus, on the edge paint-scraper is 1500 bonus.

Happy Gaming!

Cool game.
6,950 on my 2nd game. Achieved 2 secret bonuses.
Megamania was highly influenced by this.
Voices sound great.
I like buttons for movement.
Still, not super hella fun. At least not yet...

One of my favorite classic shooters... I was a fan of the Activision 2600 game this evidently took it's inspiration from (or vice-versa?).
A glaring example of how far along the Japanese were as far as digital voices in 1980-1981 versus our "Gorf/Wizard of Wor" voices.
-
@jasonbar: Astro Blaster had initially interesting elements. Game play is rather monolithic, even for '81, which I did not care for. (Crazy Climber, 1980, stands out as futuristic by 1983 standards.) I average between five and seven thousand on the odd occasion I pull it up, like today.
@FrizzleFried: Space Fury, also of 1981, is another example of good voice synthesis.

Another favorite of mine... but damn so hard to find. One day.

QUESTIONS:
Can I submit multiple times or do I get a limited number of submissions (until deadline which I see is June 30th this time around)?
Here is my first game...

Submit as much or as often as you want. Only the highest score counts. (Obviously) Good luck, and nice score! : )

I'm about to head out of town for work, so if nothing changes on this board before Sunday night, I would like to let the next person take it, as I would be unavailable for a few days.

it's customary to provide some tips and tricks too! That's my favorite part of these threads.
I loved Astro Blaster, but it just seemed that no matter how hard I tried, the goal was to push points in the early sectors because you weren't going to get much past sector 3 due to running out of fuel. The game had lots of little tricks for bonuses too, but I never was good at figuring them all out.
-
If you complete the asteroid field without missing any fireballs you get 2000 points (very hard to do... even with WARP)
During the screens where enemies fly from one side of the screen to the other, if you hit WARP and then shoot all the enemies before they hit the other side of the screen you get a 700 bonus.
During the docking with mothership screen... just prior to getting to the screen (right after the asteroid field)... set you ship right on top of the T for SECTOR... do not touch the controls... you will get a bonus of likely 900... if your a little to the left or right you'll get 700 or 500... if you are WAY right and just barely miss the protruding parts of the ship on the left or right you will get 1500... but you can't touch the controls and if you hit the ship you will die.
There are a few stages where you get a bonus if you kill the enemies in order from bottom to top.
There is a bonus on a few stages if you kill all enemies without missing a single shot.
If you never get your laser to critical during the stage, at the end of the stage you get a bonus (I think it's 500).
...there are more too... hard to keep up with them.
Try to be as accurate with each shot as possible. DO NOT just shoot to shoot. Make every shot count. That's probably the key to success.
It's better to be slower and accurate than faster and not.

Not sure what this means. Does the "winner" of the week choose the game or something? If so, is there a list of games that have already been played (I assume y'all wouldn't want to re-play one of those?)...

Here's a list of games that have already been played, located in a post in the "Main" forum: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html)
Here's copy and paste from comp #1 of this new series:
"The difference between this year's contest and previous years, is that there will not be an ongoing points series, rather stand-alone two week contests.
We will stick to the same general rules, which are:
- One credit, no continues/save states/autofire/hacks etc.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members
- Even if you don't *think* you have a competitive score, post it anyway to keep the thread fun & provide a good sense of score ranges.
- Only post scores that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Some pausing is ok (after all, as someone else posted, many of us have kids/jobs/etc that require our focus)"
What is not listed there, is that whoever comes in 3rd place chooses the next game. : )

It's called ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! Games played so far. You can find it in the first post of almost every compo game.
In the main forum, there's a sticky called High Score Competition rules and scoreboard, which lists the games of the previous competition, bar the last ones.

Very nice score. Better than my current #1 on my current HS list... and something for me to aim for. How many days do I have? Today and tomorrow... hmmm...
:)
-
...couldn't do it. Again, nice score.

Meh, this was just to push acvieluf from 3rd place, I have played this for two hours or so. Afterwards, I've watched a vid of a 100k+ score, he had 31k at the end of sector 2.
It definitely helps to know the secrets.
So, another game done. popsicle, that's what you get for coming back: your turn to choose the next one.

LOL yep, I show up out of hiding and immediately get assigned homework. I'll get on this today.

I did not play this again. Also, KLOV says the voice is digitized, versus synthesized. One is recorded, probably processed to give that electric sound, and transferred to rom - the other is generated wave forms - which makes sense given the vocal inflection and articulation of the sound here (and in Space Fury/Zektor).
-
KLOV is oftentimes wrong.
Flyer:

Clearly says synthesized voice.
Wiki also says speech synthesis...
