Well, I start it off I guess...104180. I don't know the levels very well, so sometimes I get a nasty surprise ;)
I can provide an INP if necessary (recorded on wolfmame 106). I'm sure there'll be alot better scores, and I know I can improve on it a bit.

I played on the master sys too - I'm sure I remember that you could fly on that or at least get some shoes and go above the trees. My local arcade had one (a conversion) as well. A few years ago, me and my partner used to cain this game in MAME, she's still miles better than me at it (and vs super mario too); can't get anywhere near as far as once was able now, but still love it 'cos it's so simple. Seemed easier on a joypad than a cp.
The MARP record is scary, but helpful - not watched it for a long time, but it's a perfect game. Every doll, every fruit at max point values... eek.
-
I used to play Wonderboy in Monsterland on the Sega Master System. I actually finished it... which is tough. But I've never played this version. I'll have to try it when I get home in 2 weeks (I'm on vacation in Panama).
Man, I miss my arcade... :P
-
I always found this to be one of the more difficult side scrollers... Played it a lot on the C64
-
i just tried this game first run "174K" have not played it since : Hudson's Adventure Island on the NES this game rocks even though im terrible at the game.. who wants to sell me the actual wonder boy pcb haha..
edit*
another run 216k which really isnt good also died about 5x in the same spot haha
now 253k..
-
After my time, and the music is annoying. (Someone has to be a bah hum-bug, hahahah.) Cute graphics, though.

I didn't realise that I got the hammer TWICE as I kept dying lol. Got an inp if anyone wants it.
-
.
-
323,720 died alot in the same spot over and over because i was impatient on a particular scene with moving platforms. score is easily beatable. It's nice to see the instruction cards in this game, I put them in before Mr. Do had them obtained them from pinny parlour, does any one have the non-japanese ones? that i can send to him although the guru just got a gigantic pile of instruction cards so who knows what's in that pile.

312160
Think I died in the same place as you mrclean!
Edit, still stuck in the same place, but slight improvement: 319960
-
Slight improvement.
327370
Inp available if needed...
I got a bit further, but kept doing stupid things and missed a couple of dolls.
-
Should be easy to beat, yeah. I'm not complaining. I just haven't had the patience to stick with this game past a few minutes. Good competition for you two, though.
-
it seems as though we almost had identical runs... Your turn....
327,490

Getting better...
447,060
Still lots of crappy deaths at stupid points tho, check the inp!
-
What version of MAME did you use? (it helps to mention that, because I don't think INP's work across different versions)

Ooo-hoof. mrclean maybe out of it now.
-
It's only a couple of levels past where I think we were both stuck. But we shall see. I think the most I ever got was about 550k but that was a long time ago.
-
Well, it's time for me to finally jump in on these threads.
Looks like I'm destined to suck hind teat on this one. Oh well. INPs will be posted when and if I take the lead.

-
Gave up at 600k. Don't wanna make you guys look TOO bad. >:D
601,370 points. Mame 32 v0.125, INP available.
-
Hahahahah. This is all getting good.
-
I have a new idea for the competition's for the future.. the winner should win a piece from the actual game. Maybe it can be the original manual / marquee , side art whatever anything. Maybe an entree fee ? or volunteer donation ?? just a small prize related to the game :blah:

We need sponsorship! Someone talk to someone.
I'm at 452000 and some change. Holy balls at world 4-3. I was wondering when this game would get so hard that I wouldn't want to play it anymore.
For the record, the top 5 scores recorded on Twin Galaxies are as follows:
1. 1,217,240
2. 1,171,780
3. 1,000,060
4. 895,160
5. 510,980
Dr. Frag is halfway to the world record.
-
1,108,180 points. Got up to 7-1. Mame 32 v0.125, INP available.
I'm a bit rusty, but I'll try to beat the "world record" by the end of the week. ;D
-
Whelp... I'm out, you win.

Nice score, I'd love to see the INP. Did you get all dolls up to that point?

Hahah. Four more days, too.

No problem, I didn't realise INP files could be attached. :)
Didn't get all the dolls, I missed 5-1 and 6-4. Not that I planned on doing area 8 anyway.
-
1,924,090 points, finished at area 7-4.
I had to zip the zip of the INP to get it small enough to attach. :)
-
I can't get the inp to work, which is a shame. I tried using MAMEXT 0.125 (the only version of 125 I could locate)

That is absolutely insane. You must have played this game a whole lot to get that good. What is your history with this game? Do you own a dedicated machine? How much have you played it?

Download mame0125b.exe from http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html
Put wboy.zip into a folder called rom
Put the inp (perhaps rename it to something shorter) into a folder called inp
Run the command line mame wboy -playback wboyrecording.inp
Hope that works for you. :)
I did a bit of showing off at the end of area 1, riding the skateboard into the boss's cave. ;D

I played it a lot in the arcades from '86 to the mid 90s, and I got good enough to reach area 5 or so. I even tried to buy a cab of it but I couldn't find one. When it came out on MAME I played it a lot. A lot of reflexive memories came back which made playing easy. I could easily finish Wonder Boy in Monster Land so I was determined to finish the original Wonder Boy.
I put together a Wonder Boy web page with everything I knew about the game, including all the secrets and panoramic screenshots of entire levels. The remnants of it can be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20060821232109/afk.sagamers.com/wonderboy/wonderboy.html
Collecting information and graphics for the web page taught me a lot about the game. I also watched game recordings from MARP, when I could get them to work. Eventually I was able to finish the game at area 7-4, or collect all the dolls and reach area 8-3. My best score at this point was 1.8m, but I was always more interested in going for distance rather than score.
Until this week, I hadn't played it in a couple of years. It all came back to me very quickly though, so I was quite pleased that I could finish it within a few days. :) I really don't have to concentrate until area 5-2, it hits some kind of threshold of difficulty there for me.
Looking at the Twin Galaxies high score, it looks like they probably didn't get past area 7-3 or 7-4. It's quite hard there, and if you finish at 7-4 you can easily get around 1.4 or 1.5 million. At the end, each doll collected during the game is worth another 10,000, and each remaining life is worth 50,000. I had a nice lot of lives remaining which is why my score hit 1.9 million.
Yesderday I collected all the dolls and played up to area 8. I wanted to see if it's as hard as I remember. It's even harder than I remember. :o

I think it has to be zipped, regardless.
-
Yeah, but the zip was still too big. I had to zip it again to squeeze a few more KB out of it. ;D
-
great site man (kinda janky loading unfortunately).
i think it goes without saying that you are the unofficial king of Wonderboy. you should get out there and crush that world record.
-
Yeah, but the zip was still too big. I had to zip it again to squeeze a few more KB out of it. ;D
Oh. I think overall file size is 1mb. Aaaand. The comp's over tonight. Get ready to pick a new game.
-
crosses fingers for you know what game muhahahahaha
-
I was tempted to pick a game I can kick ass in, but then I read Bubble Bobble suggested in an earlier competition. I'd be interested to see what people can do with that. :)
-
Aww... I missed all the fun. But I'm back from vacation... So bring on the next game...

Congrats Drfrag - your wboy site is / was great. Shame bits of it are missing from Wayback.
Who's posting the next thread?
-
.
-
Is it Bubble Bobble then?
Quite like that, but hopeless at it, even with the power up thing at the start.
My suggestions would be:
Track n Field (joking)
Last Duel (I love that!)
Metro-cross <-- Awesome addictive, never played i when I was younger!
-
Yeah do bubble bobble!!

I just spent some time watching your INP. You are a ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- ninja at this game. I kid you not, your performance made me motion sick. Very well done.

Thanks! :)
I choose Bubble Bobble for the next round. I'll start up a thread for it.
