Hello, I'm new here and have just got my first arcade game to restore. It is a 1979 Exidy Crash machine. I have read everything I could find about it ( which is not a lot) however I cannot seem to find any details on how to replace the power supply with a more modern and more importantly, working power supply. The current power supply is an Adtech power model APS 5-6. Also I have checked all 3 fuses that I could find and have tried turning up the voltage on the power supply. Any help on how to convert it without frying the control board would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

There is not that much info on the power supply itself, but the full Exidy Crash manual will give you all the info you need.
The adtech APS 5-6 is a very simply 5V 6A power supply so any good quality one will work. However, you might just want to rebuild the existing one as it's very doable if you have some soldering skills.
Did you measure the voltage it's outputting now?

Super easy to replace the old linear with a regulated switcher. I have pics in my thread here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=146323.0
good day.

Contact Ian Kellogg, he's worked on the Crash PCB for my local Arcade museum. I'm sure he's using a modern power supply adaptor of some sort to test the boards.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had read chopperdogs post on his crash restoration and it was very helpful. I guess what I'm needing to know is are all the wires connected to the power supply running 5v? Is there any way I could wire that incorrectly on a new supply box and potentially fry the circuit board ? Sorry to sound ignorant, I usually build hot rods and Harleys not arcade games. And yes I checked the voltage coming out of the existing one it reads 0.013 with the adjustment turned all the way up so I would tend to believe it's toast.

Your bad linear power supply has 4 wires associated with it (2 are 120v ac and 2 are 5vdc +/-). Look at old supply (if I remember the board on old one was labelled), snip wires and make those 4 proper connections on a new arcade power supply(ac and +5 and ground (not -5.)). As covered in my thread the iron transformer only supplies 6vac for marquee bulbs and 35vac for the sound board.
good day.

Went back and looked at pics to refresh my memory. Attached is a pic that should make it easy to understand. The ac lines are tied together that power the transformer, monitor and linear ps.

Thank you for the clarification. My power supply is a bit different than yours . I will try to post a picture of it so you can see if it is wired the same.
Thanks again

Here is some photos of what I'm working with.

One more question, does anyone have a suggestion on which brand / model of power box I should replace this with? Is this an online item or something I could buy at my local radio shack etc.
Thanks

If you can determine the origin and destination of the wires on 1 2 3 4, I bet 2 will be from the main power plug and the other 2 shoot off to the monitor, and it's obvious that the red and black will be for 5vdc.
This is a standard modern regulated supply that can be had from here or many other places: http://www.arcadeshop.com/i/804/switching-power-supply-15-amp.htm
You would just group the blk and wht wires going to that transformer and hook to ac in and the red goes to +5 and blk goes to common.
good day.

Thanks for all your help. I'll post a follow up picture after installing the new power supply. I also intend to build a new cabinet for it as this one is not in very good shape and appears to have sat outside at some point in its life delaminating the corners of the particle board.

Changing all the capacitors on the monitor is an absolute must. It might be fine for a bit, but you have to think of old caps as original factory tires on a 78 Nova. Yeah it holds air, but wouldn't want to rely on em.
good day.

Thanks for the tip. I dont suppose you'd have a link to where I could purchase those?

If it's your first cap kit I'd go with Ian Kellogg since everything he ships is labeled.
