Not sure what level of chuffy this is but I found this old lunchbox in a house my company is planning on demolishing. Its a nice piece added to my collection of Star Wars memorabilia that I'll never get to showcase.

My first Chuff of 2019....

Turned out they were celebrating Mardi Gras in Galveston yesterday.
-
I have a shiny new server I'm bringing online. I feel pretty chuffed about that.
-
I've also been working in my arcade. Fixed the yoke on my upright Star Wars cabinet. It was twitchy moving vertically.
I had a spare yoke I've had for years (before I ever got the actual Star Wars cabinet). I hooked it up to test and it was twitchy horizontally. I removed the good vertical pot from it, and swapped it for the twitchy vertical pot in the original yoke, and voila - smooth as butter! Previously you couldn't get past wave one or two due to flaky control, now I got through wave three until I got my butt kicked.
Then I removed the old sticker from the yoke, cleaned the crap out of the cover with goo-gone and a razor blade until it was smooth as a baby's bottom, and put on new repro artwork I'd had for years as well. Gorgeous!
I also cleaned the crap out of the arcade glass and the monitor, and *wow* holy crap what a difference it made getting rid of years of grim, really popped now.

Nice. It is good to see you posting arcade stuff here. Thank you for all that you do to keep this site running.

Thanks! After a good long spell of "holy crap where did my life go!?" I'm getting some time to re-geek again, feels good.

With the right software that's basically an everdrive for the PlayStation.

So here's the other bit I got running finally. In one corner of the arcade, next to the air hockey table (yeah, flying pucks, yikes!), I've mounted a flat panel monitor. When the arcade is fired up, it starts playing a mix of 80's music videos, vintage Atari 2600 and other commercials, 80's movie trailers, the MAME arcade video intros from cinemarcade.com (that is sadly offline it seems), and some modern stuff I threw in as well, on a random loop.
Pictures attached - quality is terrible, hard to get a good photo, but when the black lights are on and the machines are lit up, it looks like the music videos are just hovering in mid air in the arcade.
Current play list at the bottom, going to continue to expand it. Particularly looking for high quality Atari/Nintendo/arcade classic commercials if anyone knows a source - I've raided Youtube and retrojunk.com.

Like Howard said its basically a everdrive for the PS.
No more worries of worn lasers and slightly better loading times.
-
I, uh, heard from a friend that you almost certainly meant "Obsession" from Animotion, Saint.
1980s + AC/DC songs + arcade = "Who Made Who". Couldn't find the video?
-
Got a promotion at the beginning of the year, back into a leadership position, after half a decade of taking a step back from any kind of management role. In an art career, when becoming a manager its always a balance of splitting management tasks and art creation responsibilities. Though most companies make Leads do more management than actual art work, but my current company is small enough that I can do both. So its a win-win!
2019 is shaping up to be much better than 18!
-
Good for you Opt. You deserve it.
-
Nice. Ive collected over 1600 music videos over the years...
-
I used to have a bunch, old video game commercials too, but I got sick of having hdds with no space on them.
-
Heh. Media player I'm using has a 32 gig SD card limit so I had to make some cuts. But I just ordered a 128 gig thumb drive which it will also use, so I'll add more then :)
Thank your friend for me! :laugh2:

Man, Ernest Cline could take a page from your book! I totally want to see this, but looks like someone (who the hell is "SME"?) got a takedown on your video...
Also, gotta suggest "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova for your playlist.

I will be highly amused if the answer is "7" :lol

Yes it does, but I was torn between the embarrassment of a man my age bragging about how many he can do, and the thrill I'm feeling. I thought the way I posted it was a good compromise. But being coy is also unbecoming, so the answer is 46. Total, that is. The goal was 40.

The question it begs isnt how many you did, but why you felt compelled to keep a promise to your 25 year old self. He was probably an idiot. Lord knows my 25 year old self was an idiot lol
Congrats on almost pushing your age!!

Oh, in that case, the answer is, indeed, "7".
The goal wasn't so much specifically about a certain exercise, that just happened to be the metric I settled on. 25 year-old Drake didn't allow me to get weak in middle age, and for that I thank him. Maybe not so much for one or two of the tattoos, though.

Nice. It is good to see you posting arcade stuff here. Thank you for all that you do to keep this site running.
I second this!

Good for you Opt. You deserve it.
Thanks brother!

Thank you, and I agree!
Fortunately what I love to do also supplies a decent wage. It's something I worked hard for, and sacrificed to achieve for a long time. Especially from my background, which I won't go into long-winded details of my life story, but lets just say I was one of those kids that got out of an impoverished abusive upbringing, escaped the ghetto by working hard on achieving my dream career.

There's ghettos in Vancouver?
-
There's ghettos in every city. You gotta travel more...
(besides, my youth was spent in Toronto -- Jane and Finch (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jane%20and%20finch)area)
edit: Vancouver is relatively safe though. There are ghettos there, but it's mainly skid row areas, addicts all hopped up on heroin. There are some areas outside of the main Vancouver area, like Surrey, which has some rougher areas (hence the local expression "better safe than Surrey"). But compared to the Toronto ghettos, they're not that bad.

5 years ago I took a 50% pay cut to get out of a toxic job situation. I was making a lot but it was taking a toll on my mental health and all of my relationships. I was basically on call 24/7. I had to cancel vacations multiple times, I never got home in time to eat a single dinner with my family, I took a conference call from the delivery room (after the baby was born and while my wife slept but still), I got reamed out for going to my father-in-law's funeral and missing 2 days of work, etc. I could go on and on and on. Leaving that job was the best decision I ever made. I thought I couldn't do it because of the money and I felt trapped but here I am 5 years later making more now than I did before and working about 1/3 the time. Life is good!

In my world, this is a big deal. I know going into Christmas break you were dealing with uncertainty, which to me, is about the worse thing possible.
So... a big cheers to you! Who knows, maybe this year you'll even be less crabby!

Haha, thanks Lew. Im trying to be less crabby, its just difficult sometimes with some of the personalities here. But I am trying.

Going to San Francisco this weekend, a pit stop on the way to Japan. Off work for 3 weeks. Told my work I am 100% unavailable, taking work email off my phone and not checking texts. They are going to be in so much ---smurfing--- trouble lol.

If youve got time to kill check out Emporium, they opened up about 1 year ago and have a ton of pins and arcades. Former movie theater so they have the big screen running, and of course the obligatory bar to make the whole thing profitable.
-
I'll see if we can detour there. Hardest part will be getting my wife to want to go.
-
Eff that, drive to Sonoma and drink wine. Chinatown takes like an hour to see, don't let her fool you.

I have gout, drinking wine was never an option. Why the ---fudgesicle--- would we go to Chinatown before we go to Japan?

I love San Francisco, although nowadays it is so congested with traffic and homeless people that it's not near as enjoyable as it was when I was growing up. Chinatown is actually a pretty cool area. I wouldn't let the fact that you're going to Japan deter you from stopping by there. The only similarity you will probably find between Chinatown and Japan is the high concentration of Asians. ;)
-
He's only mentioning Chinatown cause he knows my wife is Asian. :)
I wanna see Lombard Street because Ive skated down it....... in Tony Hawk. The rest is up to her. I'll proably eat in and Out Burger both days, gout be damned.
-
Meh, you're the weeb going to Japan for a month. Make sure you pack enough kimonos for ZapCon.

I could really use that "like" button right now. :laugh2:
-
The only Weeabo-ish thing Ive done is marry an Asian, and she's Chinese ya pleb.
I plan to travel a lot. Been to almost every state, including Alaska and Hawaii . International travel has been limited to Mexico, Canada, and Taiwan. Japan this year, and probably Ireland or something in the "UK" in 2 years. No one else in my immediate family has ever left the time zone; I want to go out and see the world not just look at pictures of it on the internet.
-
He's only mentioning Chinatown cause he knows my wife is Asian. :)
Ah, gotcha. I should have figured there was something else going on there. LOL!
Well, San Fran has tons of cool stuff to see. Whatever you end up doing I'm sure you will enjoy your time there.

If its a clear day its tough to beat a walk on Lands End:

In general I think the Presidio and a Golden Gate park are the two best most underrated places in the city. Fishermans Warf and Chinatown are highly overrated tourist traps, IMO.
-
Nah, bro, he needs to stand in line at 6am and then wait 4 hours to go do a tour of a dingy old prison. :lol People were shocked I skipped Alcatraz. Yeah, hard pass kthx. Chinatown was worth a walking tour, if just to see cardboard bins of sharkfins selling for thousands of dollars a pound. SFMOMA was pretty cool, and we did enjoy walking around the Palace of Fine Arts.
-
MOMA is legit, Palace of Fine Arts is cool for a few, especially if you grab a sandwich and some beers and head to Chrissy Field (might wanna brown bag it). Lived in SF for 6 years and never once went to Alcatraz, still haven't, flippin waste of money.
-
Yeah Alcatraz is a HARD PASS from me too. I love museums, but I didn't like MOMA in NYC ; maybe I just don't like modern art. The MET was amazeballs though. Palace of Fine arts looks cool, I'll see if she wants to check it out or do Land's End or both.
I don't mind doing super touristy things , as long as its something I think is neat. Like going to the top of the Empire State building, same with going to the top of the 101 in Taipei ; both were cool even if you have to pay money to ride up an elevator. Alcatraz just seems dumb and I dunno what there is to do or see at the Warf so they weren't even on my radar. Im most looking forward to hand feeding deer at Nara it seems so cool!
-
You can hang out at my place and hand feed the deer. I had to shag a dozen of them off of my driveway yesterday morning before work. I never tried to feed one, but they hang out pretty close to me when I am doing yard work.
-

Nara is legit:

Actually named my second kid after it. Make sure to check out the largest Buddha in Japan while you are there. Been there three times to visit the in-laws, if you want some suggestions PM me, my wife grew up there.

I won't recommend any touristy things, other than checking out the Golden Gate Bridge from Battery Godfrey (https://goo.gl/maps/RB9ruQ7wanm). It's a really nice view, and less congested than the regular look-out points. Its somewhat of a local's knowledge place, you see some tourists there, but for the most part it's pretty empty from the crowds.
There are 2 barcades I used to go to when I was living there. The Emporium SF (http://emporiumsf.com) and Brewcade (http://brewcadesf.com/). Both are fairly close to one another, close to the Lower Haight area.
The Hayes Valley neighborhood is a great place to get lunch/dinner. It's got a lot of nice restaurants and bars, and it's close to the Union area but far enough from it that you don't get the riff-raff spilling over. I recommend Monsieur Benjamin (french) and Papito Hayes (Mexican) to eat at. Excellent food.
If you go down to the Mission District, there are a lot of great coffee shops, and more great restaurants to eat at. Valencia St is where it's at. I recommend a Peruvian place called Limn, fantastic food and it was probably my favorite restaurant in the area.
Mission Beach Cafe is a great place for lunch/brunch. It gets busy there, so expect a wait, but the food is also excellent.
If you're interested in pastries, and baked goods, there's a really popular bakery in the Mission District called Tartine (https://www.tartinebakery.com/). It's one of those more hoity-toity places that always has a line of people waiting to get in. But the pastries are incredible though.
Chinatown is ok, I guess. Not really that exciting, tbh. There are so many other neighborhoods in SF that are much more interesting, and less touristy feeling. Clement St. in the Inner Richmond area is what I'd call a more real Asian area of SF. It's more Vietnamese, but it's a cute neighborhood with a lot of food options as well.
Ok, I lied, just one obvious touristy thing to check out if you're into science: California Academy of Sciences is in Golden Gate Park. It's a really good Science Center place to go to, they put a lot of money into it and there's always a lot of things to look at and learn about. We used to go there frequently with our daughter, and even my wife and I enjoyed it.
Let me know if you need any more recommendations. We lived close to Hayes Valley/Lower Haight area for almost 2 years and we tried to explore the city as much as we could. There are a lot of hidden gems in that city, aside from the more broadcast touristy things to do.
-
I may be going to Japan for a few weeks in June on a biz trip.
Not confirmed yet though so who knows...
In other news if you come over to the UK give me a shout and I will take ya for a pint :)
-
Mal- go to Muir Woods and walk where the speeders roamed. Its a truly wonderful place and unlike any other place.
-
Yes, Muir Woods and beach worth doing. Glad to see a non-food suggestion.

My poor xB is continously violated, but here's what happens when you use Novus for its intended purpose.
-
Nice! Just Novus 3, then 2, then 1, wipe on / buff / wipe off?
-
Scrubbing bubbles, novus 2, fingernails. Repeat.
Had a party. Pictured is a rare sighting of 4 obese men surrounding an aircraft carrier playing tmnt 2.

Looks like a fun time (and a great reason to have a nice big 4 player cabinet). Happy St. Pattys Day!

This whole story is suspicious. First off, is it better than an Arcade1up? I dont know but thats a pretty low bar to to use as a measurement to decide if you should haul some junk home. Second, you were at a party?
Suspicious indeed.

Its better than an A1U because it knows what it is and isnt trying to pretend to be something its not.
Second, I have friends outside this hobby, not like some of you pasty shut-ins. :)
The guy told me the sound was out and that down didnt work. I took it home, reseated the JAMMA connector, and it works just fine. He didnt care what I did with it. I have no plans to keep it, but its interesting to see what was used. Its running a Game Elf 412-1, a decased Dell 4:3, a cheap 4 way joystick (although the 8 way games are all active), and based on the paperwork, it was $800 brand new.

I'm sure I swore I would never do it again, but hey its a free vacation :laugh2: :laugh2: @PBJ Seemingly will be in your neck of the woods for exactly 1 hour, Its a bizarre route to fly, London/Texas/Orlando :)

Not like anyone will get it and I'm a little late for tourist attractions in SF but I had a good time going to 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley.

11 years married today. It almost came without either my wife or I noticing. Never thought wed have a 2 year old at this stage in our lives, and weve decided to have another. Damn, im going to a old man when our kids graduate high-school.
Our marriage is strong, the missus still keeps me on my toes and surprises me with her coolness. Told her I wanted to get a dual-Daytona setup over dinner, and she said shes totally fine with it as long as we have the space when we buy a house. She also countered by asking for a House of the Dead cab.
I got a good one. :)

I MacGyvered this setup to vacuum up all the leaves I have on my property. I looked at purchasing a leaf bagger and / or leaf rake. Both would have run me $350. I bought the attachment for my deck for $25 and rigged up hose and duct work I found at Home Depot for under $50. Not too shabby for something I threw together over two days. The only down side was I had to sacrifice some mdf ear marked for a Nintendo cabaret. Oh well. $225 was saved so I'm not complaining.

I just mulch my leaves....
:dunno
I used to but the magnitude of leaves has gotten so bad it was pointless to mulch them up as it would be as if I didn't mulch them at all. It started to kill my grass in areas where I didn't get much sun. So this bad boy has helped immensely.

This will be my 2nd live online appearance, tomorrow at noon (PST), Ill be getting interviewed on our companys weekly twitch stream, chatting about my background in the game industry, animation and more details of the game were making. Im excited!
Feel free to drop by and say hello!
https://www.twitch.tv/blindsquirrelgames
-
Mafia 3, eh? I bought that for $10, it's still in the shrink wrap.
-
Yeah, before the game we're working on now, all the work this studio did was in ports. We still do a lot of that work now, because it's good money for keeping the lights on, but the idea is to push forward with this original IP and hope that it does well enough to put us into a from-scratch development space.
-
For those who missed it, here's the recording of my interview. It was great to just sit down and talk about the craft of animation.
Plus they allowed me to drink scotch! :)

Haha, yeah "deckals" is pretty big difference from North of the border, aside from the random "eh" being present. My accent has kinda died down since living in America though.
-
Hey. What the hell? I am twenty minutes into your interview and I haven't been mentioned one time yet.

Lol, my bad!

I saw Failure a few weeks ago. I bought a poster from the show signed by the band and got it framed. I need to find a spot for it but I like it.

Thats badass :o
-
They shoulda been hella famous if Ken could only right a hook, but I love them! Fantastic Planet might be my favorite album of all time.
-
Thats badass :o
I agree! The design is awesome and I lucked out because they had left over posters from other dates at the booth that weren't nearly as cool.
I only buy concert posters if they are specific to the show I am at (so I won't buy generic tour posters). Pearl Jam has been doing this forever so I have quite a few of them from their shows over the years but I think recently bands have realized that it is a great way to make some extra revenue since actual music sales are at an all-time low because of streaming and downloads. I love that this poster has the date and the city on it. I got one at the Radiohead show I went to last year at MSG... I'm running out of wall space!
They shoulda been hella famous if Ken could only right a hook, but I love them! Fantastic Planet might be my favorite album of all time.
Have you listened to the 2 new albums since they reformed? They are really really good. Took me a few listens to appreciate them but I think these are exactly the records the band would have made following Fantastic Planet if they had never broken up. They even continue the "Segue" instrumentals throughout both of them. The Heart Is A Monster starts with "Segue 4" and the latest album carries it through to "Segue 12".
-
Having some fun while Im down here for an unfun reason.
Went to an arcade graveyard to visit a collector friend. How often do you get to use an outhouse with marquees laying around?
Also went fishing and caught something edible for probably the first time in 25 years.

Picked up a really dirty Negcon controller at a boot sale when on honeymoon.

Ok I give...what is "chuff"? I looked it up on Google and the meaning didn't seem to fit this thread....lol
1. a person's buttocks or anus.
"the parents should tell their daughter to get off her chuff and earn the money she receives"
-
its the opposite of Naff

Don't feel bad. I didn't know at first either. I had never encountered that term until I saw it here.

We started using it a lot because wed have British builders who threw up their finished projects and more often than not, they would say they were quite chuffed that was done.
I for one encourage its usage. It makes me feel quite chuffed.
Keep an eye out for the Summer of Chuff and Chufftember threads that might pop up.

Somewhere in that rat's nest of cables is a fully working mvs. Got the impedance right on the first try, so I'm pretty chuffed about that.
-
Does the carpet match the drapes?
-
Yeah it's pretty nasty, but I know when I work in that room I don't have to worry about spilling anything on the carpet.
-
Get one of them MVS multicarts
-
That and some "official" 14 pin snk connectors are on the way. This just came in first. I wonder if they are ever going to release another 161 in 1 and put the remaining games on it. Most of the omitted games either suck or are cheap to buy but there are a few I'd like to get an inexpensive bootleg or something.

12 year old me would like to point out that he said wood.
I just picked up a 161 in 1 because they are super cheap.... I'll have to live with the system for a while before I know if I want to invest that much in a sd cart.

Keep an eye out for the Summer of Chuff and Chufftember threads that might pop up.
A Merry or Happy Chuffmas may come up during the end of the year.

It's 2019. You can't say ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like that.

Yeah. Tell that to several other forum members who have used the whole word recently and nobody blinked.

It's ok Mike I laughed. I refuse to change how I talk. Heck I still call flight attendants stewardess and admin assistants secretaries....lol.
-
Eh. I should probably not use that word anymore in that context. It just seemed to fit the conversation. Old habits die hard.
-
Yeah. Tell that to several other forum members who have used the whole word recently and nobody blinked.
I did, but I was quoting "Celebrity Jeopardy" SNL skit :( Personally I don't have an issue with the word and I call things "functionally retarded" more often than I'd like to admit.
You are supposesd to say mentally chufficapped.
Nafficapable
That being said, I don't like the 161 in 1 carts because they are loaded with hacks, and the cart I had every game was set to level 8, so I'd have to go to the op menu and set it back to 4 every time I loaded a game. I'm good at SamSHoII but Im not level 8 good.
I'm chuffed because MK11 dropped, but Im naffed it doesnt support Ultra Wide Screen resolutions. But I did pull off Cassie's decap brutality without knowing how to do it, so that was cool.
-
Well eventually I'm going to get universe bios 4.0 and I think that solves all of those issues. I've read that the 161 in 1 does save settings so long as it's inserted in a single slot mvs. I might throw it up on mame if it's available to see how it works. Kinda naffed that I'll have to fork over the cash twice, once for the bios and again for the adapter board.
Thinking about it I'm not sure how a 2d fighting game could support ultra widescreen considering the screen scroll effects many of the special moves.
-

Soul Calibur 6 and Tekken 7 support 21:9 , I think T7 required a hack though. As for the 161in1, it'll remember settings for the last 3 games loaded, as soon as you load a 4th, the 1st is gone; at least thats how I remember my banana colored cart acting.
-
Heh... that looks hilarious. Maybe there isn't enough arena to stretch it out that far?
If it saves the last 3 that should be good enough for now. I tend to stick to one game until I beat it... don't move around a lot. I've seen various hardware hacks to the carts that improves sound quality ect. might do those as well. This is just a project to keep me busy at night after all.
-
its centered and the same as a 28" 4K display /shrug
Im super terrible at the game and Kronika is one of the least fun boss fights since the liquid thing from Dead or Alive 4

When they talked about time displacement I knew we were in for hell. Frost looks pretty interesting now that she's been cyberized.
Thumb is healing surprisingly quickly. I figure by the end of the week I should be able to play if I put a lot of padding on my bandage.

That really does look daft lol

Those speakers look familiar.

They are actually pretty rockin speakers, good midrange and low distortion. I dont like having a subwoofer at my PC, so I got a good set of regular desktop speakers. I believe they are Z200s , but I only spent like $20 for them.

Proper routing of the drain line...

Don't know what your humidity situation is up in Canada, but those things are 100% going to drip condensation off the vents.

I live in Cheyenne. Humidity hovers below 50%.

Dude, I'm just trying to be proactive. You've got a machine directly below those vents.

I had a hole in the roof for the first 9 months of occupancy. Asked the maintenance man several times to fix it. Always got "I'm always chasing down roof leaks" as a response. That leak would drip directly onto board 5 when it would rain or have excessive snow melt. The last blizzard caused around 10 to 15 gallons to pour through the roof. That was enough. Borrowed a ladder and patched the ---smurfing--- hole myself with a screen repair patch and Flexseal. We've had a few rain storms since, no more leak.
Keep in mind... It may look fancy... But it's just a bunch of dartboards in a garage with a toilet (and now A/C). Everything is insured. If ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happens, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happens.

It worked amazing. I have two large oaks on the front of my property and I am surrounded on three sides by various other trees in my back yard. The only problem I ran into Vigo was I had to wait until the leaves were dry before I could suck them up. Otherwise they would bottleneck at the duct reducer. I'll send you a message breaking down what I used and where to find it.
-
Sweet! Got your message, very helpful thanks!!! I might have gotten myself another project for this summer, but this one is going to save me time in the long run. I have 20+ trees dropping in my yard.

Chuff time! The gameroom gets a few updates.
Earlier this year, I added a foosball table to my game room. In the 90's, I played competitive foosball. Yes it's a thing. Or rather, it was. Back in the day, I'd play in leagues and I'd travel to tournaments and play. We always played Tornado tables and for the most part, that's still the table of choice in the States. This is a late 90's Tornado coin-op model. I picked it up for $500 and put another couple hundred into it to bring it up to current tournament standards. All in all, it was a pretty good deal.
Technically I bought this in late 2018 (December 23rd), and I finished working on it 2019. I've already went and played a couple tournaments. I did terrible and I'm just shocked at the lack of people playing. Back when I played, you could find tables just about anywhere. now I can only think of 2 places in the St. Louis area that even have a table.
The last addition was the stools. I found the stools for $5. They are great. There is actually a small walk way between the table and chairs, it's not as crowded as I think the picture makes it look.
I think this year I'll add a couple more small games and spend some time this winter playing.
-
Looks nice. I had a foosball table, made for home use so no where near the build quality of that. It sat pretty much unused and I actually had trouble giving it away. I was tempted to get an airhockey table but was afraid of it having the same fate.
-
Ill never do air hockey again. In my space, it was so loud. If anyone was playing air hockey, everyone was playing air hockey. The upside to air hockey is that everyone knows how to play and its fun.
I got rid of mine pretty easy. Just had to sell it for 50% less than its worth. :(
-
You are not exaggerating on the air hockey. I couldn't get rid of mine fast enough. It had metal rails. The noise level was unholy.
-
As difficult as a pool table to move, and the only advantage is you can put it next to a wall.
-
I would love a air hocky table but no room :(
-
Just got back from a week in San Diego for work - had a great time and ate so many delicious tacos. Would definitely go back.

Been awhile since Ive done a $0 repair like this. I replaced the back box GI connector on my driver board because I got tired of those lights flickering. Noticed the goalie looked weird. Touched him and realized the only thing holding it together was the cracked decal. Rubber was about to explode. So I added duck tape on the back, put an iPad protector on the front, and wrapped in clear tape. That locks in the original. Then I printed a new goalie on photo paper, laminated it, and glued to the old goalie. This will last forever in home use. :lol

If anyone's interested, today @ noon (PST) I'll be going on stream again for my company's weekly broadcast. We'll be playing Micro Mages (http://morphcat.de/micromages/) for the NES and drinkin' whiskey. Today is going to be a good day. >:D

Thanks for stopping by!
Originally I wasn't supposed to be on stream this week, but the guy who was going to get interviewed got slammed with a last minute workload, so they asked me to fill in. I jokingly suggested bringing in an old console and playing some games on stream while drinking whiskey...and they agreed!

No, you MAKE the time to go bro.

Oh, and congrats on the job!

Please tell me there's something that sucks about opt2not's job. Congrats, Malenko. I'm personally spending a good 10 hours a day pondering my direction in life.
It felt silly to start a whole thread about this, but here's the current project. I'm preeeeeeeeetty sure the xbox hard drive in my turtle box is about to give out. Percussive maintenance and reseating the IDE connector is getting less successful. Turns out nowadays you get a SATA -> IDE adapter and can hot swap a modern drive into these things. Use a program called "Chimp" to clone your old drive onto the new one. Catch with the adapter is it has to be a newer one that supports a Master/Slave jumper. You forget how annoying it is to work with this old junk, but it's still pretty cool that it works.
Well, it might work.
Crapped out halfway through on me last night... but...

Listen here Opt. That is Japanese whisky. Not whiskey. America and Ireland = whiskey. Everywhere else = whisky.
Lesson complete.
Is it 70 dollars good or just good? I don't spend over 30 dollars a bottle unless it is really good.

Very Punny!
I'll be working at the FMC plant in Delaware. Dupont bought out FMC , in Delaware at least , so now they have to hire people like me to convert all the servers and networking from FMC's standard over to Dupont's standards. It pays better than my last gig, but its "Contract to Hire" so there's an outside chance that in 2 years I'll be unemployed.

Meh. 2 years is like infinity from now. You'll probably be dead anyway.

Just good. I wouldn't spend $70 on this one. Nikka has better ones in their lineup that are worth that cost. Like their Pure Malt one.
-
Thanks for the heads up. By the way, I am 20 minutes into your little video and I am still not mentioned.

Please tell me there's something that sucks about opt2not's job.
Well it's not all butterflies and lollipops.
- Unstable Industry: The longest I've been at a company has been 4 years. Every studio I've been at has lasted 2 years average. Games get canceled all the time. Studios either do mass layoffs, or close their doors completely.
- You work with a lot of annoying younger people, and egotistical man-children.
- Lots of overtime, most of which go unpaid because we're all salary.
But hey, no one bats an eye when you're drinking on the job.

That is really ridiculously cool. There can't be too many set pieces more iconic that that, I'm sure I'd be blown away by the Indiana Jones stuff too.

Well, it might work.
And son of a ---smurfette---, it actually worked. I took the old hard drive out of the Xbox case so that I could get the power and IDE cables as flat as possible, reduce any possibility of connector jitter and tugging when I did the hot swap. Let it run overnight, and now I've got an old Xbox with a 7200RPM 2TB SATA drive in it. Seems like UnleashX doesn't recognize that 1.7TB G: partition I have now, but it's working fine without any additional configuration in XBMC. I did have it initially running as an exact clone of the old 160GB drive, but then I took a shower and stood under the water muttering to myself, "what would they think of me if they knew I left 1.7TB of space on the table...."
And, now, mostly for my own future reference when I search on here to remember how I did it:
If youre running a fairly recent bios, the dvd drive check is probably disabled and you can boot up with both hard drives attached and no need to hot swap.
When you get into Chimp, first scan physical ide devices and make sure both drives appear.
Then do master drive options and pick partition information. If the partitions dont show up, run the XBPartitioner tool and choose the option that matches your setup. Probably F takes remaining space if your old drive isnt too large. If you dont do this, your F partition wont copy over in chimp.
Use the option in Chimp 261812 - Clone Master to Slave -> Selective (Select Partitions) -> C, E, F, & G takes remaining space on a large new drive.
Only performance difference I noted was a few more seconds of initial boot time when the system comes on, but I think that's the adapter hand shaking between the Xbox and HD. Once booted didnt notice any difference.
This was the adapter I used, HDE RXD-62987-7
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JVUXMRI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JVUXMRI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Put some tape on the back of it unless you like seeing sparks fly.
EDIT - the new drive needs the SATA adapter jumper set to "Slave" when you're copying the old drive. Change it to "Master" when you install it into the Xbox.
PS: In a second Xbox, when I upgraded a 30GB drive to 320GB, I couldn't figure out how to make the F partition on the new drive large - it always made an exact clone of the F partition and left ~290GB unusable. So I used the options above and ended up with an exact clone of C, E, and F and then a new large partition G. In my case, it wasn't a big deal because that F partition was ~20GB and has almost everything I want on it already, but the rub is there's only like 100MB free on it. XBMC works fine with a G partition, but you'll need to update the paths on your Apps/Video links to point towards it. I've noticed that XBMC doesn't like two copies of the same game on two different partitions. It'll work if you use the file explorer to run the default.xbe, but if you try to navigate to it through the Apps shortcut it's not working. It shows the game one time and doesn't have the icon. You can probably get around this limitation if you use different folder names or something.
-
Nice. If you havent done so already, for longevitys sake you should remove the clock battery. Its prone to failure and battery leakage.

They leak but there aren't exactly large piles of dead Xbox motherboards because of them. Given that the fix is just twisting them off there's no harm in doing it, though. I'll double check but pretty sure I already did that years ago.
Was kind of interesting to see the current state of CoinOps. Looks like the 'community' opinion really changed on that guy and now everyone's moving to XBMC Emustation. That's unfortunately Pi-like but looks promising.

Currently replacing my 30gb hard drive from 2000. It's the one my parents bought me to cheer me up after I nearly died from Mono.

Lies. You can't kill pbj.

That one damn near did. I ended up in the ER having my throat drained of some obscene amount of pus (28cc's, IIRC). The campus clinic had given me so many shots of steroids to get the swelling down that I was at risk of cardiac arrest. ---smurf--- running that place would just give me a shot and tell me to gargle salt water.

Yeah, no. Didn't eat or drink for a week. Didn't have a car. At one point, a friend loaded me into the back of his pickup like a dead body... and drove me back to the clinic. :lol
Anyway, was just funny to open that ancient Xbox and find that hard drive in there.

Super chuffed about this Alan 1 yoke. I received it last week and made a stand for it. It plays great on the Star Wars Trilogy arcade. I still need to lubricate the internals but the controller and board are worth the money.

For the first time in months, no general illumination BS on my WCS 94. This pinbits tool is great. Male connectors on driver board could stand replacing but eh.

To be fair opt hes starting to really pick up pace with production so hopefully wont be that long!
I was 300+ about 3 weeks ago and started off at like 700+ when I originally put my name down!
-
I didn't think the ngpc had enough good games on it to warrant a cart. Anything worth mentioning besides metal slug, ect?
I wish these guys would get with the program and get a factory to help them with production.... most of these carts use off the shelf parts, so if there is enough demand someone in China is eventually going to clone the thing anyway, so they might as well cooperate and make some money.

Metal Slug 1&2, Puzzle Bobble, Sonic, Card fighter few others I cant recall right now.
Its not a mind blowing system but its lots of fun :)

All the fighting games are really good on the NGPC. Great condensing to 2 buttons, and the sprites are really stylized.
Also, card battle clash is my favourite. Neo Turf Masters is great, and the Metal Slugs are on point, though I prefer MS2 rather than 1. Lastly theres a good sonic game, and I like the Mega Man Battle game, similar to the CPS2 game.

Got my poster from The National show in Brooklyn framed and hung in the basement. Got quite a collection of concert posters down there!

I didnt like the design at first but it looks great - the colors are awesome and it fits in with everything else.

Received my new drill press (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQONFY6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The 8" one I had was not able to drill all the holes on the CP I am making. Had to get a deeper one. Can't wait to try it out. I dialed in the lasers tonight.

Oooh Im jealous! Drill press has been in my wish list for a while. Ive been eyeballing everything with the regular drill!
-
Buy the drill press Javeryh. It will pay for itself with reduced aggravation.
-
A drill press is worth it's weight in gold. I got a relatively cheap one years ago and it still works like a champ. Not only will your holes be straighter but like magic things you thought were too hard to drill through become drillable.

Corrupting the next generation - I'm doing my part

Im jealous of your dance pad setup. ;D

You should be. 55" 4k TV and a thumping house rattler subwoofer. Running off a 10 year old laptop. :lol Nobody would play DDR with me at Starfighter. :-\

I brought in an X-men arcade board, Supergun and OSSC set-up for my companys weekly stream. I was going to be on-stream, but unfortunately I had a lunch meeting and had someone sub in for me. But in any case, the setup worked without fail, and we were able to properly stream from the original board.
Pretty happy about that!
Were talking about doing it again next week and Ive been asked to bring in a fighting game of some kind.

Sun in Phoenix ain't no joke. I don't think I've ever been anywhere that's that bright. Lack of clouds in the sky, no big trees, no tall buildings... no idea why it's like that, but there was a severe lack of verticality and shade. It was almost overwhelming, I felt like a human ant under a magnifying glass.
Bring long sleeves and sunglasses, European.

So the trailer floor has been a bit weak around the vents for a while now. Last month my fat ass cracked the floor around the vent and almost went through. The problem is the heating vents are so wide that you can't get to that area of the floor from underneath. I was cleaning out the vents in preparation for laying a new floor when I figured out how to remove a section of the vent pipe from inside the house. Some 2x4's for bracing screwed in via pocket holes (man that kregg jig has paid for itself a million times over) and the floor is sturdy again.
So who has two thumbs and doesn't have to spend all next week putting a floor in? This guy.
-
Good to hear your house repair went smoothly Howard. I love it when you think you are going to spend a significant amount of time on something and it only take a fraction of time to complete.

Nice one Howard!
Agreed house jobs are usually a royal PUTA so its always nice when it goes better than expected!

Finally after 13 years of trying and with temperatures heading for high 30's (In the UK) our boss has finally capitulated and allowed tailored shorts to be worn at work. Oh yeah, today I am going to the work dressed for the beach, Blue cotton shorts, short sleeved cotton shirt and a pair of Super Mario Mushroom Vans, still gonna be too bloody hot though.

Many hours of my life were spent on this. I was up until 3 am. Then back on it this morning. The ending is happy, though.
My Pentium 500 running DOS started booting with a "hard drive failure imminent" message. Which I would have cheerfully ignored except you had to hit F1 to continue. Google says that's one of the four times in history a hard drive warned it was about to fail before it failed.
So... what do? Vertical Pi images all look like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- and have way too many games. Fine. I'll hobble this bastard along.
Start digging through a shitpile and find a compact flash drive and IDE adapter that I had no idea I owned.
Pull out hard drive, open up old Goodwill computer, jumper the ATX supply so I can power it, hook up to my desktop with an IDC -> USB adapter. Dump the contents of the old drive into a backup folder. Hooray.
Thanks to various "undocumented windows features" where it doesn't copy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- even though you tell it to, this compact flash drive refuses to boot when everything is copied back over.
So I burn a Win98 SE disc (remember Win98?) and attempt to install it on the compact flash drive. If I bypass scandisk, it won't boot after installation. If I go through the scandisk process, it says about 5% of the drive is bad. I literally wedge a piece of cardboard on the enter key and let it pound "FIX IT" for over an hour. Oh yeah, also had to bust out the one PS2 (remember PS2?) keyboard I have.
Okay, so Windows installs. Still won't boot. If I boot off the CD, tell it to go to the command prompt, everything runs fine.
FDISK /MBR didn't fix it.
At this point I throw the old drive back in and ponder adding an F1 key to my panel. No, no, can't do that. Take it back out.
And go back to Google. Finally a search for something like "fresh Win98 install won't boot"
Turns out I had to do.... wait for it...
wait for it....
Wait for it....
format c: /s
Once I did that, I was booting to a DOS prompt. Didn't bother trying to install Windows again.
Hooked the drive back up to my other computer, dumped the contents of the backup onto it (skipping the existing files like command.com and such).
And....
Here...
we....
go....

Doing some long overdue touch up and insert flattening on Alien Poker. Heres what 2 hours of work looks like, hence why nobody does this. Many, many more to go.
Process is pushing out the inserts, laying face down on play field glass, heating up with an embossing gun, and using a socket wrapped in masking tape to push it flat while its warm. Then you use a knife to whittle off any distortion you added to the sides and kiss it all with sand paper. Then use a paint marker to touch up the black ink as needed. Stick back in play field with new wood glue. End result isnt perfect but plays much better.

Pricey, but I have one on Gorgar and one on Grand Lizard as well. Had one on my Johnny Mnemonic before I sold it. A lot of people hate them, but they're perfect for old, ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up games.

Yeah thats a solid Gorf. Nice condition.

I must have walked by that game a hundred times and never thought it looked that interesting. Based on Nephs posts I gave it a shot at Zapcon, and I gotta say the gameplay is surprisingly good. Graphics are still pretty crude but the interface is very satisfying.

Yeah, this is back when Midway just blatantly stole other game concepts.... it's space invaders, galaxian, and the remnants of a cancelled star trek game.
When I got it all the metal pieces were rusted or oxidized pretty bad and there was a big crack in the wood (thus the sideart replacement) but it was otherwise in good shape in terms of the cabinet itself. The wiring harness was all cut up though and I've yet to get the boards to show any signs of life. Messed with it a while years ago when I first got it, but for the past 10+ years I've just had an old NEC pc in there running dos and advance mame. It started throwing up errors a few months ago though.... haven't really looked into it but considering the pc is over 20 years old I figure something has just failed. I probably need to upgrade a bit and put a version of mame that supports outputs to get the rank lights working.

Gorf is the sample platter of classic era space shooters.

I'll be building a machine for Gorf soon. You can save me lots of time by telling me which version of mame is the best one for a playable version of Gorf. I remember some versions had unbearable slow downs. I know the arcade also had slow downs, but some of those mame versions were extra bad.
-
Yeah this setup is so old it's back from when every version of mame had issues playing gorf full speed. I'm going to try some different versions though.... I'm wondering if a pi would work... normally I hate those damn things but for a single game setup it kind of makes sense.
-
Eye liner on a pig project slowly continues.
Before at top, after at bottom. Every damn one of these inserts has been removed, cleaned, flattened as best as possible with a heat gun, touched up, black rings redone on playfield, and reglued. I have 4 more at the top of the playfield to do.

It most definitely means that!
We got a 2-car garage now, so Im finally getting my workspace back. Also the garage is already fitted as a workshop area since the previous owner was a handy man of some sorts.
Once were settled in, Im going to throw plans together for Alpha One, which originally was a renovation project, but now Im planning a scratch build with a unique cab design. I also have a couple smaller projects that have been on the back burner for a while.
Looking forward to contributing projects again, its been a while.

Sounds exciting!!

So much truth in this statement.

It's funny because one of my air conditioners (it's Houston, I have 2) took it's annual ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- and all I had to do was take a breather from texting some of you memes all night and send a text to my property manager to summon the AC guy.
Sure, I may be dying broke, childless, and alone but at least the air conditioner is someone else's problem.

As a WVU fan, if there are any crazy "Dana Holgorsen got plastered and...." stories out of Houston, I'd find them amusing.
He made mistakes at WVU and learned from them, so Houston is getting a much better head coach than he was even a few years ago.

UH game wasnt quite the slaughter I anticipated. Its nice to be rid of Major Applewhite as he spoiled a few seasons for me 15 years ago. Ive quite enjoyed my time wandering around UH so Im happy to root for them.
The God of children and fools comes through once again as I survive an exploding tire at freeway speeds today. Inspect those sidewalls periodically.

That's what you call a blowout! Never seen one that bad on anything other than a tractor trailer.

I've had problems with weird cracks appearing along the sidewalls on these tires. I blame the constant heat. Anyway, Discount Tire has my next paycheck on lock and I'm back in business today.

Picked up a 20" 4:3 LCD out of the trash today... and a PC with a Xeon E5506 processor.... maybe this can run Gauntlet Legends...?
EDIT: Can't run Gauntlet Legends without a video card... back to the trash this thing goes.

Im chuffed that this generation brought back bad for something being cool.
I have movers here today, a few 20-something y/os and a 30-something. When they saw my arcade machines they were like oh dang, thats bad, man!.

What did they describe them as when they had to move them!? :D

Well, I cracked open an old clicking hard drive, spun the platters a few times, moved the heads back and forth... And now I'm copying the files off it. Been dead for 10 years. Lot of family photos I thought were gone forever are on this thing somewhere.

Well luckily I had them move a cabaret and a Japanese sitdown (candy) cabinet. No full sized woody cabs.
Those cabinets are light, easy for one person to move. Plus, they made frequent use of their lift-gate.

Yep, pulled the documents folder and now the excavation begins. Im sure stuff was squirreled away in other weird directories but at least its a huge mental relief. I did what could be done and already found some things so Im good.
Now it just makes noise and wont read. Cracked it open and repeated my repair and no change. So this was probably a one time only nuclear option....

The guy I bought it off is on KLOV (goes by Scott451), and is working on creating the Tempest, Major Havoc, Omega Race, & Quantum games on an FPGA board for use in a Wells Gardner 6100 Vector monitor. He's breaking new ground on some of this stuff, and his lab was impressive. We talked for over an hour about arcade stuff. The guy even got access to the machine and code that was used to create the death star in the first Star Wars and recreated the exact code on an FPGA board, and allowed me to play with some potentiometer nobs and rotate the death star in all directions. Very cool to nerd out with a fellow arcade guy who will forget more than I'll ever learn.

Those beat up machines are a crime against humanity. For the love of god somebody get some proper side art for that MK II. I mean the generic black vinyl I get, but "ARCADE" on the side.... the perpetrator must be flogged until soggy.

 It's funny you posted this as I had my first get together with friends this last weekend since buying the machine and it was a hit. Funny how a Black and White game with "just" buttons, can still be so entertaining. Those bullet shots on a real vector just can't be duplicated.
I already have my place in line for the FPGA board that Brian demoed at Zapcon. I was blown away with that board, and am already scheming ways to play all the games.

My recollection was that it was an MK2 panel. They charged me $9 for a vodka soda, so I wasn't exactly going to stick around and pump quarters in their games.

I have thought about getting one of these a few times but the price was always to high and for the amount of games it could actually play I could never justify it.
But I saw this bundle going for a fair price and thought what the hell, Going to treat myself for xmas :)

I walked 10 miles in Phoenix today. Theres a pinball arcade accessed through a walk in freezer, and theres a video arcade across from the ASU campus. Theres also a brewery that sells deep fried Brussels sprouts. Thus far, this has been a good trip.

I finally finally finally finished the makeover for my kid's room - I'll leave the decorating to her but construction and painting is complete. Started back in June and all other projects went on the back burner. Wanted to be done by school starting but no such luck. I learned a lot - mainly that for a project this big I'm hiring someone next time - but I think it came out... OK. There are a lot of little things I would do differently but I don't think anyone will really notice all of the imperfections once the bookshelves are filled and the room is decorated.
I learned a fair amount from this project like how awesome nail guns are and how not to cut crown moulding and how thick you can go with the caulk/spackle to cover up huge mistakes. Painting it (primer + 2 coats) pushed my patience to the limit. Lots of nooks and crannies where paint wanted to drip and also meant a ton of brushwork.
The final touch was wiring up the chandelier although I'm not sure it will be the final light fixture. I'm happy it's over (and I like it!).

That looks great. Nice work.

Damn Javery, that looks great!

Thanks guys - I'm so glad it's over so I can get back to more important things...
-
Yeah javeryh, that looks really good. And to be fair to you, even if you paid contractors to do it, they are not perfect as well.
I recently paid to get my kitchen renovation done, and there are definitely parts of it that have some 'mistakes'. Mistakes that we can live with, for now, but I'm sure my OCD will get the better of me and I'll have to fix them later on.

Trim molding was invented to cover up mistakes. I use a lot of trim molding.

Oooohhh kitchen renovation... that's the next "major" project on our list. How did that go? We can't decide if we want to knock down walls and relocate water and gas lines like crazy people or just get new cabinets, appliances and countertops and call it a day. We are leaning towards craziness only because my kitchen takes up 1/4 of the first floor yet there isn't enough room for a table so there's a lot of wasted space in the middle of the room (and not nearly enough for an island). Seems expensive though!
-

It went really well!
Our home was built in the 60s, and the kitchen needed a full reno.
We actually did end up moving water and gas lines, like crazy people. Moving the stove placement also came with ventilation relocation, closing a doorway to gain some floor space which we put the fridge in, And that increased counter space. The laundry closet had a full-sized washer/dryer, so we divided that closet in half and installed a stacked washer/dryer, further gaining more counter space. In case youre wondering, our garage is unfortunately not attached to the house, so thats why the laundry was installed next to the kitchen originally.
We installed new cabinets w/ the soft closing hundred, new appliances, and a bigger (farmhouse) sink. Recess lighting...even converted that weird pantry cabinet on the right to a "coffee counter".
Overall it took about 1 month for the whole project. It wasnt cheap :(
Were really chuffed with it now, its new and modern and spacious. We *might* look into getting an island later, but I kinda like the openness of it now.
-
That looks fantastic! I think I would put an island in though. I like counter space (not that I have any in my townhome).

Correct! We moved in at the same time the reno started.
I don't recommend living through a renovation. In retrospect we should have got the reno started before we took possession of the house. But instead, we moved in, put most of our stuff in the garage, and lived out of the bedroom side of the house while the kitchen and part of the living room was worked on. It was hell.

Make a standing cocktail and put laminate on it and it will blend right in.
Use thick plexiglass on the top, buff out the scratches once a year.

Wow what a difference - so open and the layout make a lot more sense. It came out really really nice. I'm not sure you need an island either unless you would still have plenty of space to walk around it. A friend of mine crammed an island in their kitchen and any time there are more than 2 people around it there isn't enough room for them to pass each other because of the narrow walkways around the thing. Big mistake, IMO.
Did the contractors need to get access from the basement to move any of the lines or could they do it all in the kitchen? My basement is finished so any work in my kitchen would need to be done from above, which probably means ripping up the floor in spots.
My house is coming up on 100 years old (I also have a detached garage but my laundry room is in the basement) and the last time the kitchen was updated was before we moved in 16+ years ago. It looks OK-ish but the cheap home depot laminated cabinets are peeling all over the place. We also renovated the rest of the first floor about 6 years ago and by opening it up we lost a TON of cabinet spaced/storage. We currently have nowhere to store food in the kitchen - the pantry (if you can even call it that) is in the basement, which is a pain.
After seeing what you did I'm going to really explore doing something in my house soon - it makes a huge difference.
Take out the walls. That's what I did. It made a world of difference.
Normally I'd agree with you 100% but the kitchen is actually the only room on the first floor that has any walls at all. The rest of the floor plan is open (and even the kitchen has a bar with 4 chairs so that "wall" is 1/2 open too). It's definitely a design issue for me because if I took down the last wall I could probably get a really nice island and a lot more storage and just make it all work better, however, this would mean not a single wall on the first floor other than the outer walls, which I think would look very weird. Or maybe not? I need to get some designs done to see what it would look like.
-
Am I the only one that hates open floor plans? The "great room" concept works when you have no air conditioning and need air flow, but all it means is zero privacy and everything is loud in a modern home.
-
I tend to agree. I like a kitchen that is open to a dining room, but it stops there for me. I think the tend is swinging back to rooms again anyway, I am hearing more and more real estate people suggesting to think twice about options before bashing out walls.
-
For me, it depends on the size of the house. My entire footprint is 22' x 35' (roughly) with a 12'x12' walled kitchen so although the rest of my house is "open" it is still quite small. When the house used to have individual rooms, there wasn't a single wall you could put a 3 cushion couch against - not enough room with doorways and wall lengths. So it works for us and I'd never go back.
-

I very much depends upon the overall layout, but I'm not a huge fan either. As you say walls keep things quiet and well insulated.
-
I lived in an apartment for a year that was a bedroom on either end of a giant 15x40 room. It was useless. You couldn't do anything in that room. Either line all your furniture in a row against the wall or turn it sideways and block foot traffic. It was the biggest waste of 1,200 Sq ft I've ever seen. We moved into a 750 sq ft place divided into small rooms and it was infinitely superior
-

Heh, you know you're not from California when...
No one has basements in Cali, this is earthquake country over here! In California, especially Southern Cali, the old way of doing pipes and gas lines was to run it through the concrete floor slab. This was kind of a pain to deal with since the gas stove had to be relocated from that little peninsula and moved to the wall. My contractor had to bust up the floor slab in two places, one where the gas line came out of the floor for the stove -- to seal the line and fill concrete in -- and the other to junction the gas line to the position where the stove is now.
For electrical it would be run through the attic down to the walls, but also now-a-days most things get ran through the attic rather than the floor slab.
Lucky for us, the previous owners updated and replaced the water pipes so all we had to deal with was the gas line in the floor.
My house is coming up on 100 years old (I also have a detached garage but my laundry room is in the basement) and the last time the kitchen was updated was before we moved in 16+ years ago. 100 y/o! Yeah, you are due for some updates. :)
The kitchen was our priority for reno's, it's the most expensive task out of what we want to do to the place. We eventually want to re-do the bathrooms, but the kitchen was really important given that the original was so tiny with not much storage and counter space. it really does make a huge difference once it's done since the kitchen is constantly in use for our family.
Am I the only one that hates open floor plans? The "great room" concept works when you have no air conditioning and need air flow, but all it means is zero privacy and everything is loud in a modern home.
I'm partial to both. But I think our house has a good compromise between the two. Our kitchen and dining area is opened, but the living room is confined from them. We have a semi wall dividing the kitchen area from the living room (it's really just a threshold opening with pocket doors in the wall if we wanted to really close it off), and a side hallway that leads to the 'bedroom wing' of the house.
For our reno's we actually put up a wall, rather than taking 'em down. We filled in that small side doorway to the kitchen, which lead to the front door area of the house, so now when you walk in you have to actually make your way through the living room to access the kitchen. Which is fine, it keeps the noise from the kitchen/living room contained, and it gave us more counter space in the kitchen.
The house feels a bit more open than normal, but without having 1 giant great room we have 2 spaces that keeps the layout semi-open.
-
Heh, you know you're not from California when...
Ha! Never even crossed my mind... I'm in NJ and pretty much every house has a basement (along with water issues ;D).
100 y/o! Yeah, you are due for some updates. :)
It's been a slow process. 6 years ago we basically gutted the entire house other than 2 bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen. We added on a family room on the first floor, master bedroom/bathroom above that and a full basement below. We even dug down in the existing basement, which had 6' ceilings and was unfinished, to match the new basement floor level in the addition so now everything is 8' down there. In the process we also redid 2.5 bathrooms so there are all new cabinets, floors, fixtures, counters, etc. for those. We turned 1/2 the old TV room into a home office, we replaced the roof and all the siding and got new windows (except for 8 of them which I still want to replace). You'd never guess the age of the house by looking at it because almost everything has been replaced by now!
It just seems never ending - I have a list of at least 5 "big" projects left to do - remodel the kitchen, remodel the attic (it's a walk-up and it's our guest room but it needs gutted for new sheetrock), get a new driveway and garage slab, redo all the hardwood floors in the house (we have no carpeted rooms other than the movie room in the basement so it's a big job) and redo the entrance to the house (all the molding is rotting around the front door). Ugh. I do love this stuff though - just wish everything wasn't so insanely expensive!
-
I used to watch This Old House when I was a kid and it gave me nightmares about homes in New England. Pretty sure every house up there was built out of mud and plaster. Every $20,000 renovation and add a sunroom turned into a $200,000 rebuild the whole damn house.

Yeah defo stick the max force duo roms and flash upgrade in there :)
-
Thats the plan! I actually might clean it up and load it out to a friends barcade.
-
Looks in pretty good nic anyway?
-
Yeah, its in great shape. No broken wood pieces, intact side art with just a few scratches. Everything works. Im looking at some new shells for the guns.

Yeah I would like some replacement shells for mine.
Happ still sell them but the cost to buy and ship them to here would not be worth it :(

So I go to participate in the high score contest, and fire up the cabinet I made as cheaply as humanly possible out of a surplus Trinitron Monitor from the mid 90s, surplus Dell SX270, and a shipping pallet.
Turn on cabinet, fans roar, no picture. Okay, fine, monitor problem. I disassemble the cabinet thats actually bolted to the monitor frame to hold it together, pull out the beast CRT, and start taking apart the monitor. Turns out it wasnt the monitor. That monitor displays absolutely nothing without a signal coming in. I should probably write a note to self about that and put it inside. So I put the monster back together.
If SX270 didnt send chills down your spine already, that was one of the Dells with bad caps.

Looks like thats the problem there. Pulled them off, and it was almost impossible to clean out the holes. I finally had to put my soldering iron on 845 degrees, shove a Bobby pin into the hole, and heat up the pin while pushing as hard as I could on the pin. Not sure if it was the corrosion or lead free solder but damn.
Testing with an LCD, this should have been step 1...
And back together.

Best part of this whole exercise is that it turns out that Empire City isnt even on this cabinet!

I used to love playing this game.
Is the psone version any good?
I have a PS2 I could play it on if I got the right gun.

Quick question. Who does the laundry in the house?

We were married precisely 1 week before we decided everyone would be happier doing their own laundry.
We are also a "lid down" household.

I never have understood that one. Women say we are dumb for forgetting to put the seat down yet they are so stupid that they try to sit on something without looking at it first. I leave the seat however the hell I want and I don't get mad if someone moves it into another position when they go to the bathroom. You know... like a rational human being would.

Judging by the picture Id say he figured out the secret handshake.
-
Yeah, people in Houston have been vibrating for months about this place opening. No secrets around here. We drove out there for Black Friday and it was at least 200 cars in line.
About 40 ahead of us in line tonight, still lots of police directing traffic. 30 minutes, not too bad.
I think Braums is still the best drive through burger you can get right now, but this place was good. Probably knocked Sonic out of our rotation. Whataburger is yankee owned now so meh.

Company is privately owned by a 37 year old woman. Grandpa died and left it to dad and dad died in like his 60s left it all to the daughter. According to Bloomberg shes worth a $1billion. Some people hit the lottery.

I was in Houston yesterday - flew there in a private jet, which was really cool. Had dinner at Pappas Bros. It might be my new favorite steakhouse. I wanted to hit up Vic & Anthony's but it was an Uber ride away and the people I was with wanted to walk. Pretty good "work" day if you ask me...

Works for Hess confirmed.

Are they based in Houston? I was just there for a quick meeting - one night only so didn't have much time to explore. Seemed like a nice little city...

Yes, New Jersey and Houston last I heard. Oh well, say hello next time

Also - rented a bounce castle. This has been one of the best decisions in my life.

A few party pics. Probably around 50 people came and went.

Nice - looks like fun.
So yesterday I took my son to our annual Giants game and they actually won. We had 5th row seats on the 20 yard line - one of the benefits of them being terrible is cheap tix. Eli's last home game too. We had a nice tailgate - food, throwing the football around and playing some cornhole. Great day.

Chuff worthy? I don't know.... I guess it is to me!
Found a compressor on the side of the road that said "Free, but pops circuits". It was a nice looking compressor and the price was right so I stopped and picked it up. Fiddled around with it and the problem is it has a leaky regulator. It's a $30 fix, but I decided to throw it on Craigslist as-is for $40. It sold this morning. I had about an hour into it and now I have $40 to throw into the new fish tank project guilt free. Total time investment was less than 20 minutes.
Not sure why I'm so happy with this $40, but it's nice when things work out.

Got the Area 51 out of storage, swapped out the hard drive for the Compact Flash multi kit, and replaced the burned out marquee bulb. It all works great!

The Chinese are committed to their hoax of global warming and it's 75 degrees here, so I'm apparently smoking brisket for Christmas...
Actually had a qualified candidate apply for my job opening....
No fistfights with the family during our gathering....
Shiny Xbox One I bought myself sitting under the tree....

The Christmas forecast for Cabin Creek is around 70 at the warmest and 63 at the coldest. That's West Virginia folks, not Texas. I plan to wash the cars and maybe wash down the house for xmas.. time to break out those Christmas jorts!

No ill will intended and not trying to bring the chuffy thread down.
Just pointing out that in my life, the amount of retro junk available to readily purchase, combined with the amount of folks with good intentions in my life, seems likely that I would be over-flowing with retro stuff. Of course I would be appreciative as I'm sure everyone here would be.

Thanks for the lecture, Dad. Im sure Lew and I know how not to be an ---uvula--- when we get a crappy gift, thank you.
-
I dont think it would be a crappy gift. Youre dead inside if you cant have fun with it.
Been playing the Xbox One I bought myself. Microsoft is throwing so many promos at this thing you almost feel sorry for them. I didnt think you could do worse than the PS4 interface but here we are. Graphics look good until I fire up Spider-Man on my PS4... but its good enough. Controller plays a little more naturally, though. I got in on that 5 cents a day game pass deal, so its difficult to foresee buying more games anytime soon. My wife and I have enjoyed Overcooked a great deal.
-
Agreed. I've had fun with plug-n-play units I picked up for a quarter at a yard sale. The a1up units are far from perfect but they are cute and play the games we all know and love.
In regards to the xbox...Really, because I feel that the PS4 interface is the inferior one.... it's like "my first gui" no personality at all. In addition, you can arrange all the games and apps on the unit for quick launch like you can in win 10... I prefer that over what Sony did. The graphics on both are about the same, but yes, Spiderman looks (and plays) particularly amazing. Too bad about the gamepad. At least Sony has improved this version of enough to where I don't have permeant gaming claw after extended play.
Also with the purchase of a psvr I am officially "that guy". You know, the one that buys all three systems for a generation, plus all the weird add-ons for said systems... can't say it isn't worth the effort considering any time there is a sale on anything it doesn't matter if it's platform specific, I'll be able to play it.

Hell yeah bro. I don't discriminate. I figure why date chicks and only get half the population when you can date both dudes and chicks and get 100% of the population.

The chuff is coming in hard this year. I finally pulled the trigger to go to Zapcon in April and I have a repo 1983 Star Wars standing arcade cabinet lined up for a project I have been wanting to do for quite some time. Expect the project log in the coming weeks. I also got the Lego Millennium Falcon (75257) for Christmas. *see below* I think I'm happier that my daughter enjoys using it more than the fact I got it as a gift. Teach them young.

Nice. My son got the X-Wing for Christmas and we had a lot of fun building it together. The $800 Millennium Falcon set would be so sweet but just a tad bit out of my price range...

Never got the point of those Lego sets. Carefully follow instructions and then you're stuck with a giant and very expensive paperweight.

Yes because no one here builds anything large.... ::)

Yeah, but I can actually play with an arcade cabinet after it's built. What the hell do you do with a $200 Lego model? "Yep, I followed them there directions real good." :lol

Well if it actually was a model I might get it, but it's a blocky, ugly approximation of a real model made using children's building blocks. I like models... used to love them as a kid. I liked lego as well, but not to make models but rather to use my imagination and make whatever I want... which I think is supposed to be the point of lego.
-
I like building them. They are a conversation piece at my parties. I have a few that I built with my son.
-
I loved Lego as a kid but I used to build stuff out of my own head.
But I agree its about the build not the end result.
If I had kids I would love to sit on the floor and build stuff with them.

Thats what it is about for me now. To share in the same excitement with my daughter that I had when I was her age. She may grow out of the Lego phase so I will enjoy it while I can.

Frankly the idea of being a father scares the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- outa me.
I mean genuinely terrifies me!
But little things like that almost make me want a kid....
Then I remember that they keep you awake at night before that and then pester ya for decades after lol

Kids are easy. Now I'm not saying it isn't a rollercoaster of emotion. It is. But you just have to roll with it. I'm sure its something you and Mrs. Titch can handle if you are trying to create a baby Titch.

You tend to pick up where your significant other can't and vise versa. You would be surprised, if you become a dad, what you are good at. My wife is good at overall care while I tend to be more of the emotional supportive parent. TBH I really thought I would have more patience but in the end you work on your faults and the family grows as a whole.
