Title: Painting coin doors
Post by: MAMErGAMEr on July 10, 2003, 10:22:49 am
Grrrrr darn pages expiring and al that.
This will be short as its my second tinme writing this.

Coin door, before and after. I used stone paint, paint that has texture and it gives the door a more authentic look.

Looks way better, but I dont really like the shine that the clear coat gave it.
Oh well.

neato... I hope that's tape in the slot where the coin rejection thingies are... and that you didn't stone fleck over the red coin rejection thingies. (not that it would matter to me... was just wondering)

Maybe I'd have to see it in person, but to me it doesn't look that great.  Kinda like, well, rock.  But then again, I'm biased.  I've been working on so many coin doors lately, I've got the idea that they should all be powder coated.

I busted out with the rustoleum. It already had texture so it didn't need any more. It just needed a different color.

Powder coating sounds like more time and money than it's worth. Spray paint is like $3 and it's not like it has to survive WW3. When was the last time you spray painted something and it went to hell just sitting there in your house.

You're just a spoil sport. A 1,000,000 mcd LED will light that puppy up just fine, thank you very much! Whatever you do, don't look directly into one of those suckers though! Sharks with lazer beams stuck to there heads hurt less!

Of course thats tape, just forgot to take it off. :)

I think its a little too thick also, powder coating would be ideal but I agree with what AlanS17 said powder coating is too much money and isnt needed.

To each his own eh?

You obviously don't have small kids!

But what I did on my own coin door (which came out far, far better than I thought it would) was completely strip the door of parts.  I took the metal pieces and scrubbed it down with a brush and dish detergent, rinsed, and toweled dry.  I lay it down and let it dry for an hour.

Next, I gave the door a light coating of gloss black Rustoleum, followed by two more to brighten it up.  Since the door was already in really good shape, I didn't need to take this down to the metal.  Followed up by baking in the oven @ 175 degrees for an hour.

I cleaned the mechs, and gave them a treatment of WD-40.  Took the eject mech apart, and cleaned the 20 years of finger good off with some degreaser.

I only wish I'd taken some before, during and after pics.

Powder coating isn't that expensive.  Depending on where you go, you can do a door for $10 or so.  Yes, more than $3 for a can of paint, but with a nice factory style finish.

I found a spray paint that has a "hammered" look....but it came in an odd chrome-ish color.  So I painted it with that, then gave it a coat of flat black.  I was very happy with the results.  I had to fill in some holes where a padlock had been brutishly installed, so the hammered effect helped to hide the imperfections....

Exact same coindoor as above, by the way.....

I did my coin door the same as peale's minus the baking.

Baking makes it cure faster.  I was impatient.

nb: can we resize these images a bit?  Everything is getting stretched out big time.

Not being mean here, but the texture is too rough, it should look bumpy, but smooth.  That texture looks more like concrete... But as stated, to each his own ;)
