Title: Embed Youtube videos in your messages now!
Post by: saint on November 05, 2007, 10:15:11 pm
You can now embed YouTube videos in your messages. Like any of the other BBC codes, simply surround the URL of the YouTube video with youtube /youtube brackets, like this:
Code: [Select]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/xyzabcdef[/youtube]

And you should get something like this:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NQBFWx3UOk[/youtube]

Thanks to McCoy for the suggestion and Stingray for pointing out the mod :)

A question on the youtube mod... does that stream the video directly from youtube, or does it route the data through your servers on the way to the client?  That would be my major concern.  If it's somehow coming through your server that's a major bandwidth issue, and if it's not, that's creating a drain on youtube's server for no gain to them (old school don't steal my bandwidth style).

I realize that in order for this to have worked youtube must have provided an API for it and thus is in on it, just curious as to the implementation.

Just like a photo tag it links to an off-site server.  No additional bandwith for the forum aside from the extra text required to make the link.

Comes from their bandwidth. YouTube seems to be ok with that as they provide the code to web operators to embed video pretty much anywhere on your site from their servers.

I wonder what they get from that... I guess it's less bandwidth than everyone just linking to their pages, but then again, at least that gets users onto their site.  This is just serving up content to anyone anywhere with little in return.

My guess is they are banking on the exposure. The youtube logo is conveniently displayed on the bottom right.

It's what Google does, man.  Look at what they're doing with Google Calendar, Google Docs, etc.  Now the Google phone is coming and it's going to have seamless integration with all that (presumably it'll have seamless integration with YouTube too).  Same with Google Maps.  They buy the Keyhole Earth software thing, change it from super expensive to super free, overlay GIS maps of streets, etc., and it's all free.  Everybody uses it, and pretty soon commercial applications just grow organically out of it and they start raking in shitloads of money.  Often I look at the way things work out and think . . . jesus, did they plan for that to happen or do they just get lucky?  By the way, Google bought Sketchup a couple years ago, and at first I thought the acquisition made no sense at all.  But I've decided that I think they plan to start modeling the world in 3D, which they will then add to Google Maps.  Every building, etc.

If there is one name that doesn't need additional exposure right now, it's youtube.

shmokes is probably right... it's just their business plan.  And look at their market cap.  Clearly I am not understanding their vision and just as clearly it's working.

Scroll up to Saint's original post... See the video screen? See the big 'play icon' symbol in the center of the video image? Click anywhere but the 'play icon'.

in the end, theyll get nothing. well see how many 'facebooks' and 'youtubes' are around after the next major recession  ;)

saint,

This doesn't appear to work anymore.  Or maybe I'm doing something incorrectly.

EDIT:  It actually works (sort of) if you just paste a raw YouTube link into your post without the "YouTube" BBC code tags around it.  It embeds the video, but it centers it on the screen (probably should align left) and it has some strange text at the bottom of the video in red that says "! No longer available" for some reason.  You can see it in action on this post...

It has been on the "things to fix" list for a while now.  :(

Howard mentioned a while back that the current HTML code for YouTube embedding is deprecated by a number of browsers like IE, but it still works in others like Firefox.

The workaround that I use is:
1. Paste the video URL with no tags and change the "https" to ""http".  (for browsers that still support embedding)

2. Paste the URL with URL tags.  (for browsers that don't support embedding)

So far, the code should look like this.
Code: [Select]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSH_jSqos8M

[url]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSH_jSqos8M[/url]

3. Post it.

4. Modify the post to replace the auto-generated "! No longer available" text with "Using the IoT Relay on a USB Port - Example".

Before:
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSH_jSqos8M][b][color=red]![/color][/b] No longer available[/url]
After:
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSH_jSqos8M]Using the IoT Relay on a USB Port - Example[/url]
I know this process is a real pain, but for now it's the best way to work with both embedding and non-embedding browsers.   :dunno

Thanks.  I'll use your workaround for now.

Here's an SMF forum plugin for YouTube links...

I was last updated in 2014 so it probably still works.

Using the latest Firefox, it does not embed with tags. It will embed in the preview with only the address with http, but in the posting shows "!No longer available" which is hyperlinked to the video.

So what happened to youtube embedding?
