Title: Rowe-Ami Cd100 CD PRO issues
Post by: bjwizzer on February 02, 2020, 11:28:21 am
I have a CD100 that has been upgraded to a CD Pro player, that is how I bought it. The player played fine for about 6 months then started the "spin twice" and put the cd back into the carousel. This symptom usually indicates that the optics were bad. I ordered a "new" cd optics unit and installed it. Now I have a different symptom. While it will play the cd, now after about 1.5 minutes into the song the player will stop playing and cancel the song and put the cd back into the carousel. If I play an album, it will stop playing after around 1.5 minutes and go to the next song, play that song for 1.5 minutes and do the same thing. I was sent a replacement optics unit and still I have the same issue. I am an "old" IBM'er "break fix" guy and have been tinkering with juke boxes for a while, this issue has me stumped. The label on the board mounted on the player indicates that it is a CDM12. The mech control computer number is 61086202, I already tried another "MCC" and the symptom remains. The Seller I bought the cd optics from has an excellent sales history.  I hope someone out there can provide some information.
Thanks,  BJ

BTW- the 1.5 minutes is a rough guess and the "CCC" firmware is 3.7

have you re-initilized the CD's again since you've replaced the laser? (service mode switch on) 3-0-popular-clear-clear (service mode switch off) leave for 15 minutes...

i ask because the computer can do weird things if it's detected multiple CD errors from the player unit. also check your CCC settings... i don't recall off the top of my head if it's rowe or NSM (we had both) but one of them has a "max track time" kind of option where regardless of the length of a song, it will only play a certain time before canceling. (CD's with hidden tracks... 20 minutes after the last track song is another etc.) this may have been inadvertently turned on or your battery is low causing settings corruption. the battery in the CCC can easily be swapped out for a battery holder and a standard CR2032 battery

Hello again,
The Vendor I bought the laser optic unit from was kind enough to send me a replacement
laser optic unit which I installed the other day.....

I still have the same issue, here are what I have done so far.

The CCC battery measures 2.9 VDC, plenty there to hold the configuration
Initialized (code 30) the entire carousel of CD's
Disc condition is at Factory Default - 5 - skip = 99

I tried another mech controller - same issue
I watched the CD led on the Mech controller and it would flash every second the CD
would play, when it stop blinking the CD playing would cancel.

BTW - I am an "old" IBM'er, so I have used ESD precautions every time I have handled
the cd player.

Any ideas will be appreciated

Probably time to either send the player assembly out for repair or flat out purchase a new player assembly.

Well I guess I'll be parting out this CD100, I was hoping someone out there
had the same symptom with their CDPRO player and had a fix or did they
get their player fixed or replaced.....BJ

SOLVED!!!!

As a last resort I did a Factory Reset, taking the 'CCC" to Factory Defaults.

After programming the CD100 for free play and free albums I am
happy to say the CD100 is working fine!

NO MORE PARTIAL PLAYS!

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

i'd still say your battery is going bad.

the first sign of things going south is settings corruption. the lithium cells used in these older CCC's (as well as other battery backed RAM) have a peculiarity about them... they output their full voltage over the lifetime of the cell... but their current delivery capability drops.... then the voltage starts to tank.

It gets to the point where if you were to have one running an RTC RAM chip, you can actually see the clockticks as they consume current when they write to memory. write too many bits (a year, month, hour, and second) consecutively at the same time, the current draw of the writes sags the battery down enough to cause corruption elsewhere in the chip. (typically ever so slightly higher power consuming bits get killed first)  the power consumed on standby is in the order of microamps... but by this point...the battery is only JUST capable of outputting only this much.

left alone i'd say in another couple months, your settings will be corrupted again... then a couple weeks after... as the battery is capable of outputting less and less current, it takes less and less bit writes to RAM to screw it up. you'll find your battery voltage has gone from 2.9 to under 2 volts. your current is gone and your voltage is now beginning to tank. before you know it, your setting no longer save and your battery voltage is 0.2v

Thanks! LilShawn,

I'll convert this "CCC" to a button battery holder and CR2032 battery.

I had 10 "CCC's" and converted them all then sold them on Ebay.

Dummy me, I didn't save one for myself!
