R-Type - Let's try to bring this one back.....
« on: January 15, 2010, 07:16:32 pm »
I recently picked up a Dedicated R-Type machine from Craigslist. The seller told me the game used to work, but the screen began to flicker then eventually the game stopped working. I got the cab for 100$ and it's in fairly good shape. When I plug the game in and turn it on, the monitor turns on, but there is a really high pitched sound and the game doesn't turn on. The screen has some white spots in the corners as well.  Anyone have any ideas?

Does it play blind - eg when you drop a quarter can you hear game play?

I'm sure the monitor is original - prob needs a rebuild at the very least.

Just tried it. When turning it on, the screen lights up and you only hear "Buzzing coming from the speaker area. I tried around 10 coins in each and nothing about it changed. You think the Game is dead?

First of all, that side art is superb. Open the door and take some pictures of the insides. Does it have a game printed circuit board? As the cabinet was kinda cheap, my bet is that the PCB might have been kept by the seller. Pictures of the insides will surely help us help you.

Yep. Take the door off the back and snap some pics of the inside electronics and wiring. That'll help us help you.

If anyone needs / Wants more pictures, let me know and i'll take some

Sorry some of them are sideways...

Well I'm glad you posted photos, because now we can tell you that that is not even the right cabinet shape for Donkey Kong!

Open the board cage and try to read what it says on the boards. You might have 2 games in there. I remember a 2-board cage set up like that being in Punch Out, but that was because it had two screens. I find it odd they'd keep a 2 board format in a 1 screen cabinet and game...

Almost all of Nintendo's games of that era are two board design. DK (also in a four board), DKjr, DK3, Popeye, and Mario Brothers were two board.

Unless of course you're referring to the two edge connectors then, yeah, that is strange...

Hey all, I'm getting ready to head to Tallahassee for business for the next week. I won't be able to post anymore pictures, but here is a quick one of the board. It looks like it is one min board in the middle, and two smaller boards on the outsides.

I'll take the boards out when I get back and take some better pictures.

Thanks again for the help

It loos like the upper right connector isn't plugged in correctly.  Could it be that easy?

Yeah, first carefully remove those two connectors on the cage door and clean the contact pins, they look rusty or dirty, then replace the connectors making sure they are seated all the way down on the pins.

The good news is that it looks like you have a complete cab, no missing parts. Nice.

What kind of power distribution center is in the bottom of the cab. Pics??

Your side art looks decent, but if you want to replace it, it looks like Rich from This Old Game is going to be reproducing it if he gets enough interest.

Sounds good. When I get home friday night, Ill give that a try. Also, is there any wiring diagram for the CP. Mine came with a full cp and and wire, but it wasn't wired up. So I don't know where each wire goes....

I was going to say the same thing... that top connector has come loose.  Wouldn't that kick ass if that was the only problem?!

It even has the stock Nintendo PS... nice.

So did re-connecting the connector work?  Just curious.

Also, you can find the wiring diagram here to reconnect the control panel:  http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/ARCADE/K-R/R-Type%20(Upright)(Nintendo)%20%5BOperation%5D%20%5BEnglish%5D.pdf

Awesome thanks for the link. I opened it back up, cleaned the contacts, and I still get nothing. I traced the wires and the red button on the front of the cab (I didn't put it there) is set as the 1p side coin button. I'll hook the panel back up, but am not sure where to start with this. Would it help if I pull the board completely out and take some pictures of it?

Yes, gently.

You could have burnt components, or broken traces...  a picture could help in identifying bad parts.

ok. I will work on this. I am honestly deathly afraid of touching anything inside this cabinet as I don't want to shock myself. Is there anything I should do before removing the board?
Obviously i will unplug it lol

The monitor is what could shock you.  the boards and controls, not so much.  Just unplug the machine first, and you'll be fine.

Before getting the board out, first push that connector back in place and power up.
