NES PowerPak Cart review? All NES game on 1 cart
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:46:28 am »
Anybody here has the NES PowerPak Cart and can let me know if it works or not? http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=34 I went ahead and bought one last night. For the PowerPak, CF Card and usb cable to link to PC was $162 It's a bit much but if it works well I feel it's worth it. All nes game plus homebrews on one cart! Just wanted to know if anyone has one to tell me about it.

It doesn't support all the games yet, but it supports the majority of them.  I have one and like it.  Supports some FDS games as well which is pretty cool.

I mentioned this device in another thread. I'm willing to pay the $150.00 or so to be able to play the majority of the NES games out there on the real console, as I feel (and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this) that emulation just doesn't quite have the same feel that the real console has. They also have one for the SNES, but it's unable to simulate a few of the add on chips (Mega Man X2 and X3 won't work, amongst others). I'm hoping that they still have them in stock once I get the cash together to buy one, as all the reviews I've read on the device seem to be overwhelmingly positive, minor quirks aside (the save states on the NES cart come to mind). Now, if they could only make one for the Genesis/32x, and the N64 to combat those god-awful overseas products they have out there...

Yeah, but it's only for one game at a time, and you need another flash cart from my understanding. Plus, the directions/website aren't too clear on what it supports, and how to obtain the software. Seems really sketchy, you know? It's the same thing for the Genesis, and probably from the same overseas company, so I'm not too excited to obtain one of those. Now, if this guy could use the same FPGA technology to create the Genesis and N64 carts, and utilize the CF cards to store the ROMs, then I'd be sold for a price around 150-200.

I got it in today along with my NES I got on eBay. BUT nes is all F**KED up and it was sold as is. Dude said it was blinking and needed a 72 pin so I was cool with that. Open it up to spider webs and it is piss yellow. I still didnt care as long as it works cause I can clean it up. But cleaning it up and putting new 72 pin didn't fix. Still blinks and when it trys to start the game it keeps resetting the game and picture is jacked up. I leave him a nice NEG feedback.

Is there a GAME compatibility list?  I see that there's a MAPPER compatibility list but I really don't want to do all the research that is involved with what game uses what mapper...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Basically, almost everything except Castlevania III.  Everything else you want to play will probably play.

The US version of Punch Out!! isn't fully supported yet, either. The good thing about the cart, though, is that the mapper compatibility list can be updated later on without having to send your cart in.

Are you sure about that?  Has a green mark on the mapper compatibility list.  Pretty sure I've played it just fine and believe my mappers are up to date.

Why do you think it isn't fully supported?

From my understanding, mapper 2 isn't MMC2. Take a look at this page, about half way down it shows the mapper list and the most used mappers, and their corresponding MMC numbers. From what I've read MTPO has some minor graphical issues. Then again, I don't own the cart (yet), so if you're playing fine then maybe it's already been fixed. :)

EDIT: I just looked at the most recent list from RetroUSB and the mapper 9 is supported. My mistake, punch away!

Do you have the toploaded NES or the frontloaded (PAL) NES?

Then you could try and take the cover off.
Put a game in, press it down and power on the console.
Now try adjusting the springed screws that hold the black plastic part (that holds your game cart) in place. Sometimes the screws are to tight and need to be loosened before the game works.

I have noticed that new 72 pin consoles might blink when the game is inserted in the proper way (in and then down) but work perfectly if the games are left up. Just put a game in and turn the console on to test. If the 72 pin thingie is brand new and works with the game in the up possition, try taking out the 72 pin thingie, put a game in it and the wiggle the game from side to side to "bend" the pins a bit. Reassemble and try it again.

Hope you get it working.

That is true.  I have done dozens of swaps.  They tend to work better when first installed if you don't push the game down.  That lessens as the connector breaks in but they are never 100% either way.

Lot of damn work to play Mike Tyson's Punchout, Chad.

For a while an NES with a new connector sold for $40 on ebay but they were selling for $10 at yard sales.

I've build a 2NES&2SNES to 1USB interface for my cab. It allows me to use original controllers (and 3part with slowmotion & turbo buttons etc.) to play NES and SNES emulators on my cab. I think that the original controllers make all diffrence in the feeling of the game play.. It was sooo worth the effort.  ;D

I just ordered an SNES console and the SNES cart. Can't wait to get it. I never really liked console on the Arcade machine. It's sort of like, I never liked street fighter on a console, yet I'd play it for hours at an arcade. Hated pacman on console, hours at the arcade... repeat for all arcade games save Mario.

I'm returning my cabinet to strictly arcade only. Mame, Daphne, Naomi, Neo-Geo. I'm going to leave console games on their consoles. I'm glad for this post because I knew nothing about these powerpaks. They are going to take care of NES and SNES :)

It's because it uses the SuperFX 2 chip, which isn't supported on the cart (and from my understanding of what the creator is saying, it never will be). He has a compatibility list on his website, listing all the games that aren't supported due to specialized chipsets in the carts.

Super Mario World 2 works on mine. The software that came on cart is old version. Update it and it should play. I had to do that

Even their own compatibility site indicates Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island) is not compatible as it needs the FX chip which this multicart does not have. Are you sure A) you are not thinking of a different game and/or B) it may have loaded, but did you try playing it?  Maybe it doesn't use the FX tech at the beginning?
