I've been hacking the switches in my buttons & joysticks lately, so let's play a good 8-way joystick game to give my joystick a thorough workout!   :)  Bump 'n' Jump is a nice, simple, cute game that's deceptively difficult.  Learn the other cars.  Learn the tracks.  I remember playing this a lot at Major Magic's (like Showbiz Pizza), & I later had a Bump 'n' Jump cassette for my DECO cocktail machine--booooy, those tapes took forever to load...

Bump 'n' Jump
Romset bnj
Lives: 3
Bonus Life: Every 30,000
Difficult: Easy [Twin Galaxies uses hard, but I think it's hard enough as-is, & easy seems to be the default]

Special Rules: None.

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Sunday January 17st (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.  (Let's give this a couple of extra days to account for the holidays still going on & so that we don't have people competing on a Friday or Saturday night--I don't want to be responsible for diminishing people's social lives!)

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

Good luck!

Thanks,
-Jason

PS--my unofficial first score: 40,100.

Thanks for picking another classic! I really like this one, although I'm not that great at it. Can probably clear 4 or 5 boards. I actually have access to a real machine (at a nearby video store), but I have no idea what difficulty they have it set at (I think the free man setting is every 30K)

Yah, after the sparse turnout for the Mappy contest (because holidays made for too much of a distraction, not because Mappy was a bad choice), I didn't want to continue crippling our contest momentum by selecting one of my obscure oddball favorites...

...I'll save an oddball one for the next time I win!   >:D

for some reason mame sees it as 4-way
and I can't find that rom in the controls ini to fix it?
Anybody else have this problem?

EDIT: "Bump n' Run" is a clone of "Burin' Rubber" and it was listed as 4-way for some reason in my controls.ini file
I fixed it and now all is good!
I still stink at this game even with the right controls
but it is fun to play around with

Absolutely not! Only few members are allowed to do that so they can keep on winning like JasonBar, CrazyKongFan and DrFrag, the rest of us just lucked out at first attempt!

We should start doing this kinda competition for newer games like console ports or something.  So then we can do stuff like Outrun 2 or Time Crisis or something. :P

Wouldn't be much of a competition if we all just saved our best scores and didn't post until the last day, would it? :lol

I'm starting to like this game, when I'm not getting frustrated by it.    I hadn't heard of it before this competition.  It's getting hard though.  It's not enough to get good at the controls, you have to start memorising the levels so you know what speed to hit the trickier jumps.

I've never heard of this one either...it's pretty fun!

I suck horribly at it, but I'm pretty out of practice on arcade games in general.  I hope to get back some of my old skills when my cab is done. ;)

So, the game with "Bump" in the name rewards you heavily for *not* bumping.

What's really frustrating is when you get to the end of the level without bumping a single car, then land on one on that narrow roadway just before the end...I've had that happen several times. You end up getting about 1000 points for the entire level.

OK, I guess that makes slightly more sense.  But blowing up the other cars is the whole purpose of bumping them, isn't it?

Anyway, I'll never match the scores here, but I'm going to play more anyway.  I love discovering new old games. :)

LOL...I haven't had much time to play, so my scores will probably never get that high.  Having decent controls would help, too; best I've got is an old-school Gravis Pro (classic).  It was a ---smurfette--- to get working in Win7 since M$ decided to drop gameport support with Vista for some reason.  Luckily an enterprising fellow released a little package that solves that.  My Shadowblade with a PlayStation2-to-USB adapter is detected, but the stick won't work with MAME for some reason. ??? It works fine on Ubuntu.  Man, do I hate Windows.

Anyway...so yeah, my hi-score so far is like 13k.  :laugh2:

Say, if anyone is out there tonight...had a question on this game.

People are talking about making it through a level without running other cars off the road.  Can someone give me a tip on how this is even possible?  Every time I've tried this, it seems that cars will hit the wall and give me points even if I haven't touched them.  If that counts as a car wrecked (which I honestly haven't quite determined yet), how can one possibly finish a level flawlessly when the cars basically smash themselves?

This is a really hard game to do on one credit; it really does require memorization of the levels.  That long gap that requires a double-jump in the second level snuck up on me the first time.

By the way, thanks to Ginsu Victim (is he still hanging around the comps?) for starting the trend of linking to the previous comp threads, and to the rest of you for continuing it!  I've spent the last few days reading through the old competitions from #1, and it's very entertaining!  I only signed up for BYOAC about a month ago now (lurked a lot a couple of years ago), and spent most of my time in the project forum until recently, so I hadn't seen the comps before; now I'm addicted!  Lots of cool games I've never heard of.  It's making me realize how much I suck, but it's still fun. ;)

If you don't touch any other cars for a whole stage, you'll get the 50,000 bonus for sure.  They can crash on their own and you're okay (like if they run into a pile of dirt), and as long as you don't see the points value show above their explosion you'll be fine.  Landing on cars is bad.

Make heavy use of the jump button.  Especially at the start of the first stage, where that annoying white car and the blue ones home in on you.

keep an eye out on the left alot of the jump have a road to the left
if the road if full width you can also jump off the screen and land on the other
side of the screen but only when the screen is widest
i spend more time in the air than on the road :)

I can't even get close to the score must have been a fluke only make 150,000 lately

I see.  It's really hard to get through without touching any cars.  Also, I've seen points added for cars I haven't touched (as far as I know), so I'm not sure what's up with that.  I could be wrong.

Make heavy use of the jump button.  Especially at the start of the first stage, where that annoying white car and the blue ones home in on you.

Ya, figured that out. :)  Nice that you can jump over "wall" sections, especially when they're narrow and curvy (the rocky parts).

keep an eye out on the left alot of the jump have a road to the left
if the road if full width you can also jump off the screen and land on the other
side of the screen but only when the screen is widest

That's interesting; I hadn't noticed that.  I can't think of a practical use for it at the moment, but it's good to know, thanks.

i spend more time in the air than on the road :)

The only problem I get with that strategy is that if you're in the air when a jump is coming up, you're screwed.  Goes back to the importance of memorizing the tracks.

Despite me being horrible at it, it's a fun game.  I'll have another go or twelve after dinner, I think.

Yep, I've been doing that.  Particularly those narrow roads where they drive under you.  (I'm not really that angry, I just wanted a chance to use that smiley)

Comtek-

Congrats on your win!

Thank you for your consideration in asking for our opinions on the next game, but the choice is all yours--go for it--pick whichever one makes you happy!

Thanks,
-Jason

OK, I'll set it up...actually, I had the post just about done for Berzerk, but I haven't posted it yet, so a couple of quicky changes and I'll have it for Popeye. Will set it up for default, which should match TG's settings, if anyone is interested in submitting to them (you'll have to use Wolfmame 106 if you do)
