MORTAL KOMBAT Mame (coin lights finally hooked up)
« on: December 27, 2009, 01:47:47 am »

I just joined this site and its great... Not really new to arcades so I don't know how I went this long without being a member here.
Hope you like my posts. Btw this was my third and most recent mame project. Each cabinet I built the quality improved drastically. I always was into Mortal Kombat, but when I saw yourmameman now know as yourmkarcadesoure on youtube video of the building of a mk3 cabinet I had to do it as well.

I wanted to get the videos out of the way.. they have been on youtube for a while anyway lol. The computer is this  Dell OptiPlex GX280 Desktop PC - Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 512MB DDR2, 40GB HDD, CD-ROM, Windows XP Pro (Off-Lease) $149.99 from tiger direct, I upgraded the ram to 1gig. I have the UI32 0.130 version of mame from march 2009. I used maximus arcade for the frontend, and movie previews from emumovies.com but the monitor was turning on and off evertime I would go into a game on maximus.. and I definitely don't want it burning out so I just use plain mame for now. I have a mk1 dedicated cabinet which I got all my measurements from so the mk3 cab I built is spot on except the front panel, and the width is one inch wider then a dedicated midway so it would be easier to install the monitor.

I INSTALLED A NEW CAP KIT AND FLYBACK IN THE MK1 WHICH SLOVED THE PROBLEM this is a old video.

I am still amazed at how detailed this cabinet came out. I saw this cabinet in person and I must admit it looked identical to a legit cab! Congrats Pete on a job well done!  :applaud:

Looks great and I really like the Mini MKII cabinet there.  Any more pics or progress on it?  Your HAPP joysticks also look to be mounted a bit low but I see why because you didn't route a recess from underneath like this.

Again I am real picky when it comes to joystick height but everything else looks great!

@SNAAKE  Thanks bro.   :laugh2:

@mwong168 You hit the nail on the head about me not routing the underside for the joysticks. The joysticks do sit a little low but they work perfect and are super responsive.. I pull off fatalities on Mortal Kombat games FLAWLESSLY. On the mini cabs I routed for the base of the joysticks like you did in your pic. I have everything except the computers, and artwork which I just loaded onto the usb memory stick so that should be printed by the weekend and there should be some update pictures worth showing.  I had bad luck twice, and was shipped broken computers on 2 occasions... So now I just have to figure out if I want to buy the components and build it myself, or buy a refurb PC.

The only advantage I can see of not routing the panel is that you can use a wood screw from underneath to secure and mount the plate to since there would be anywhere from 5/8" to 3/4" depending on the thickness of wood you used for your panel.  Once you route it out like mine you have to drill four holes and secure with some carriage bolts and nuts from underneath.  However in my last bartop and two wireless HAPP controllers I had I used 2-3 pieces of scrap wood as strapping so that I didn't have to bolt in from the top.  I wish I had done this with my showcase pedestal but too late now.  I guess you learn from every project you get into.  Fortunately for my brother in-law who has yet to start his cabinet will have it done exactly how I would have done mine from scratch.

Is that the reason why you didn't route your full size MK cabinet because you didn't want to use bolts going in from the top?

Mwong168 to be honest with you I copied everything from my original Mk1 cabinet, (except the front panel) and the joysticks were countersunk into the cp on the factory cabinet(see pics below). What do you mean by strapping with the scrap wood?  :dunno post a pic if you have one please.

Here is a pic from my latest two wireless HAPP/iL fight stick builds.  (check my sig for other pics).

I had to use a third piece to stop it from shifting left and right because my brother in-law routed a little bit too much but if you have a right fit the two long ones should suffice.

Thanks, it ain't pretty but it beats having to drill four holes and feed carriage bolts from the top.  Besides can only been seen from the inside and doesn't affect the way the stick plays or looks and also keep things looking clean without obstructing your control panel artwork too.

Not acceptable for trackballs either Pete     ;D

I used some pipe strapping used to support and hold them in place.  You can sort of see it here in the picture and pretty cheap and useful to securing other things down too like computer power supplies, hard drives, cd/dvd roms, etc...

Here is some inspiration  ;)  I wish I didn't use bolts to secure my iL sticks but I guess in a way having bolts there sort of adds to the authenticity.

Mwong168, I thank you for the two great idea's of holding down the joysticks from the bottom, and the pipe straps to hold down other components. I couldn't figure out what the pipe straps were called until you told me.  :notworthy: thanks brother.

Speaking on MORTAL KOMBAT, I happened to catch an episode of MTV cribs and saw that Chuck Liddell has a MK cabinet.  It must be some sort of multi PCB one or a bastardized cab cause the side art has Johnny Cage from MK cabinet but he is running MKII on it.

Also, glad to be able to help or give you some more creative ways to help your cabs  ;)

It was simply MK2 in what looked like a MINT MK1 cabinet. Here is a link...

Question about your PC specs... does it have problems running 3d games (Street Fighter 3, etc)?  Also, what size monitor was that?  And is it a TV monitor, computer monitor?

Pc specs are dell optiplex 2.8ghz, 1 gig of ram, 40 gig hard drive. monitor is a wells gardner d-9800 from x-gaming.com
It runs most games perfect some of the crazier games will lag from time to time but not where it affects game play.
