Very nice work!  GTX a bit overkill or required for pinball emulators?  What are you running, VP or Future Pinball?

I have never really been a fan of pinball but this is cool. :applaud:   But I might just have to build something like this (the wife loves pinball) one day.

Isn't there any options in those virtual pinball programs so that you could pre-render a lot of stuff? What are the absolute minimum requirements if you turn everything down/off and with a table resolution of 800x480? Any chance of running that on a dual-core Atom with GMA950, or at the most, 9400M?

Hi Yvan,

well the first problem i see already is the resolution the newer tables wont look as good with that low resolution i already tryed on my mame cab before building the mini pin cab
i dont recomend internal vga cards like the ones you described minimum for running every will ly in the 7600 geforce range better the 9800 even
visual pinball does not run well with ati cards

The thing is, I'm planning on doing a micro pinball table, with the playing field at around 7-8" widescreen, probably 800x480. At that size, I can only use a mini-ITX motherboard and can't use any external graphic card. The best video option available AFAIK in integrated graphics is the nVidia 9400M.

Ivan, I'd be curious to see what kind of performance you get out of that integrated graphics chipset.

I have an Asus m3n78-vm mobo running a phenom x2 black and it just flat won't run Future pinball worth a damn.

Mame works just fine, but I know FP relies on the 3d functions of the graphics card. I was QUITE upset by that. Fortunately, I can always stick a card with more horsepower in, but I thought surely that'd be enough to handle FP, but not so, at least as far as I can tell.

I'm guessing/hoping that it depends a lot on the resolution of your play field. If you're trying to run FP at 1920x1080, it probably requires 5.4 times as much GPU power as 800x480. The 9400M could probably be more than enough with all settings and options turned either way down or completely off.

Yeah, good point. I was wanting to run it with full effects at 1920x1200 24"dell.

But I'll complain anyway  ;)

Hi,
I have a dual core Atom mobo with GMA950(d45gclf2).Visual pinball 8.1 works fairly well with it.Older tables runs flawlessly, but new tables can be a problem. When there is only one ball on the playfield, there is no problem, but at multiball it starts to lag. Visual pinball 9.04 will NOT run on this board only in sw mode (no hw rendering).
I suggest you to get one of those ion boards (with integrated 9400M).I'm not sure how it will handle hw rendering tough.Only VP9 uses hw rendering, the older VP8 uses sw rendering, so cpu power is a must to run every table.
I now have a geforce 9500 card with intel 6300 Dualcore on Asus P5QPL-AM(micro atx mobo) in my cab, and VP9 works perfectly with all tables, it can be a 4 ball multiball - no problem.
Future pinball didn't run on the d45gclf2 at all - needs hw rendering. With my new config FP runs perfectly.

If it's not any trouble, would it be possible to test your D45GCLF2 again with a resolution of 800x480, with VP8?

Sure, just tell me which tables. I have a small 7" wide tft to test the setup.I can test it at 800x600...maybe smaller res is also possible with custom res settings.

Cute  :)

Two things. I don't know much about pinball emulators. Do they have a 'tilt' function? And if so, have you incorporated that? Also, how are you going to finish off that gap at the front?

yes you can add a nudge function to some buttons but with the uhid-g from ultimarc you can slam the cabinet and the chip will respond as a nudge in the software very cool

also the gap in the front is being worked on by a friend it will house in the near future a custom made lockdown bar :)

This is an impressive build.  It inspires me to build one and gives me pictures for my powerpoint presentation I'll need to sell it to my wife!

Question though, what took longer, the build or the software setup?

Ok so i got the nudging to work with the mercury switches.
it's really hard to get it going , adjusting is not easy with those things

i now have them mounted the same way facing but one higher adjusted
it works but if anyone has more tips for me please go ahead.

also some vp tables seem to react faster and tilt out fast any way to adjust or where to look into the script?

Well more cute things will be added:

I got my Led-Wiz and two clear topper lights for the cabinet in the house. !

Thanks to chrizz99 and manowar we are soon getting kick ass light control software to use with our pin-cabs.

Kudos to them , but i wanted to update my own build thread here this week with installation pictures etc.

Hi. Im thinking of building one of these and hope to make as "life like" as possible. With real pinball machines there is a sort of proper resistance (a heaviness if you will) when you press the flipper buttons. Is this something that can be replicated as im guessing on most builds just standard "arcade" happ buttons are used which in my opinion wouldnt feel right?

I love the look and really contemplating making one of these if i can make it as "real life" as possible!

Well if you look into chrizz99's topic of his pinball , he installed siemens relais which simulate flipper force feedback.
He also has a youtube video up.

Check it out ! you will be building one very soon

Mine cost me about $1400 (3 screens), but i got the 45" playfied for $30, so mine does not count.

i would say it would be in the $2500-3500 range depending on what you do.

Little update:
I ordered 2x rgb led drives for the top flashers, they will not be as bright as the cree lights because they where designed for push button illum. but they will do because i am really close up them.

Also ordered 2x electric ice buttons with rgb drives and leaf switches for my cabinet.

thanks to chris77 for all his patience with my 100 questions

Hi,

So i installed one top flasher with an RGB drive from GGG.
It's not as bright as those high power leds that chris77 uses, but for my mini pin they will do.

Here is a simple reaaaly simple wiring diag for one rgb led and the ledwiz:

the rbg drive from ggg comes equiped with a 4wire cable attached to the driver itself:

split the wires carefully

run the 3 grey wires to 3 different ports on the wiz
run the grey/red wire to the 5v output

for more led 5v power use a terminal strip and piggy bank the connections

I love the mini-pin idea, especially since my Wife has a 19" 4:3 LCD monitor that's gathering dust, and I can pick up a nice 24" LCD for under $200.  I think my skills with MDF should be adequate to build a couple of boxes (hopefully) and I'll definitely be referencing your build when I do mine!

Installed Leaf switches for the flipper button left one works perfect , the right one sometime fails to respond.

How can i adjust these easily?

Being a big fan of VP and Pinmame I have a couple questions for you:

1) How did you get the split screens to work
2) What are you using to get the menu to select the tables you want to play?

Thanx,
Geo

OK.  So after several edits I think I understand that last question.   :-[  (It's just been one of those days).  When I was playing with hyperpin the left and right flippers scrolled through the tables and the plunger selected them.

I love these mini pin builds!  Gratz man.... that looks great!

I didn't even know you could get anything like mercury switches. So does the nudge feature work OK now? I would think that maybe when you nudge left or right won't both of the mercury switches activate? Are they just wired into standard button positions on the Ipac? I think you can have a nudge front/up button too yes?

Read this build thread from mwong, it explains the setup of FS tables.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=102628.0

Yes the menu switching works with the flipper buttons you can configure it through the settings file

For the split screen: those are FS tables meaning the table will be on your main monitor and the backbox wil be loaded with UVP if you choose it,  on the second screen.

The mercury switches are wired to the IPAC so it's just a button press.
But to be honest it's really hard to get them to work right... you get double nudges all the time.

So when i finish the led project i am going to look into the UHID-G from ultimarc should be better i hope.

That's what I'm seeing from using the mercury switches, too.

With a minipin, I'd imagine it being even worse because of the pin's smaller size...

I'm kinda wishing I just gone with the UHID-G in the first place<sigh>

Wow!  Thanx for the info.  This is really cool!  I never knew you could split Visual Pinball across several monitors like that.

So the big question I have for you now is this:

How does it compare to playing a real pinball machine?

Nevertheless, the concept is great especially for those short on space...here you can play several machines in one cabinet much like with Mame and video games.

Thanx,

Geo

It's not the same as a real machine, but with the upcoming led-wiz project we are one step closer. but i play it everyday, and it's a lot cheaper then buying a real machine if you are into mame you will like this also :)

One thing that would make a pinball emulator machine like this more fun is to have a way to use 3D glasses of som kind :D

Also a really nice build keep it up.  ;D

Thanks, but i don't think 3d will work that well at all.

Your are looking on the screen from the top... if you wear 3d glasses you must wear them straight before your eyes... no room left..
Otherwise the 3d effect would be gone and you could not see the ball anymore.. garbled screen.

If you wear sunglasses you always have some space between the glass and your eyes.. and since your not looking straight forward it will cause issues

I actually drilled holes for an atx layout into the side of my cab and screwed motherboard standoffs into the holes, but it was regrettably unforgiving... and I have no place to secure my video card, so it just hangs out there (hope it doesn't fall out!).

A video card just won't fall out suddenly the slot grabs it nicely and you are not hanging any weight on it
But as they say you can never be to sure about mounting things vertical :)

And yes my video card is not screwed down and i have no issues with being the otherside my motherboard is mounted horizontly

So i finally have some upcoming vacation and it's time to finish here :)

Ordered:

2x Clear flasher dome
4x RGB Leds

Project:
Re-Wire complete cabinet --> I will use UTP Network cable to cable all the flashers etc to have one wire per two flashers going to the ledwiz

Add 2 more flashers on top of the cabinet backbox to complete a 5 flasher setup

Add 2 RGB Flipper buttons :)

This should keep me going for a while , will post pics when i get all the stuff inhouse

Alright here a few pics showing the mess i made of the inside :

I removed the LCD from the backbox because at first i did not attach the speakers to anything so when moving the cabinet one speaker fell down early when i first build it.

So this time i had some sticky foam i used to secure the speakers to the sides:

Et viola:

Here are some shots of the backbox and cable ties !

My Goal is to have an easier to deteach backbox:
I now only have to screw lose the cables that run trought the terminal strip to the flashers and strobes, before i had the wires run all the way inside the cabinet.

Cable ties:

More Wiring today :

It may not look pretty but you will never see the backside of it and the functionality is good, i can now easely disconnect the backbox from the main cabinet and the inerts of the cabinet is cleaner.

PS. the black wires for the speakers and monitor are normally inside the cabinet !

Terminal strip with piggy banking:

Thanks for your kind words martijn , since your kinda of a legend here lol   :applaud:

Yes but i know the wires are ugly to see but then again the unit stand against the wall and i decided that for this mini pin moveablity would be the main reason to run the wires on the back like that.

It was also a design mistake from the beginning of the project to desing the backbox like that.

But you are right for the future when i start buillding a bigger one no more wires on the back !

Lol thanks , your pin rocks anyway  :)

And we share 1 thing.. space  ;D

I went ultra slim to be able to have a cab and not giving up so much space.

p.s. consider a 2.1 setup, it will be worth it if you can afford and have the space in it

Yeah a 2.1 setup would be awesome but i don't now where to mount the sub woofer.
I can screw it on the underside but that would make the cabinet look like something with a lumb :)

might be a pain, but could you rewire those into ethernet ports on the back? then connect with a cat5 wire? Its still a mega awesome machine, Im uber jealous  :afro:

Might be a good idea :)

but as explained it's a mega design flaw of the backbox that the cables must be run over the back

at this point moveabilty is more important for me then neatness, the backbox will be against a wall so you will never see the cable mess

for my next project i will do it a lot more clearer

but thanks for your tip

So let's continue ...

i started the cab late 2009 when there was no ledwiz software there.
Afterwards when all software was released i started building all my toys.

this concluded in running lots of wires on the backside of the cab to the top... now it's time for a change

behold:  zeb's lightbar and resistor card.

zeb is a cool guy to work with , answered lot's of my questions and even refunded money when the shipping was cheaper then he expected cool guy , you don't see this very often anymore.

you can view his products here: http://www.zebsboards.com/

When all has arrived i will update with more pics
