Out of Double Dragon and Gyruss, Gyruss seems to be the more popular so we're going with that one.  And we're not playing Act-Fancer Cybernetick Hyper Weapon, even if the idea gives me a moment of evil glee.  >:D

I first played Gyruss on my friend's C64 back in the 80s.  It was a pretty faithful reproduction iirc, although I always thought the game was called "Gyruss Loader".  :D I later played the arcade version and did pretty well (by my standards).  I don't think I ever actually reached Earth though.  Looking through my inp files, the best I did was 1 warp to Earth (stage 22).  Wow, that's not so bad after all.  Apparently Earth is the last planet.  Anyway, I won't be eligible to win this competition.

We'll be playing the Konami version.  The romset is called gyruss.

Rules:

ROMSet: gyruss
Lives: 3
Difficulty: 5 (Average)
Bonus Life 30k 90k 60k+
These should all be default.  They are on my setup anyway.

Special Rules: None.

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Saturday, December 19th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Good luck!

Awesome game choice DrFrag. I'm gonna have Tocatta and Fugue stuck in my head for a week now.

142,350 to get us started.

My biggest problem with this game is getting 80-90k on the first ship then losing the next 2 or 3 within the next 5k.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

D'oh! My first try, I thought I got 1st place, but got as close to it without getting it...142,300...50 points behind!
BTW: what happened to having all the previous comp's hyperlinked in the first post of the thread? That was a handy feature.

I don't see why not. Unless Epyx broke the rule, after all he won a competition and then picked a game that he won 2nd time in a row. Unless you're that above mentioned marp player.

I think it's a bad idea to allow people to win a game they've picked.  What if I picked a string of games where I can beat the world records?  I don't think that would be in the spirit of things.  Fwiw, I'm not a MARP player.  I'm a cab builder.

I kicked ass on this game back in the C64 days.  ;D
... After trying it out again I find I need to re-learn all the paterns again.   :banghead:

Another favorite. I haven't played any games on my cab since I hurt my wrist during the Galaga competition. Might be time to give it a try again.

197,400

I had 194,000 with two ships left then I was stupid enough to say out loud "I think I'm going to make it to 200k."   :banghead:  :hissy:

Managed to move all the crap out of the way so I could plug me mame cab in and managed to get this score 346, 400 not bad as I haven't played it since I had a classic arcade game competition with my students in July.

Made a tit of it towards the end as the dog was nagging me to take him out for a walk (not as bad as Steve Weibe tho ;D)

Cheers Eric

171,450 was the best one I could muster so far.

I haven't really played this game seriously before, but I'm really likin' it. Once you memorize the patterns, the game gets a lot easier.
And the music when you perfect a Challenge level is so rewarding. :D

I'm thinkin' an octo-gate, or round-gate would work really well with this game.

How come some people have info about what stage has been achieved and some don't?

I think it's just that when you take the screenshot immediately after getting the score the stage info is still on screen, if you play another game and then come back to the HS table, it ain't there.

Mine says stage 1 cause I got me camera out but the battery was dead, by the time I'd plugged it in the table had gone so I started a new game and let it get killed.

Looks like it's all over, with Hurray Banana coming first on 346,400, and vorghagen second on 197,400.

Congrats Hurray Banana!  Pick a new game for us.  :applaud:

Let's go with Mappy

Never much good at it, but still love the abstract idea of moving round an house on trampolines.

Romset Mappy (US)
Difficulty Rank A
Bonus like 20k & 70K only
Lives 3
