this is so awesome...i really want to build one of these now.  i use a modded xbox for console emulators right now, but i'd love to be able to use snes controllers...i really have to build one of these.

Mostly just blocking them right out. I know my system has its limitations with a 16gb HD, so I am just not attempting to make all the ports available. I will just be running cables to the open spots on the existing SNES back panel. My mobo, which uses an external power brick, will just be attached in place of the SNES DC input. I'm gonna be cabling out the HDMI to the old A/V socket as well.

I haven't decided if I want any USB ports mounted, since I am thinking that I can just have the wireless receivers for the player 3 and 4 gamepads connected internally. I already have a wireless mouse receiver inside, and that is working pretty slick.

I am thinking I might also wire the audio input to the back of the SNES in case in case I run into any "video only" HDMI situations, and need to plug the audio in separately (like a to a computer monitor or TV with a unique home theater setup).

Thats a good idea to have audio out.

:laugh2:  :laugh2:  :laugh2: I think that it might have that kind of effect on people. I brought the machine over to a friend's house for play testing. He told me he wanted some "time alone" with the machine.

Let's just say I don't keep my video game goods out of my sight after that one incident where I lent my N64 controller with rumble pack to a friend, and got it back coated in a sticky substance. (true story)  :puke

Oh, you can't let this story go!  Did you confront your friend (hopefully, from a distance) in regards to the issue 'at hand'?

Yeah, I actually did confront him. He begrudgingly verified the substance, saying that the controller must have been "in the line of fire". He would not admit to using the rumble pack as a "gaming enhancement", and probably because the game I gave him was The legend of zelda: ocarina of time.  :scared

fyi - i still have that controller. I scrubbed and disinfected that thing. It really got sticky in the joystick area (no pun intended).

It was from that point dubbed "the jizztroller" and the loser always has to be the one to use it.

Gives new meaning to the words "immersive gameplay".

how does this system perform with console emulators?  i'm really considering doing this, but i'm just worried about the lack of horsepower with the atom processor...i'd like to think that it could handle emulating snes, nes, genesis, and turbografx, but i'd like to hear it from someone who is actually doing it.

how are you handling exiting back to your front end?

I have had no problem with the console emulation speed. I have not yet tried turbografx yet though, but I can get Neo Geo Running, so I don't see an issue. I do have some video tearing going on with my nes and snes emulators that I have not yet addressed, which can make things feel a little jagged on the side scrolling games. I am guessing as soon as I work on tweaking the emulator settings, I can buffer out the tearing, but I have not ever dealt with that kind of video issue before.

As far as exiting goes, I was originally planning on hacking a usb gamepad, and mounting function buttons on the case of the snes. I thought that would be too much work, so I just decided to use a spare controller to do the work. I now have 4 player support using wireless dual shock style controllers for player 3 and 4. Since there are extra buttons on the dual shock controllers, I am just using one of the shoulder buttons as an exit button. I am also using the other shoulder buttons as a quick save, quick load and fast forward. I don't know if I am gonna run into any 4 player games that need the shoulder buttons, but I will take a look at that issue only if it comes up.

I am waiting on a couple HDMI 90 degree adapters in the mail right now so I can finish with the HDMI video port, I can do some better benchmarking on performance after that is finished. I kinda want to try N64 games since I now have dual shock controllers, but am not holding my breath. There will be another update on the way as well.

Theres no way with whatever emulators you're running to map simultaneous button presses to exit or sth? You know like Start + Select exits.

I'm bet I could, I'm pretty sure xpadder could designate a button hold down or combination to equal the exit key.

I just decided to use a spare controller because I wanted to also have easy control of save states. I like to be able to pick up any game where I left off, so I figured it would be better to just have dedicated buttons for the 3 different tasks. Fast Forward is really nice in certain games as well, so I added it as well.

Howdy! I'm still here!

You could say I was busy admiring my handy work, but not in the way that you're thinking.    ;)

My son was just born, so I was not only taking off of work, but I decided to stay away from computers as well. Vigo Jr. has been getting my attention.

Update coming soon, I promise!

OK, Update time...

I have been motivated enough to post a couple videos of this system in action. While I have not finished with the frontend design work, I have put up an instructable in light of the the contest that Donkbaca posted in the main forum. It does include a couple things that I did not even post here. Feel free to check it out!

http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-a-Super-NES-into-an-All-In-One-Classic-Video-/

You need to have/make a free account in order to view all the pictures, but if you do, please feel free to rate my instructable. (Hint: I prefer the 5 star ratings the best  ;D)

Also, as part of my instructable, I have uploaded a couple videos. I am reposting them here:

This is a video showing the game capabilities. Bear in mind that my frontend still needs a lot of touch-up.

Here is a startup shot, just to give a picture of how quickly it can boot up using an SD card for a hard drive. I also need to set the frontend to boot in a shell, so I bet it could run even quicker when I am done.

(I know I sound like a frickin' mouthbreather in this video. Before you start picturing that I look like a caveman, bear in mind that my face was stuck 1 inch from the microphone, and I am fighting a cold.  ;))

Yay! Thanks Donkbaca!  :woot

I didn't even get the star rating thing at first. When I saw the stars at first, my mouse was hovered above the 1/2 star selection. So it said:

Star rating:
0.5 Worthless

I didn't understand that it was just there to describe the level of stars. I was feeling pretty bad for a minute there.  :lol

AFIAK IONITX-C-U has been discontinued although you can find refurb units on ebay. When soldering the controller to usb pad. Where did you get a wiring diagram for it?

Thanks for the info! Thats really too bad it's getting discontinued....its a good board.

As far as the wiring diagram goes, I didn't need one, It was really straightforward once I decased it. Each set of leads for each controller port just needed to be matched in exact order. There is a set of 4 leads, then followed by a set of three leads for each port. I just soldered a wire between each lead like below

decased USB adaptor
 ______
1----a
2----b
3----c
4----d
------
5----e

It looks like I did finally find a place that sells that zotac board new:

http://www.neworldit.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=IONITX-C-U

It is about more than $50 than I paid though....at that point, I recommend just getting the next model up on from zotac that has the DC power supply. The Ion itx a-u, I hear they go for much cheaper on manufacturer rebate every other month or so.
