19587 after first (and perhaps last) try. I don't think people gonna get too excited about this game as it is on every system imaginable, I've seen it even on some satellite boxes! I personally never liked Tetris, I'll ask my wife to play it, she likes it. ;)

heh, first I have been back since I started this.  It appears I picked a game nobody wants to play lol.  I hadn't played in it YEARS so i thought it may be good to bring back.  If noone wants to play it I will pick a different game on Saturday when I get back home.  Sorry guys.

Tetris is a great game. That's why it is on every platform, my favorite being on the Gameboy. Count me in. I'm sure others will warm up too.

Boy oh boy, this old Tetris is pretty unforgiving--the pieces are reeeeally sticky!  As soon as your piece touches the pile, it's stuck.  Most later versions of Tetris allow some slippin' 'n' slidin' for a moment after your piece touches the pile.  Harsh!

On my 2nd game, 74, 230.

Hey mimic, how did you manage a score of 19,587?

We're playing on medium difficulty, so you get 20,000 points just for hitting the start button, my friend!   ;D

Actually, the medium difficulty is the default internal difficulty setting (which can be changed by hitting F2 to access the service mode, and change the difficulty in there). It has nothing to do with the level you start at. In fact, you have the following listed in the rules: "You may freely choose your starting level" :)

After a solid hour of play the best I've managed is 68,539.
My God this game is frustrating. One small mistake and it's all downhill. I'll come back later after my blood pressure returns to normal.

I usually consider myself pretty good at Tetris but this version

I hate this version of Tetris!

Only being able to rotate the blocks counter-clockwise is so frustrating.  I find that when playing NES Tetris I usually rotate clockwise so the only way I could manage getting the 79,935 that I did was having MAME Mirror the screen and reversing the controls.  I might try again once I calm down but man, do I wish this were an NES Hi Score Comp rather than a MAME one...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Very first try on my desktop with a keyboard.  Debating whether it will be better to play on the MAME setup or on this setup.

I've always sucked at tetris so maybe this will be my chance to play the game for extensive periods of time.

I too yearn for a clockwise turn.

Played 11 games, and didn't score under 100K on any of them.  ;D

Best score: 169,340 (121 lines)

Most lines: 130 (120,961 points)

Zoiks!

Strategy questions:

1 - What starting level did you use?  I tend to use hard, because I'm not earning enough points by the time I hit the hard level (8?) when starting on easy or medium.

2 - Do you go for max combos (multiple lines finished simultaneously) or do you go for highest round bonus (by having the lowest remaining bricks) or do you stretch out each round to get the most points from dropping more blocks?

Thanks,
-Jason

I start on Hard, and play for speed.  I don't go for combos, round bonuses or stretching out each round.  Maybe I should.

I'll record an INP next time.  I think it gets a little easier after round 12, because there's no random blocks or advancing rows.

So, what you're saying is that you're blowing us all away & you're not even attempting to use any sort of strategy.

That qualifies you for official poopiehead status!   :P

Well, every time I attempt a strategy it gets me thinking too much and I make mistakes.  If I play without thinking then it's kind of automatic and I do better.

This is the Teris I grew up with.  I never really got the hang of versions where you could turn the blocks in both directions, or move them after they've landed.  I also play in monthly Tetrinet tournaments at my local LAN, so I keep in practice.

Here's a recording I just made of my play style using Mame32 v0.129.

Just got 177,878 with 142 lines.

I recorded an INP, but I'm not sure if it'll play back properly.  At round 16, the game starts using initials from the high score table as a pattern for blocks at the start of the round.  As the game appears to retain the high scores between sessions, playing it back on someone else's computer would give them a different layout for round 16.  :-\

Anyway, screenshot:

So, which initials are optimal, as far filling in the bottom of the screen goes?

I figure III would be a bad set of initials...  :]

I don't know if Tetris uses NVRAM, but if it does, if you don't delete it first before recording an INP, it won't playback properly. I've been using WolfMAME 106 (which disables NVRAM by default) so most games playback ok (Klax was one that wouldn't, you also needed to disable the sound emulation, and it *might* playback). Anyway, I don't know how you guys do it. I played about a half dozen games and every one of them, I couldn't clear the first wave where the lines advance up occasionally. All my scores were in the 70-75K range.

I hate puzzle games. Anyways, it does roll clockwise. Just not counter.

I'm really looking forward to the next comp.  Tetris is great and all, but this version of tetris makes baby Jesus cry. Not being to rotate both ways is like playing tetris with only your feet....actually wait, that might be fun...

Looks like I won.  ;D I can't accept the prize, as I'm in Australia.  Maybe save it for the next winner?  Or second place?

I'll start a new thread tomorrow.  I'm tossing up between Double Dragon and Gyrus.

I think I might have lucked out getting 100k that once. I kept getting stuck in the same 90ish range too.

Gyrus? Never heard of it... might have to investigate

It's actually Gyruss (2 S's :) ) One of my favorite games, although I'm not that great at it. (so you can tell which one I hope you pick ;D ) Has a great soundtrack (although it sounds awful on those 48-in-1 boards)
