46" / 30" / 19" widebody fullscreen visual pinball project
« on: November 21, 2009, 01:17:37 pm »

...check out my new pinball project!

Hey Guys!

I am planning to build a nearly "bezel-less" fullscreen visual pinball cabinet with a 46" lcd playfield, 30" lcd backbox and 19" lcd dmd-monitor. I will revive an empty star trek:tng widebody cabinet for this project which I got for a few bucks.

The following parts are already there:

- cabinet
---> empty star trek : tng widebody cabinet
---> new legs
---> new widebody lockbar
---> new "old" williams siderails
---> black painted coindoor (illuminated)
---> wired coin acceptors
---> pinball service buttons
---> new playfield and backbox glass
---> blank williams speakerpanel / grill

- screens
(if you need high-res backglass pics (2560res, 6mb each) for your cabinet check out my other thread at http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8860)
---> 46" Playfield 16:9 lcd sharp fullhd 1080p screen (sharp LC46D65)
---> 30" Backglass 16:9 lcd hdready 720p screen with DVI (noname tv brand, medion)
---> 19" Scoreboard 4:3 lcd screen (benq tft pc monitor)

- pc-setup
(check out our "How to get the best performance for your cab" thread at  http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8595)
---> win xp sp3 - 32bit
---> intel quad core i5-750 overclocked to 4x 4.0ghz
---> msi P55-GD65 mainboard
---> 2x2GB RAM DDR3 1600 (8-8-8 timing)
---> 2x GTX260 1792MB GPU (1x for playfield / 1x for backglass and dmd)
---> 32GB SSD (os booting / table loading / hyperpin browsing. just awesome!)
---> soundblaster x-fi music soundcard (creative crystalizer. great enhancement for pinball-sound)
---> 2.1 quality teufel soundsystem with huge subwoofer (provides a nice and clear force-feedback for bumpers, slingshots, replay knockers)
---> 550 watt 80+ arctic psu / 86% efficiency (pc power consumption is averagly about 350watt)

- additional details
---> 2 siemens 12V-DC industry relay (contactors) for flipper force-feedback (wow effect, check out my youtube-vid)
---> 2 original pinball tilt-bobs for nudge-left and nudge-right and 1 mercury-switch for front/top-nudging
---> original star trek tng plunger gun (sensitive ball shooting also possible)
---> all connected to an ipac/interfasd buttoninterface

---> 4x led-illuminated transparent pinball buttons with original leaf-switches (for the right feeling)
---> 6x led-illuminated servicebuttons with plotted inlays (countersinked)
---> 3x 22cm fans for cab ventilation / silent & powerfull 600rpm, 161.61mł/h (2x cabinet / 1x backbox)

======edit: project is almost finished===================

here is a first digital camera video of the machine. the quality isnt the best (switch to "hq" @ youtube for a better quality)

here is a  video of the virtual flipper sound and force feedback (industry relay +  2.1 subwoofer system) vs. a real medieval madness flipper.

I think the virtualmachine sounds better ;-)

fine adjusted my 2 tilt-bobs, works very well now. check out the smooth nudging... you can nudge left and right separately.

here is a youtube-vid for you:

I see the 46" screen and the 30" screen but where is the 19" screen?

More pics!!! Do you have any build pics?

I'm seriously thinking about building one but I thought everyone usually used a 42" screen for the play field. Why did you go with the 46"?

Very nice indeed  :afro:

The 19" screen is where the DMD is. I guess its just the top part of it showing.

I imagine he used a 46" as the playfield as it seem to fit his original Star Trek cabinet nicely.

Dot Matrix Display. Its the part below the larger screen that generally displays your score/animations etc. I think the dot matrix is 'emulated' on the LCD.

thanks guys for your kind words!

46" is the maximum-size which fits in my star trek : tng cabinet. there is no visible bezel, so it gives a more authentic / realistic feeling at all.

here are some pics of the build

What front end software are you using to select the Visual Pinball tables?

The last person indicating they made a pinball machine like this indicated they had to edit each Visual Pinball table individually to accomodate the screen size, etc...    Did you have to edit each table which is on your machine?

Could you list specific makes/models of these ?
The fit in that cabinet is incredible....... looks awesome.

Exactly! I've seen two screens and that's easy enough but three? Does the video cards support three out puts?

And lastly; are all pinball machines the same dimensions (or generally the same)?

This project is amazing! Can't wait for the details. Might be the next build this coming year!

Great job!

unclet, i use the hyperpin (pinball version of hyperSpin) frontend. there are also cabinet versions of visual pinball tables available (16:9 fullscreen). so it is not necessary to edit each table, just plug n play.

smalltownguy, its a north q cooler, looks similar to the zalman.

kevin, installed a sharp d65 46" 1080p lcd-tv, for backbox a noname 30" 720p tv and the 4:3 scoreboard monitor is a simple benq pc-monitor.

pinball wizard, the hyperpin-frontend displays the backglass automatically. visual pinball and pinmame displays playfield and dmd/scoreboard. you can drag the dmd simply via mouse to the dmd-monitor. you have to do this only once - the last position of the dmd will be saved.

ivwshane, you need 2 graphic-cards when you use 3 displays. there are widebody pinball cabinets and normal ones. widebodys are a bit wider.

Thanks for the info.

46" blows my budget but what's everyone's take (OP especially) if I went with: 40" lcd tv 1080p, 23" wide screen lcd, and a 15" lcd (for dmd)?

Damn you damn you damn you!

Every time I see something like this I go out and try to get all the various pinball emulators up and running only to end up banging my head against a wall.

I just can't seem to get my head wrapped around all the pieces that need to talk to each other and such.  Heck I even started a THREAD about trying to get it working.  This crap gives me a headache!

Off I go to try it all again though...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Why?

Let me answer this with a memorable quote from "The Rock":

Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and ---fudgesicle--- the prom queen.  :laugh2:

Or a bit more technical:

Because 46" fits perfectly in the widebody cabinet, where the 42" will leave a big bezel.

This is stunning! If I had the funds I'd love to build one... I have done for a while now... however, with the budget I could achieve it could only be about a 19" screen... and that would be the most dwarfed pinball table ever conceived - pointless!

Full marks for this though - fantastic work! :applaud:

Excellent job, might have to build one now myself, hopefully this LCD will come down in price after new year. Few questions. If I am not mistaking side rails are usually mounted on a self-stick tape in a real pinball machine. If for whatever reason you need to remove the LCD, would you need to remove the side rails as well? Or do you have some other provisions for that. And a second question is what happens with the DMD display when you are playing a game without a DMD such as an EM machine? Does it just stay black and score reels are displayed on the backglass?  And lastly is the full model number for the LCD is Sharp AQUOS LC-46D65U? Thanks.

reko, the siderails are simply attached with screws, so you can remove the lcd easily. the dmd-monitor displays all scores from all generations and the full modell number for the lcd is aquos lc-46d65e, i think they are similar.

here are some new pics, question: where is the virtual machine  ;)

with the budget I could achieve it could only be about a 19" screen... and that would be the most dwarfed pinball table ever conceived - pointless!

Actually, if you go check out the hyperpin boards, you'll see a bunch of examples of mini pins that are all pretty cool:

http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=38

I myself built a mini pin with a 22 inch playfield and it sits now right between my real life Twilight Zone and Pinball Magic:

I love it.  It is small, but still a very fun machine.

Chris,
Do you think any 46" LCD could be used? There are some good deals on Toshiba LCD, yours is obviously a perfect fit. I am thinking I should probably stick with the same model. What do you think?

Seconded.  What features/specs did you look for in choosing yours?

Very, very nice BTW.  Looks like a real pinball machine.  I'm very much inspired.

thanks for the good words guys  :)

i looked for good viewing angles and response time. so i found the sharp screens with its "advanced super view" (asv) lcd-panels. sharp did a very well job, i am absolutely satisfied.

if you choose another brand, look for a very small bezel, otherwise the screen won't fit in a standard widebody cabinet.

here are some mounting pics, there is no space left in the cabinet.

Chris,
Once you mounted siderails, is there a gap between the siderails and the side of the cab? Hard to tell from the pics. Thanks.

on the mounting-pictures siderails are loose, not yet attached with screws.
there is just a foam-strip (1mm) on the siderails to protect the screen sideways a little bit.

Chris-

I'd be interested to know what interface you used for the cabinet buttons? THat is- flippers, game select, etc- to interface with the computer.

Thanks!

where exactly are you from?
Being located near Karlsruhe (along with some other MAME folks) and seeing your Teufel Speakers in the background I needed to ask you this question.
Great pin you have built.

The plunger connects to the IO board...the board is connected via USB. Not sure why that is so hilarious  ???

The connector to the IO board does look like a SATA connector.  Not that that answers your original question.

Will you please post the exact model number of that Sharp 46" LCD ?

Also, will you please post the dimensions of a "standard wide body pinball cabinet".   I am not familiar with pinball cabinets and would like to know so I can go searching for one.  I am assuming the wide body would be the dimensions of the playing field.

He actually posted it earlier in the thread, but it's easy to overlook.  It's a Sharp Aquos LC-46D65E.

Chris77, you might want to consider updating your original post with model numbers for future visitors.

jigenjuke, the 19" lcd is mounted via adjustable mounting angles/brackets.

here are 2 shots of the dmd monitor

unclet, the playfield dimensions of newer bally/williams widebody machines (like my star trek tng) are approximately 108cm x 63cm (outside). The exact model number of the playfield screen is: Sharp Aquos LC-46D65E

I am not really happy with the nanotech motion/plunger stuff, so I bought this second hand terminator/star trek gun assembly for replacement.

After some paint and restoration it looks like

I think this is a great (and working) enhancement for such gun-games like T2, STTNG (moveable canons), LW3 (gun videomodes) or simply for Indy, cactus canyon, guns n roses..... as well suitable for any other pinball tables (power sensitive ball-shooting possible)

ive got also some solenoids/knockers (force feedback) and 3 tilt-assemblys for nudging. I am curious how it works. more to come soon.

Furthermore I think about a black powder coated lockbar, legs and siderails...

what do you think?

Did you swap the texture on that gun?

Anyway the black powder coat looks good... prob a lot of effort & money with little reward tho.... then again it may tie it all together more so.

I noticed you said "& working" as if the nanotech part isnt reliable & based on the fact you are not utilizing it maybe that thing sucks?

Please explain if you dont mind, my pinball buddy is holding the next widebody cab he sees for me so it will be my turn to make one of these soon.... I wouldnt want to buy something weak.

I am not satisfied with it and after several days of calibration/fine adjusting I gave up. It is simply to much beta for my taste. the plunger works only with a few tables und calibration is a pain in the ass.

if there were a better software/firmware, it would be perfect (e.g. adjustable deadzones, manual calibration with fix values and the possibility to switch off motion seperatly,...)

at the moment I am testing 2 industry relays for force feedback. the noise and the feedback is very close to a real flipper. I will make a resistance test.

I have installed 2 tilt-assemblies for nudging, too

here you can see the industry relay.

heres a shot of the STTNG gun. I love that gun! gives a new experience to all gun-games.

everything is connected to an IPAC now. the Nanotech stuff is terminated :D

Question on vpforums downloads. There are "spawned" and "full screen" cabinet tables available. What happens if a "full screen" table used on a three-monitor setup. Anything displayed on the backbox monitor?

Thanks

I was going to start another arcade machine project soon, but this may change my plans... would you mind disclosing the total cost for those of us who are feeling ambitious?

3 LCD TVs (one of them being a 46 inch) and a 550 watt power supply, I wonder how much power this thing sucks down?

@ reko
with a 3-monitor-setup, visual pinball displays the playfield, hyperpin the backglass and pinmame the scoreboard/dmd.
most of the spanned tables you can easily modifiy for a 3-monitor-setup.

@ XYXZYZ
the total power consumption is about 550 watt.
the most power is for the old 30" noname LCD-TV (>200 watt). 46" only 100 watt and the pc 200 watt averagely. 19" TFT, soundsystem... 50 watt.

most of this stuff was actually already there, so its hard for me to estimate the correct total cost.

Hi Chris, I joined up here just because of your project!
I am a collector of REAL pinball machines and always hated the idea of playing pinball on a computer screen sitting at a desk, but you have gone the extra mile I think was needed to bring me over to the dark side, and I plan on copying your setup.

Two questions for now...
-Do you have measurements for milling the side for recessing the playfield monitor flush with the cabinet?
-It appears that because of the playfield monitor you had to move the flipper buttons DOWN a bit to clear it.
Does this affect the 'feel' of playing a game since the buttons aren't in the usual place?

Thanks in advance, I'll be bugging you more down the road...

Spencer

hey spencer,

it's better to take the correct measurements directly from your "debezeld" screen. so you are on the safe side right from the start.

here are my measurements for milling ( I think it was 108cm / 4,5cm / 5,5cm )

----------------

yes, the buttons aren't in the usual place, about 2-3cm deeper than the original ones... but after some plays it does not affect the feel of playing anymore.

chris

here is a first digital camera video of the virtual flipper sound (industry relay + 2.1 subwoofer system) vs. a real medieval madness flipper.

I think the virtualmachine sounds better ;-)

I am assuming you only loaded those tables which are clear and have high quality resolutions so they can be appreciated on the 46" play monitor.  Assuming my assumption is correct, would it be possible to list the tables you current have loaded so I can find the real clear ones?

unclet, you need the 16:9 / fullscreen cabinet table versions (visual pinball 9). you will find them at vpforums.org and hyperspin-fe.com.

There are at least 35-50 good ones and most of them are popular titles like Attack From Mars, Circus Voltaire, Indy Jones, etc. etc.

By the way old Bally's cabinets are little wider than WMS wide body. So 46" LCD would fit nicely inside without a need to cut the sides. Just a thought for future projects out there.

so the bottom line is that the nanotech plunger/motion sensor sucks?

how sad.  i was so excited about using them too :(.

have u tried contacting them to see what they have to say about the problems?

also, these might be of interest:
http://www.toradex.com/En/Products/Oak_USB_Sensors

USB HID input sensors ... they have one for motion (bump) and one for distance (plunger).

sounds like u have your own replacement solutions in place now , though.

as I said, if there were a better software/firmware, it would be perfect (e.g. adjustable deadzones, manual calibration with fix values, the possibility to switch off motion seperatly and so on)... but try yourself to contact nanotech, in my case there was no attempt made to provide help   :banghead:  ;D

thanks for the interesting usb-sensors-link.

Awesome dude! I came across your youtube video even before seeing this topic. Made me think of a bartop setup with a 19" LCD. That would fit my budget better then your project hehe. I might just do that someday since I run out of space and vpinball in my cab is just not looking good (need hi res for pinball). I am thinking about a netbook running behind. 19" displaying the table as a secondary monitor connected to netbook and main netbook screen displaying the score board. Im not sure if netbook can do that for now though... Im sure more of those projects will begin to pop around. Good job!

Yeah, I'm under the impression that you need a fair amount of power for the pinball sims, including video chipset, so you should be able to get a laptop that will do it, but I sort of doubt a netbook will.  Haven't played with vpinball myself, so I couldn't say for sure.  I do like the bartop idea, though!

Would you have any details on the tilt mechanism you used? I noticed you mentioned tilt bobs. Did you just use a normal bob and wire it for contact?

Or use one of the accelerometers that are now available?

Simply superb dude!!!
The POTO looks incredible in your huge monitor.
Also.....Raiden IV........uhooohoooo....yes, add a controller, a few push buttons, and try some shumps....(Dangun Feveron....a masterpiece, take a look at it!!)

For my next project, I want to do something similar.

very similar to the Aussie Pin, but 2 monitors.....(is still on the works)

The controller mech:

And an artist view.

But, after seeing your projects, with these monitors.....I think that I will redo all the plans....;)

Hey Chris

That's one sweet pin you have made your self there.

I'm planning my own pin cab at the moment and I'm trying to decide how to do tilt/nudge detection.

Tilt bobs: they "only" detect whether or not the cab is being tilted/nudge right? not the magnitude of tilt/nudge.

How do you detect the tilt/nudge direction? Have you masked off different parts of the outer rings on the two tilt bobs?

Thanks in advance

hey razzer!

yes, the tilt-bobs detect wheter or not, like pressing a microswitch. but the harder you nudge the cabinet, the more detections you will receive. so you have a tilt magnitude / sensivity.

the unwanted areas of the outer ring are simply masked with tape. works great!

Hey Chris

Thanks for the quick reply.

I think I'll go with tilt bobs (Considered using the U-HID G from Ultimarc).

Would you mind listing the make and model of the solenoid you used for flipper feedback?. That would give me an idea of which specs to look for.

I assume a simple solenoid is cheaper than buying an full flipper assembly (32,5$) like the one shown below.

Once again thanks in advance.

the industry relay is cheaper than a full flipper assembly... and its easier and safer (12vdc) to install than a pinball solenoid.

--------snip---------

here is an "easy schematic ;) " to install the industry relay:

its better to use an extern 12V-DC poweradapter (I use an old solid 10amps 12V-DC poweradapter)  instead the pc-powersupply. its just safer.

there is electricity. do it only if you know what you do. I will take no responsibility for this.

here is a direct link to the relay

some pics inside the cabinet...

Just curious, have any vendors contacted you about using your pinball cab as a base for mass reproduction? Maybe it goes against the spirit of BYOAC, but if that was offered as a complete machine or even as a kit, that would be awesome.

Very good work. You're making me want a dedicated pinball cab pretty badly. :)

No. I think mass production of these visual pinball cabinets is not lucrative, because its too custom. Everybody wants another detail, style or size, so its better to build your own.

got a tip in the forums and ordered some mercury switches which I received today.

I use it for front(top) nudging. works very well so far :)  love those miniswitches.

you can perfectly fine adjust this kind of mercury switch which costs only 2 bucks.  simply connect it to your ipac.

one hit --> one keystroke --> one virtual nudge

hey njay,

simply connect it to you ipac, one cable ground - the other swX. you can place it everywhere you want, bottom or sidewall is a good idea. just test it.

The playfield screen is more "invisible" now.

I love that finestructure powder coat. The look and feel is like the original one.

Hi Chris,

you got me as well! I need to build a virtuall pinball cab myself now and living in the same country as you do makes me more confident about the required resources and less concerned about being the only crazy one here  ;D

One quick question for you: The Teufel system you are using is the basic 2.1 set for 120 Euros, right?

Thank you for the inspiration!

Beautifully done, and well excecuted!

It solves the problem on where to put all those pins!

What forums did you get advice from?
I want to poke around and see what kind of info is available.
I have no idea how to set up this software, are there guides available?

can you possibly do a side by side picture of MM and your Vpin running MM ? I know how deceptively real the vpin looks but what better thing to compare it to then an actual pin? Plus I think it'd be a neato picture.

I wonder it the pinball tables are made in 3D or in 2D. With soon comin 3D-TVs the playfield would look like the real thing. =) Only problem that you have to wear 3D-glases to see it =/

Chris, this is fantastic work!

After seeing this a few months ago, I recently started building one. Luckily I was able to find a gutted Demolition Man cabinet on Craigslist. I then bought a returned 46D65U at Best Buy. So far the cabinet has been stripped down and the 46" LCD has been installed.

I think someone asked this above, but with the Demolition Man cabinet, we didn't need to relocate the flipper buttons. (Maybe they were lower than STNG because of the handles?)

I do have a quick question. In the states, I'm struggling to find a 30" LCD TV.

In another topic, someone used a 32" LCD. A 32" 16:9 LCD is slightly wider than 27". To use that, I'd have to notch the backbox. Also it seems like there is a big gap between the backbox monitor and the VFD monitor.

From your pictures, your 30" LCD pretty much fills up the entire area. Is there any chance you could share the exact dimensions an possibly a model number?

Thanks, -- Jason

Would an led tv work as well, or would it heat up and sag after a while cuz it's so thin?

thanks again guys for your kind words

@ jsm174, imo the best place for 30" LCDs is ebay second hand market. My 30" LCD is a noname brand called "medion" with DVI input. Resolution is 1280x768 pixel. Perhaps you can try a 32" as well when you route a gap inside the backbox to slide the 32" LCD in?

@ Miracleman, an LED TV would work as well. I think there are no probs. An LED-TV produce less heat than a regular LCD-TV.

cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris. I have a bunch of searchs on Craigslist and EBay. Hopefully I'll find one soon!

Just for size reference, I did some searches on Medion. The only 30" 1280x768 Medion LCD TV I could find a manual for was a MD41530.
According to that manual, it's display area is 643mm x 385mm (25 5/16" x 15 3/16").

The display area of a current 32" LCD TV (based on a Westinghouse SK-32H640G) is roughly 697mm x 392mm (27 7/16" x 15 7/16") .

So I'm guessing the Medion isn't exactly 16:9.

Thanks again, Jason

Hi Jason,

the Medion is strictly speaking a 16:9.6 / 15:9 , so it fills up a standard backbox a little bit better.

some calculations ;)

16/9 = 1.77 (1280/720 = 1.77)
16/9.6 / 15/9 = 1.66 (1280/768 = 1.66)

cheers
Chris

That's it, I'm sold

Now all I have to do is talk the room mate into letting me build it and put it in the living room :D and once I talk him into it then will come the trouble of finding a old pinball cab in Vancouver to put it all into... time to hitup flippers downtown Vancouver first thing tomorrow to start pricing things out and get the room mate to use his Managers discount at BestBuy to get me a new LCD for it :D

I cant wait :)

As a tip for those looking for a 30in lcd, I spent months watching for one on craigslist with no luck.
Today I decided to call TV REPAIR stores here in Orlando FL and after 15min and 5 calls I found a guy who had a 2005 30in Vizio for $220 and was 5min away from my workplace..
Went and picked it up on lunch, easy peezy.
I had a Judge Dredd cab already, but knew the 30in was (I thought) the hard part, so now will get a Sharp 46 and something for the dmd.

Hey Chris, I see 2 of the 'L' brackets holding the bottom of the 30in lcd in place, but can't tell what else you did to secure it.
The head has 2 wood strips the original art glass rested against on the right and left, and I think your lcd is behind those.
Did you remove and replace those to mount it?
And what is behind the screen to keep it from falling backwards?
Thanks, more questions coming down the road!

Spencer, I had the same problem with the 30". I watched Craigslist and Ebay for two months and finally found a Philips 30PF9946D for $200. (I did spent about 5 hours driving though).

We are using the factory mounts on the back of the chasis with aluminum spacers and m5 screws. If you didn't get a DMD, I'd recommend getting a 15" LCD TV. (I picked up a Dynex at BB for $119). With that, the 30" and 15" both fit completely in the back box.

good to hear the party goes on  ;D

I had to make one of the wood strips removable (via 2 screws) to to install the lcd behind those. behind the lcd is a wooden distance-kepper, so the lcd slides in exactly. but you can also use the factory mounts with m5 screws as jsm174 said.

cheers

Jason, thanks for the tip, I haven't de-cased yet, so I'll have to see what's back there.
I take it you mean the factory mounts for attaching to a wall mount, pretty clever!
How long were the spacers and what are M5 screws?

Nice fit on the 15in below it, but does that kinda push the 30in 'backglass' up a bit higher than it was as a normal pin?
And is your 30in 16:10 like Chris', or as my Vizio states, '15:9' ?

EDIT: LOL, I remembered I HAVE a '15.6' lcd tv packed in a closet I bought on Black Friday LAST YEAR, DOH!
I de-cased it and it measures 8 1/4 tall, is that the same size as yours?
I haven't de-cased my 30in yet as I don't want to make too big a mess in the house til the weekend.
If the 15.6 in is a little too tall I could router out a groove so it will sit 1/4 in. lower.
Jason, I think you just made Chris' design a step better since it appears we don't have to cut out the bottom of the head to fit a square monitor!
This will make transporting the game to any pinball shows much easier.
BTW, looking at the back of my Vizio, it has NO 'wall mounting' screw holes like all newer sets do. :(
I may have to go the wood block route.

Chris I forgot to ask, what are the 4 buttons on the bottom front of your cab, and would those and the protruding speaker covers make it difficult to move/transport your game 'traditionally', with lift carts pushing up on the bottom of the cab?

don't forget the size of an original standard pinball dmd. I think an 15" lcd is too small (width) to display an original sized dmd/scoreboard. do you have exact dimensions of it (de-cased, width/height/depth), so we can check it?

you can take out the 19" lcd without probs, so you can lay down your backbox.

the 4 buttons are volume +/-, open coindoor, and a shiftbutton (e.g. for pause/1-2-5 credits/vp options...).

the protruding speaker cover on the bottom makes it difficult for lift carts.  If you want to move your cab regularly, you could use a thin perforated sheet of metal and countersinked buttons to avoid this problem.

I placed the 15in behind my dmd board and it actually is wide enough with a bit to spare on each side. I have not fired up the lcd there but I'm guessing the image goes all the way to the edge of the panel de-cased. Hopefully I will de-case my 30in and get both mounted this weekend!

got my pacdrive controller (USB Output Driver Board)  ;D

I hope we can realize such things as

- 12v contactors for bumper, slingshots, replay-knocker and game specific-events (like medieval madness trolls when they pop out, when you hit/destroy the castle or the attack from mars ufo, addams familiy when the flipperfingers pushes itself to the rythm of the music....)

- led light color-changing for flipper buttons (flipperbuttons in the original color of the dedicated pincab via rgb-led and color.ini file), blinky start-, extra- or launchball-buttons...

- real flasher / strobes (e.g. for backbox, like the addams family topper)...

- we could use bass-shaker/butt-kicker/body-pumpers for emulating pinball-shaker (earthshaker, roadshow, tales from crypt...) or for game-specific-events, like the MM castle or the AFM ufo...

Guys, this would be so awesome  :D

Thank you! As for the 30" being higher up, I don't have any real "pins" to compare to (except for pics). I think it came out centered. We also had to remove the wood strips for installation.

Chris, I measured the screen several times before I made the purchase. It is plenty wide enough. :) I'll take exact measurements and post them.

BTW, I just made a small website with photos from my project. So far I have ~200 pics. Hopefully they maybe helpful to others.

EDIT:

The dimensions of the 15" Dynex DX-15L150A11 LCD TV de-cased are 14 7/16" x 8 1/2" (367mm x 216mm).

ledwiz arrived and works like a champ!

brainstormed the previous days with ext2k (thx roger!)... here are some new ideas, hope everything will work.

- 3 rgb-led flasher (left, center, right) to emulate every color and viewing angle
- 2 coldwhite U-strobes / stroboscope (e.g. for afm strobe multiball)
- some more siemens contactors :D

Have you figured out how to get VP to interact with the LEDWIZ yet? I'll guess it shouldn't be that hard to edit the scripts... or maybe it is.

But I can't wait to see the end result. How nice wouldn't it be to have flashing start and extra ball buttons etc when you add credits and so on.
A replay knocker would also add that extra touch...

I will definitely follow this thread. Good work so far by the way.

Damn, that is so cool. I have been asking for this at VPForums for a year, and know it is finally happening :)

That also means I have no excuse for not building my own cabinet... but that's another story ;)

Hi,

I would like to congratulate you on a simply outstanding project! This is very impressive! As an owner of several real pinball machines and an arcade emulation hobbyist, I can totally see myself attempting something like this eventually. You are an inspiration!  :applaud:

I wonder it the pinball tables are made in 3D or in 2D. With soon comin 3D-TVs the playfield would look like the real thing. =) Only problem that you have to wear 3D-glases to see it =/

I would just like to mention that it shouldn't be too long and you can upgrade your machine to use a new 3D screen-without-glasses technology for the ultimate virtual pinball experience: Toshiba to Launch No-Glasses 3D TV.

Just imagine a playfield with glasses-free 3D like that and some kind of head-tracking (maybe camera-based like the new M$ Kinect stuff) where the 3D image adjusts in real-time to your actual head position. The future is looking bright for virtual pinball! :)

Regards,
 Ken

here are 2 preview vids of ATTACK FROM MARS. ledwiz outputs are not optimized yet, just a first test.

==> during gameplay ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElS7v5Kq2zc )
3 rgbw topper flasher, 8 force feedback solenoids/contactors for flippers, slingshots, bumpers and special effects, 1 pinball shaker, 1 original replay knocker, rgb button leds for the right button color... the 3 topper lights are mainly for pinball flasher. every pinball has flasher, so you can emulate each color and viewing angle. they are so bright that it reflect to the playfield glass and to the whole room. amazing effect.

you have to see this in real.

==> inside pinmame menu to test the ledwiz outputs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvIQfjlEkfU )

there are many possibilites to optimize the ledwiz output or to generate awesome custom output. you have to look in the pinball manuals for solenoid, lamp and switch matrix.

It is really time consuming, but when it's done - it's mind blowing :D

When the software is released, we should open an "ledwiz output" thread to share our configs.

Man that looks like hard work.  But I've never seen a pinball manual in person before so it's all relatively new.  But either way I hope you find the time to post a vid of Indy when you are finished with the flashers/etc.  This build has made me want to build a pincab of my own but the wife has allready said no to the extra tv's.  Or at least until we get caught up on bills and things.

Keep it up.

"Hey Chuckie, you're up!"

I am so glad that rudy works :D

- contactors for everything that makes "klack" (flippers, bumpers, slingshots, outholes, trapdoor, ramp diverter, ball release, kicker and so on)

- less noisy contactor (back/middle, mounted on the wooden lcd support) for rudy's eyes and eyelids! that is so cool  :afro:

- when you hit rudy ("Owww!!!! that was no accident!"  :dizzy:) or rudys hideout, shaker gets activated!

- flasher works also nice on funhouse

all these toys adds so much fun to gameplay! I think this was the missing part of visual pinball.
thanks again to manofwar  :applaud:

cheers

Hey guys, had a crazy idea...
Can a fourth monitor be added on top of the game to show a 'pinball topper'?
It could have an animated series of pics to simulate interactive lighting on toppers like Addams Family and Whitewater, and just still images for others, but even those could be brought to life if desired.
You could still have these crazy LEDs behind the monitor to give the lighting effect as well.
Just a thought!

Love this project, and would give my right leg to have something half as good as this

What software are you running with the LEDwiz ?? It may be listed somewhere, but i cant seem to find it

I also agree that there should be an LEDwiz topic where people can share there code, I for one have no idea on programming, and any help would be great. At the moment it is just a bit of trial and error

Great work  :notworthy:

Big favor.  What software is running the emulations?

We might move this summer and that would give me a chance to make a game room!  I think pinball is in order!

got my new dualbridge driver today!
works like a champ, even at very low Intensity (I14). I love it!!

with this pwm dualbridge board you can do awesome custom mods with your shaker, which are not available on the real pinball machine.

for example medieval madness

- troll hitt: mini vibration (500ms shaker @ 50%)
- castle destruction: earthquake (4000ms shaker @ 100%)

here is a short vid

fully installed ;)

this table rocks and the gameplay is fantastic, very close to the real machine! JP did a brilliant job on this new scared stiff version!

I think with vp shaker (shaker crate and strobe laboratory) and all other ledwiz toys this table makes more fun than the real deal :D

this sharp tv screen is really nice for virtual pinball. ball movement is silky smooth + nearly no input lag and an awesome viewing angle.

thanks for the good words guys  :)

i looked for good viewing angles and response time. so i found the sharp screens with its "advanced super view" (asv) lcd-panels. sharp did a very well job, i am absolutely satisfied.

if you choose another brand, look for a very small bezel, otherwise the screen won't fit in a standard widebody cabinet.

here are some mounting pics, there is no space left in the cabinet.

Not being much of a woodworker.  What did you use to get the clean cuts on the sides for the playfirls monitor?  Are the siderails wider than the originals to cover it up??

Thanks!  Did you fab your own wider siderails?  Where did you find a 30" LCD?  Everything I am coming up with is 32"  DO you think any chance a 32" panel might fit?  I am near obtaining a Judge Dredd shell and am going to use this thread as my guide for the build.

I use NOS old bally/williams EM siderails to cover the monitor.
You find 30" lcd's nowadays only via second hand. check ebay for it. If you go the 32" route, you need to build a custom backbox for it.

Okay, hooking into the game events just ups the possibilities to a crazy level.  Now the customizations, with a basic framework of hardware, are nearly limitless.  Shakers, RGB LEDs, this is just amazing.

I really need to get through my project queue so I can build one of these.   :notworthy:

This website never fails to amaze me and highlights just how talented you guys are. Outstanding  work :applaud: Chris I wish I had your ability, your project is outstanding. I have a few questions:

1. How much did your project cost you?
2. How well does virtual pinball play? I have never had a go and was currious as to whether it is any good or close to the real thing.

Many thanks

hey guys,

what else could you do with your pincab...

how about playing xbox360 RAIDEN IV vertically rotated!

1080p arcade, awesome viewing angle for shmups, I love it!

I am planning to install mame, too... playing frogger in lifesize ^^ ;)

cheers
chris

I would think that you would have less time to react to things coming in from the top of the screen because it is a little harder to see up there.
Do you actually keep an Xbox 360 in the cabinet or did you just hook it up as a one time thing?  If you keep it, doesn't that create heat problems?
Are you running any MAME games on the cabinet using an Xbox 360 controller?

here you can see the industry relay.

I don't know much about relays, does anyone know if this item (3RT1016-1AB01 CONTACTOR) happens to be a suitable replacement for the relays linked earlier?  The ones in this cabinet sell from $60-138 each.  The one I linked is only $25.

I connected the Xbox simply external. Tested also mame (frogger in lifesize is awesome :D ). You can use the xbox controller with an usb-pc-adapter.

I don't know much about relays, does anyone know if this item (3RT1016-1AB01 CONTACTOR) happens to be a suitable replacement for the relays linked earlier?  The ones in this cabinet sell from $60-138 each.  The one I linked is only $25.

search for second hand siemens sirius contactors (24vdc) at ebay. price range should be 5-15 bucks each.

Thanks.  I just wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be a huge difference between the 12v one and the 24v one.

What software do you use to drive those DMD's?

They look great. If/when I do a vpin, I'd love to use one of those.

Ah. Is that opensource/available or something you've worked up yourself?

This is just beautiful.  Just now tinkering with the idea of doing this.  What an inspiration but probably out of my price range.  But gives me a good place to start.  thanks!

thanks guys!

installed some tables with active backglasses and rgb-led flashers

Hi Chris, I'm building a VP in a William's Widebody cabinet with a 46" playfield monitor. I can't decide whether to put it flush under the glass or if I should put it in a more classic pinball angle a bit down from the glass. Since you seems to have built cabinets with both of the solutions, which do you prefer? Thank you!

Hi,

hard to say, in the end it's a matter of taste. with sunken playfield you have the possibility to add lights on the backboard and/or sides. it also gives a little "fake" 3d effect.

on the other side, vp tables get better and better. lightning, effects, "sunken" playfield optics are really nice today.

cheers
Chris

Thanks for your input! I think I'll put the playfield flush to the glass. What distance do you recommend between glass and TV? 😊
