Cuba is only part of the equation. Sugar prices in the U.S. is artificially inflated (subsidized I guess?) and imported sugar is restricted (not just from Cuba, Canada manufacturers sugar as well).

Yeah. NOW. But in the 50's they were you're fifth biggest trading partner, and you were their biggest. Sure, they make a fine cigar, but that's not what kept their economy going  ;)

No, it's actually kinda amusing. Baby steps, you know.

I very rarely drink soda.  But, on the occasion that I do drink a soda, I prefer the ones made with sugar over HFCS.  It's a taste thing for me.

That's true, however, I doubt the scenario would be any different now if Cuba was never embargoed. Sugar prices would still be higher than they should and Corn would still be considered the joke end-all cure-all for our problems.

I can dig that. I don't recall even in the early 80s there being sugar on the labels of cans.

protokatie:
There is a conspiracy theory that the whole reason why New Coke was made was to allow coca-cola to reintroduce their old cola back with HFCS. Before new coke, it was sugar, when they re-introduced it (after the failure of new coke) it had HFCS instead.
