Hi Score Comp #31: Twin Cobra *With GGG Premium Spinner Knob as prize*

Ummon:
You were in second place. Not that I expect this to remain very long, cos while this game isn't that hard and I may be able to score higher than this, I'm not a natural at these later vertical shooters, and expect some higher scorers coming in.

I'm using my main MAME/gaming rig. I actually had good fortune on this time around using the blue gun. I think I've gotten yellow before and it seemed just like blue. Green is different, straight green lasers.

I did beat the first boss on my first copter, though I did use most of my bombs. I did pretty well into the second stage, but bought it just before the second boss. Then it was all new so just went with what I could.

- My killer 418k score wasn't on my first try.  At first, I played a few games of Twin Cobra (US) [Rom twincobu], thinking it was the same, except for some "Winners Don't Do Drugs" type message, but then I switched to the proper ROM.  My good score was maybe my 8th or so game.  Last night's attempts were mostly disappointing, all around 100k, and only 1-2 games >200k...I always do better playing on instinct vs. knowing patterns & getting lazy & making assumptions...Oh, and I never played TC more than a few times in the past...

- There are 1UPs in the game.  I found 1 in 1 of the 2 short horizontal (left-right) ships on the water level.  I think I saw a 2nd somewhere but I forget where.  The place where I saw my 1st 1UP doesn't always produce a 1UP there--might be random or a function of something else.

- You get only 100 points for picking up a P-Star, but you get 3000 for each P-Star you 've picked up on your current helicopter when you reach the landing platform after a boss.  Moral of the story: use your bombs to kill bosses--don't die!!!  You should have 6 bombs when you get to the 1st tank boss--no excuse for dying there!

- Game can't show >2 power-ups floating around simultaneously.  There's a point pretty early in the game where a power-up helicopter comes around & then a pair comes by not long after.  If your first power-up is still floating about while you shoot both copters in the pair, you'll get gypped out of one of them--it will disappear.  So, try to pick up the colored weapon power up even if you don't want it--pick it up when it's on your current color to be sure that future power-ups appear OK.

- When you shoot a vehicle holding a power-up, the power-up scoots to the center of the screen & follows a square pattern that gradually grows until it finally leaves the screen after a while.  This really baits you into trying to pick up stuff in the center of the screen while enemies are blitzing you.  That tactic plus the greedy pickup of P-Stars leads me to pronounce that this game is a master baiter.

- Picking up a colored weapon change power-up does not increment the weapon power, even if you pick up the same color you currently have.

- Order of colored weapon power-up color cycle: red, blue, green, yellow.

The non-red weapons are all pretty weak at low power-up levels.  I recommend sticking with red until your weapon's more powerful & then switching to the color of your choice.

  - Red: doesn't spread out enough for my taste for a game w/ enemies all over the place

  - Blue: my favorite--wide spread, but weak & sparse at low levels

  - Green: never liked skinny powerful beam weapons in games w/ enemies all about--makes short work of bosses, though, and beam doesn't stop when it hits an enemy--it always continues to the top of the screen

  - Yellow: tempting but weak--side shots are handy, but backwards shots are pretty much a waste--has to be at a very high power-up level to be effective

That's all for now.

I was using the US version at first too.  My submitted score was on that version.

I've started playing the World version, but I can't really tell if there's a difference.

Also, why does the helicopter sometimes not land at the end of the first level.  Several times now I've just flown over the ship  and started the second level.  The music doesn't even change.

I didn't see any difference between the US & World versions, but there are often difficulty differences (sometimes subtle) between games released in different regions.

I too have flown over the landing pad many times after defeating the 1st boss.  I started trying to navigate my helicopter to try to land on it manually, but I don't think that does anything...

It seems to skip the landing when you die just before/with/just after the boss.  You've got no P-Stars anyway, so nothing lost.  It must have some trigger for the landing sequence that gets skipped if there's a death at a certain instant relative to the boss death...I don't think I've ever skipped the landing pad on a no-death effort...

I thought I had you jason, 377,000 something, sorry no screenie, I'll post one later. I agree with you about the landing thing, if you don't have any P stars to cash in I don't think you land. On my highest run, I made it to the 2nd boss without dying, probably would have caught you if I had beat it, also, did you complete the 3rd stage? I made it to the boss when I hit game over.

you REALLY have to survive the 1st boss without dying to stand a chance on the 2nd lvl. The powerups are a huge advantage.

Good luck everyone
