Time for a vertical shooter, methinks.  Apparently, Wolfmame 1.06 isn't friendly with Raiden so I went for this title.  I played this when I was young but was never that good.  Lot's of vertical cabs lately so this might be fun to try.

I have played this before, but not much, and not in a while. I don't really like this series - or, rather, Toaplan copied this theme in '90 with Raiden - but after two tries, I managed this. It's definitely the suck if you die at all, cos getting new power-ups is a ---smurfette---, let alone while trying to dodge mega-fusillades of rounds.

I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to pick this competition...my bad. It should be CrazyKongFan picking if it isn't too late?

Don't worry about it--I don't see any official rules in our informal competition that lays out such rules.  I think that this situtation happened once before, when CrazyKongFan won Ms Pac-Man speed-up hack, picked Frogger, & won Frogger.  I got 2nd in Frogger, so CrazyKongFan let me pick Grobda.  That's when & why we started tracking 2nd place in these.

Unless CrazyKongFan has some hurt feelings, let's carry on.  If enough people feel that this warrants a new sentence added to our boilerplate competition intro, let us do it now & get it in writing for the next competition.

Thanks,
-Jason

CrazyKongFan is fine with it, I just msg'd him. Although out of courtesy, and more importantly now that I know...I'll pass that on to 2nd should I ever win two again.

We should at some future point decide on making that boilerplate or not though.

Thanks for the info Jasonbar.

Works for me--then the winner of Twin Cobra shall add a sentence to the boilerplate intro saying that you can't pick 2 games in a row--2nd place picks in that situation.

*Also*, CrazyKongFan has passed on the Premium Spinner knob and elected to have the winner of this one take the prize.

So, once again the premium GGG spinner token knob is up for grabs.

Awesome! I'm hoping to participate in this one. I'm on a big SHMUP kick right now, so the game choice is perfect!
These competitions are awesome, mainly because it gives us more exposure to arcade games we might not have known about. I love looking up information on these games whenever a new comp starts. Maybe I should post this stuff more often, if anyone is interested:

Found these pictures of the cabinet, looks cool!

Twin Cobra ( klov, wiki, arcade-history)
Release Year: 1987
A vertical shoot-em-up. Player(s) fly helicopters firing at air and ground targets. Collect power-ups (green, blue, yellow, or red) for better fire power. Fight a 'boss' enemy at the end of each stage.

This game is known in Japan as "Kyukyoku Tiger".
Difference between Twin Cobra and Kyukyoku Tiger:
* T.C. supports two simultaneous players.
* K.T. supports two players, but only one at a time. For this reason, it also supports Table Top cabinets.
* T.C. stores 3 characters for high scores.
* K.T. stores 6 characters for high scores.
* T.C. heros are Red and Blue for player 1 and 2 respectively.
* K.T. heros are grey for both players.
* T.C. dead remains of ground tanks are circular.
* K.T. dead remains of ground tanks always vary in shape.
* T.C. continues new hero and continued game at current position.
* K.T. continues new hero and continued game at predefined positions.
* After dying and your new hero appears, if you do not travel more than your helicopter length forward, you are penalised and moved back further when your next hero appears.
* K.T. Due to this difference in continue sequence, "Kyukyoku Tiger" is MUCH harder, challenging and nearly impossible to complete !

Yeah, I'm ok with it :) And if anyone is curious, I chose to pass on the spinner knob to the winner of this one, hoping it would go to a better home. I have nothing with a spinner, and no room in my MAME cab for one, so it'd just be sitting in my basement unused anyway. I just like to compete in these competitions ;D

One might'n guess that way back, after some presentation of the idea that was largely ignored, one had to just start a thread on it to get it going....

Winners picking successive game: um, I dunno.....I'd have to go back to the original thread to see if that was covered and how. Which brings to mind whether there might be an interest in some way of collectively archiving these, including the scores table thread?  saint?...thoughts, idea, suggestions?

I don't remember who mentioned it first, but it was mentioned after I won Frogger (which I picked, 2nd place picked the next game). I like the idea of letting 2nd place pick the next game if the guy who picked it won...otherwise, the same guy could just pick all the games he's good at and not let anyone else have a chance to come in 1st ;D

Agreed. I think 2nd should also pick the next game if 1st wins it again. Even though I wasn't aware of the "informal" rule I made sure not to pick a subsequent game I was good at...thus I went with Twin Cobra...a game that although I like, I sawk at.

Oh. Right.

Man, I keep dying at that last double-copter with tons of tanks right before the first boss. No reason continuing after that. (Besides, I want the 'P star' bonus at round's end!) But that should be easily solved with a bomb, and by that time I have plenty to spare one.

Incidentally, controls-wise, the CP for this game blows. Not only a vertical button layout, but made for left leaders.

194,320

I'm in second place so far.

418,000 on the first try is crazy! :dizzy:  I'm guessing you have played this game before.

The second level is much harder than the first.  I beat the first on one life no sweat, then lost all 4 lives in the first minute of the second.

The big tank is easiest with the yellow gun.  The blue gun works best on level two.

What kind of setups do you guys play on?  My cab is disassembled at the moment, so I'm using my little 13" PVM in tate mode and a Hori Fighting stick 3.  A decent little rig that gets the job done.

The music in this game is kick-ass.

You were in second place. Not that I expect this to remain very long, cos while this game isn't that hard and I may be able to score higher than this, I'm not a natural at these later vertical shooters, and expect some higher scorers coming in.

I'm using my main MAME/gaming rig. I actually had good fortune on this time around using the blue gun. I think I've gotten yellow before and it seemed just like blue. Green is different, straight green lasers.

I did beat the first boss on my first copter, though I did use most of my bombs. I did pretty well into the second stage, but bought it just before the second boss. Then it was all new so just went with what I could.

Random comments:

- My killer 418k score wasn't on my first try.  At first, I played a few games of Twin Cobra (US) [Rom twincobu], thinking it was the same, except for some "Winners Don't Do Drugs" type message, but then I switched to the proper ROM.  My good score was maybe my 8th or so game.  Last night's attempts were mostly disappointing, all around 100k, and only 1-2 games >200k...I always do better playing on instinct vs. knowing patterns & getting lazy & making assumptions...Oh, and I never played TC more than a few times in the past...

- There are 1UPs in the game.  I found 1 in 1 of the 2 short horizontal (left-right) ships on the water level.  I think I saw a 2nd somewhere but I forget where.  The place where I saw my 1st 1UP doesn't always produce a 1UP there--might be random or a function of something else.

- You get only 100 points for picking up a P-Star, but you get 3000 for each P-Star you 've picked up on your current helicopter when you reach the landing platform after a boss.  Moral of the story: use your bombs to kill bosses--don't die!!!  You should have 6 bombs when you get to the 1st tank boss--no excuse for dying there!

- Game can't show >2 power-ups floating around simultaneously.  There's a point pretty early in the game where a power-up helicopter comes around & then a pair comes by not long after.  If your first power-up is still floating about while you shoot both copters in the pair, you'll get gypped out of one of them--it will disappear.  So, try to pick up the colored weapon power up even if you don't want it--pick it up when it's on your current color to be sure that future power-ups appear OK.

- When you shoot a vehicle holding a power-up, the power-up scoots to the center of the screen & follows a square pattern that gradually grows until it finally leaves the screen after a while.  This really baits you into trying to pick up stuff in the center of the screen while enemies are blitzing you.  That tactic plus the greedy pickup of P-Stars leads me to pronounce that this game is a master baiter.

- Picking up a colored weapon change power-up does not increment the weapon power, even if you pick up the same color you currently have.

- Order of colored weapon power-up color cycle: red, blue, green, yellow.

The non-red weapons are all pretty weak at low power-up levels.  I recommend sticking with red until your weapon's more powerful & then switching to the color of your choice.

  - Red: doesn't spread out enough for my taste for a game w/ enemies all over the place

  - Blue: my favorite--wide spread, but weak & sparse at low levels

  - Green: never liked skinny powerful beam weapons in games w/ enemies all about--makes short work of bosses, though, and beam doesn't stop when it hits an enemy--it always continues to the top of the screen

  - Yellow: tempting but weak--side shots are handy, but backwards shots are pretty much a waste--has to be at a very high power-up level to be effective

That's all for now.

I was using the US version at first too.  My submitted score was on that version.

I've started playing the World version, but I can't really tell if there's a difference.

Also, why does the helicopter sometimes not land at the end of the first level.  Several times now I've just flown over the ship  and started the second level.  The music doesn't even change.

I didn't see any difference between the US & World versions, but there are often difficulty differences (sometimes subtle) between games released in different regions.

I too have flown over the landing pad many times after defeating the 1st boss.  I started trying to navigate my helicopter to try to land on it manually, but I don't think that does anything...

It seems to skip the landing when you die just before/with/just after the boss.  You've got no P-Stars anyway, so nothing lost.  It must have some trigger for the landing sequence that gets skipped if there's a death at a certain instant relative to the boss death...I don't think I've ever skipped the landing pad on a no-death effort...

I thought I had you jason, 377,000 something, sorry no screenie, I'll post one later. I agree with you about the landing thing, if you don't have any P stars to cash in I don't think you land. On my highest run, I made it to the 2nd boss without dying, probably would have caught you if I had beat it, also, did you complete the 3rd stage? I made it to the boss when I hit game over.

you REALLY have to survive the 1st boss without dying to stand a chance on the 2nd lvl. The powerups are a huge advantage.

Good luck everyone

I don't recall how far I got on my big run--you can look at the number under "AREA" on the high score table & compare mine to yours...

I started counting power-ups to see if they were random or had a pattern.  They seem to be the same each game.  You get only 4-5 or so weapon upgrades before the 1st boss--way too many of the darn colored weapon change power-ups...ripoff...

Oh, and I often *do* land with zero P-Stars after the 1st boss...I think the skipping is a function of *when* you die relative to the boss, not based simply on the quantity of P-Stars.

Yah, if I die before the 1st boss, I usually restart, as I don't really have a chance at a big score...

Thanks,
-Jason

Currently in second!

498,480

If I die before the first boss I'm just gonna restart from now on.  It's pointless to continue any further, and I know I can beat the first level without dying.

You're right about subtle difficulty differences between versions.  Often it seems like the US or World versions are harder than the Japanese original with shmups.  In this case it is reversed.  Kyukyoku Tiger is much harder than Twin Cobra.

It feels like the world version is just a little bit slower to me, but maybe that is just my imagination.

The third level boss is the easiest so far.  I was able to beat them both with just a regular red gun.

At the 1st landing spot, you should have 10 stars & a 30k bonus.

Bosses 3 & 4 have 2 parts.  Get rid of the closer part first.  Then the far part is pretty easy to pick off.

Boss 2 stays far away most of the time, but then he gets closer & you need some sort of side weapon, then the game will advance whether or not you've killed him.

Nice score! This happens to be a great Toaplan shooter...

*Most likely* i'll eventually end up building a Twin Cobra. In those above cabinet pictures..poor atari cabinet :( the taito conversion I like it in though. I think that this game was a kit-only just like many other romstar distributed games .

here is my NOS side art set tucked away for such an occasion:

I want to buy the sticker sheet for this game the yellow button stickers etc if you have a NOS sticker sheet PM me.

Yeah, I found and collected a 1UP last night. I was all, what? I figured it was an extra chopper, but was too busy to take stock an all.

Bomb! Bomb Now!  Except, I do die when I bomb because I'm trying to land it as close as possible, and the range of bomb flight blows.

No two power-ups at the same time. Aha. I wondered last night what happened at one point, but figured it might've been that. ---daisies---!

"- Picking up a colored weapon change power-up does not increment the weapon power, even if you pick up the same color you currently have."

Not true. Blue does - but incrementally, and not necessarily every time, but after about five or six, it becomes five or six shot spread, followed by several shots in each line, and then at some point the middle line adds more. At this point, you're pretty rockin, and enemies are largely dust. Still difficult, though.

No landing after boss: yeah, I think it's if you die. Same thing happened to me just before the second or third one. I was so cleverly avoiding the shots by finding the pocket and moving within it, short little jumps when necessary, but staying put otherwise - and then AH! OF COURSE, when I came back, it only took a shot or two. Not even a bomb was needed!

So, on that note, here's my latest run from last night. Took me about eight tries. Sorry, Hewskie, i still have....erm, third. I got to the second boss on my first chopper, and like mentioned above, blundered. The first image is just after the second boss. Again, I just went as far as I could, cos I was back to regular fire. Damn, the thing don't just take one or two, it take 'em all!

Mmm. I've been playing the US version, too.

I switched my little PVM in for one of my 19" PC monitors.  The small screen just made bullets too hard to see.

I turned my monitor on it's side and put my FS3 on the computer desk.  A pretty good ghetto candy! :lol

I've started playing on the second player side all the time.  I think most of the time things on the right hand side of the screen are easier, and respawning there is easier.

Had some good runs in the 300,000's tonight, but I keep dying right before that essential 1up in level two.  Without it I can't quite make it far enough to get that extra extend that I need to reach up to 500,000.

I can beat level one without dying nearly every time now, so now I need to focus on beating the level one boss without bombing and saving them for level two.  Should be pretty easy with yellow or blue gun.

What a ---smurfing--- ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?---. ---goshdarn--- collision detection on a double chopper just before the second boss. I played it through and still got about 350k, but ---fudgesicle--- almighty. (Yes, this is bitching.)

Yellow gun blows. I ain't usin it, but I forgot to mention last time, an Jack just reminded me. BAD yellow gun. BAD.

Wow Ummon, don't hold back, tell us how you REALLY feel :laugh2: Also, toggling between censored and uncensored, the censoring on the last word of your first sentence is hilarious.

I played one game, but didn't get very far, but I was using a laptop keyboard. Not sure if I'll get a chance to try it on my MAME cab...going on vacation to Funspot :woot, although if they have one (don't remember if they do)...and I do decent, I'll take a pic of the screen.

They do have a Black Tiger, I played it last year when I was there. Now whether or not it's on the floor, I don't know. One area they use for games in the summer has golf simulators in starting in November, so a couple dozen games go in storage when they open up the golf simulators (the games are set up in front of them in the summer). Black Tiger was in that area last year.

Oh, BTW, the TG (and supposed default) settings are to get a free guy @ 100k, not 50k & then every 150k.  So we're on an easier settings, and high scores are still in the millions!  =O

Hmm, I selected the settings from the TG website for the romset? Strange...

Dang... sacrilege to box up a Black Tiger cabinet for golf simulators

It don't matter. It ends up being the same, cos if you can't beat the first boss on your first guy, let alone first three, you're a loser.

You know what? A really good idea would be an updated score table in the original post.
