One of my favorite arcade games of all time is Black Tiger.  However, after a while the patterns/jumps etc are fairly predictable.  There is another version of the game called Black Dragon which is the Japanese version of the game. As with many Japanese originals/versions it is considerably harder. Dropping boulders are more numerous and have to be learned. Boss fights have been mixed up and the enemies storm you harder than in Black Tiger.  You also can't duck to avoid boss flames/lightning in this version.

I will be playing this game as I have never played Black Dragon more than a handful of times, originally thinking it was merely a Japanese version of the game at the same difficulty.

Rules:

- Use only the Japanese Romset (Blkdrgon)

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Default DIP switch settings: 3 Lives, Difficulty Normal (5)

- Last day is Friday, November 6th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

PRIZE: TokenTop™ Premium Spinner Knob from GroovyGameGear To be fair this prize will go to 2nd place *should* I win.

Haven't really played this one much, but I really like Black Tiger, so hopefully this one won't be too frustrating :)
Can you list the default settings, since they may have changed for different versions of MAME? For example, WolfMAME 106 uses 3 lives, difficulty 5, continue yes (but we can't use that, of course)

Black Tiger already kicks my butt. I'm out.

Nice choice, though. Got a prize in mind?

Okay, I have been thinking about a prize and I want something that could benefit people as an upgrade or option if they already have said item.  I will be placing an order with Randy within the next two weeks and will add this to the order:

http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=86&products_id=280

A TokenTop premium spinner knob.  Colour will be black with the Token Inlay BYOAC Logo.

NOTE: If I do manage to win, I will send out the prize to 2nd place, so added incentive for the slackers!

I like Black Tiger. Remember it from in the day. Never really played it, though watched a lot of people do so, and then got into it some in MAME. I have gotten over a hundred thou on it, recently, whilst not trying too hard - spending time memorizing stuff is just work - so I'm game for this.

Heh - just signed in for the first time in a number of years since I'm looking at this Donkey Kong machine in my garage and I find this - a competition for one of my most nostalgic games.  Used to play Black Tiger on a cocktail at the Round Table where I grew up and could finish it on a quarter.  :)  Maybe I should try my hand at this. :D
One word of warning when building a Mame cabinet, hook up the controls LAST!!!  If you don't, it will probably take you 3 - 6 additional months to finish the cabinet.  -JustMichael

Ya it's a great game.  Just remember this game is Black Dragon and quite a bit more difficult so if you are in the competition ensure you are using the Black Dragon rom ;)

Many of the techniques in Black Dragon work as in Black Tiger but items are more expensive and some of the hidden objects aren't where they should be...

Boy, this game is meeeean!   :hissy:

Treasure chests & jars that sometimes produce treasure & sometimes produce fire or bad guys, cute blue blobs that look like yummy potions but kill you, enemies that appear on you (especially those fat fire-breathing mummies!!!), rocks that fall on you to knock off your armor & then bounce on you to kill you, etc.

Played 1 game of Black Tiger for comparison.  A cakewalk!  Even the store items cost less!   :-\

After a dozen or so runs, here's my best so far: 37,200.  Bested my previoush high by a whoping 100...

So, I really don't understand the potions that you can buy & your stamina & what poison means...even Black Tiger doesn't explain that stuff very well...anyone figure that out yet?

Thanks,
-Jason

Decent start though Jason!

Your health is measured by your vitality.  Wearing armour will ensure that your armour takes the hits before your vitality does...the higher armour the more damage you can take.  Once you lose your armour you have only vitality for protection.

Weapons work in a similar fashion, the better weapon, the more damage you do.

Your weapon is a combination of thrown knives and ball and chain. If you are poisoned you lose the knife portion of the weapon attack.  Vitality potions cure poison and confusion.

You can also suffer confusion attacks that change your direction.  The keys allow you to open chests which can hold zenny coins or potions.

TiPS:

Scattered throughout the levels are bonuses embedded in the walls...some provide you with armor upgrades, free lives, points etc.

The stone bosses don't have to all be killed...if you kill the beige/orangey one one first it automatically destroys the others.

Always stock at least a couple of vitality potions and keys.  Get your first weapon upgrade but skip over the 2nd and go straight for the 3rd as soon as you can.

Thanks for the info.

It seems that vitality is all or nothing, though.  If I lose my armor, the next hit always seems to kill me...

Wait, so buying potions at the store gives you a longer vitality bar?

Oh, I never tried attacking the walls for bonuses--I'll do that!

I've never gotten close to enough zenny to buy more than the cheapest weapon.  I had almost enough for the 3rd armor once, but I figure that I die so much from falling that the armor's not a good investment...

It seems that you keep your weapon & armor upgrades when you die, right?

Thanks,
-Jason

You won't increase the bar with vitality potions but you will prevent poisoning/confusion which is just as good. The armour upgrades are worth it not only for the boss battles but for the hits you can take while wearing it...once you know where the pits and jumps are you will rarely if ever get spike killed from a jump.

You revert back to the basic armour but you do get to keep your better weapon.  Ill record a game and post it within a couple of hours and show the first few levels.  The hidden objects are generally along walls where you go up/down...so if you are climbing up beside a cliff for example, the cliff likely has a bonus.

I'll start it off with 256200 and a recording.  This was my first game but it shows a game to round 4 and all the bonuses hidden up to that level (that i've found in Black Tiger...different ones exist in this game apparently)..I noticed one in particular that was in Black Dragon but not in Black Tiger.

Lol, I also noticed I didn't follow my own advice about waiting for weapon 3...this game is a lot tougher though so I just went with it hehe.  Oh and you gain extra vitality based on level progression.

I've never had problems with running out of keys. They're everywhere. So far to me it seems the bonus items are in the same place. Little bit different enemies, but it's minimal. Of course, the boulders are more frequent, and that's what I mainly got waxed on, but still made a decent score, considering the unfamiliarity.

I skipped upgrading armour, went for the first weapon upgrade, and was heading for the second, but bought it before that with still 800 zenny to go before getting it. I hadn't thought about saving up for the third weapon upgrade. The little I've played it, relatively, I remember needing it, and then by that time there were so much points to be had that the third one was easy to pay for.

....hey, I'm in second place.....

Make that 3rd place ;D
Anyway, I agree, the bonus items all seem to be the same to me as well. I have had trouble with keys, particularly at the start. I always buy a couple just to be safe anyway. The boulders and bats (I guess that's what they are...the ones that come out in pairs) as well as the blue blobs all seem to be more frequent, which really gets in the way of the other enemies, causing you to lose armor quicker. That, and the higher cost in the shops really makes this game alot tougher. Well, enough of that, here's my entry, for 1st place so far: 292950, including the INP, done with Wolfmame 106.

Comparing it to a game of Black Tiger with the same difficulty setting (5), I did notice a few more differences. Those guys that appear in the air on the 4th level that have to be shot 3 or 4 times (and make fire come out if you don't shoot them) appear in pairs on Black Dragon, and usually only singly in Black Tiger. A few of the hidden items are different (although the locations are the same). In Black Dragon, on the 3rd level on the tall cliff area with all the caves, the hidden item is a star (which doesn't appear to do anything). On Black Tiger, it's +3 armor. The 100K bonus item on level 4 in Black Dragon along the left cliff is only 50K in Black Tiger. The little bursts of fire that come out of the walls seem to be in more places on Black Dragon, and those yellow man-eating flowers seem to have a few more of them in Black Dragon. I haven't made it to level 5 in Black Dragon yet, so I can't compare anything past level 4.

I might just have my memory playing tricks on me but I was pretty sure that star I found on level 4 wasn't in Black Tiger at that spot...but you guys are right and it's just me lol.  It is armour in Tiger.  As for keys, I would agree with CrazyKongFan it's usually the beginning where lack of keys are an issue...later on its a moot point, agreed.

I think you will both agree there are some additional flame demons and block foes than there are in Tiger.   I also haven't made it to lvl 5...but I like the challenge so far of Dragon in terms of difficulty.

OK, played another game, scratch what I said about the little hidden star on level 3. It gives you +2 armor. Anyway, upped my score to 310250. Didn't really get any farther, but point pressed a little on the dungeon stages. Man this game kicks my butt on level 4. INP done with wolfmame 106 (as usual :) )
Epyx, the star is on level 3. On Black Tiger, it looks like a round piece of armor that goes on your wrist. The hidden items I've found on level 4 are a mask (worth 100K on BD, 50K? on BT), 1UP, and another armor increase near the dungeon entrance.

Ya, that's right. And you aren't kidding...lvl 4 is a butt kicker in general. It's almost a moot point to say you've won Black Tiger when this thing just mocks you at lvl 4 lol.

Also, not sure about you guys but for me it's pretty much mandatory to have armour for that first dragon, unlike in BT...or im just sucking bad ;)

EDIT: Finally make it to lvl 5 but realize I missed my 100k bonus hehe...doh

Heh, gonna make you guys work for this one ;D Finally got past level 4, and cleared level 5 too (without having played it on this version before!) Final score was 506,000. Attached, as usual, a screengrab of the final score and zipped Wolfmame 106 INP. Checking MARP, that barely even cracks the top 10! Some of those guys finished it on the most difficult setting too :dizzy: :notworthy:

-Sigh-  I can't find my MAME ROMs.  :(

Well, hey, at least I got to play it (Black Tiger) a bit on my modded Xbox... :)
One word of warning when building a Mame cabinet, hook up the controls LAST!!!  If you don't, it will probably take you 3 - 6 additional months to finish the cabinet.  -JustMichael

Wow, how are you getting over 500k without continues?? I almost broke 100k. I enjoy this version. It's more of a challenge for a guy who has BT memorized.

NO MORE!!

When you continue, your score is reset to 0, so continuing wouldn't really do you much good anyway, unless you happened to find a real high scoring area. But if you aren't good enough to get there on one credit, chances are you couldn't rack up that much points any how.  I can assure you mine is on one credit...If you don't believe me, you can watch the INP :P

Nice score! I've found a few places to pick up some extra points, so if I can stop making stupid mistakes in other places and dying, I should be able to push mine up another 100+K ;D

Hehe I hear you...Same with me. I have been avoiding a lot of fights as well that could net me at least 25k.  But ya it's the stupid mistakes that get you most of the time.  Like getting too cocky/greedy and hitting a level a bit different than you normally would etc.

My main issues right now are the first winged demon boss (not consistent on him) and the purple flame thrower guys (they get me every time).  The occasional random purple jumping brick armour removal is still a pain in the arse as well.

Thankfully I have all the falling rocks down. I noticed you will always get 1 purple flame thrower on level 4/5 but they randomize his location each time.

Got lucky on this game, a nice "in the zone" game. Made the diagonal jump on my 2nd attempt...phew.  Still had at least 3 brain dead deaths though :(

Great choice!

Never played this or BT, so I certainly won't be in the running on this one, but it's fun to try it out

How do you tell what round/level your on?

By bosses cleared. I think you just have to remember.

By bosses cleared but also at the start of each level it tells you what round you are on next.

And ya Bender, it's a great game and grows on you.

It also tells you at the start of every life, for example, after losing 1 life on round 1, it would say:

Round 1
Ready Player 1
Save 2 Lives

Anyone notice the spelling error on the warning screen at game startup? It says "VILOATION" instead of "VIOLATION" ;D I noticed they fixed it on Black Tiger.

Also, congrats on the score Epyx! I'm still working on it, and my extra scoring thing is working, but I haven't been able to put it together in one game, so I haven't broken 400K with it yet.
