New concept(?), ShelfUp Cabinet
« on: November 07, 2011, 11:34:08 am »
Every year I want to do some personal project, ( last year mini ROBOTRON  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=106245.0)

This year I want to do a little bigger  ;) project.

It is ShelfUp cabinet.

It is a combo machine, it can play my STARGATE arcade board and ROBOTRON( actually it is gamecube MIDWAY collection ).
The Stargate control panel can be hooked to Cube side to play mainly Defender.

This looks like a Top cabinet, but it is not. It is attached to the shelf
and it is only a cover and control panel for the monitor.

Details I want to post later tomorrow. Thank you! :D

[edit] changed to better pic

Definitely haven't seen something like that before - how are you going to attach it to the stargate cab - some type of latches?  will the stargate controls remain exposed when the robotron cab is installed?

interesting idea and interesting take on modularity.

very nice, How slim is that robotron? Do you have any problems with it wobbling while playing?
Very nice build BTW.

Oh, I see - it's attached to the shelf, not the stargate machine.

Thank you, TopJimmyCooks,

As you mentioned, it is attached to shelf, not the STARGATE.
Actually STARGATE cab is shelf and a controller attached to the tool box. :D

But now both is playable. I found this to be very very handy and very simple!  :D
( pic is defender though  ;) )

Thank you for the interest, gbeef.

The ROBOTRON is 490Wx758Hx200D(mm).

The wobbling depends to the shelf it will attach.  :D Mine is very heavy with full of goods (read junk)
and the monitor is also heavy.

If it attache to more stylish shelf with LCD screen, then it will wobble very much!  ;D

Here I want to continue the report.  :)

Recently I got 2 Leaf 8way joysticks and 1 2way joystick.
I incorporated my hand made STARGATE control panel.

Problem is that I have only mini ROBOTRON, so I want to play with 2 human size 8way joystick and monitor. :D
So I fed the video to the monitor and made it playable on my STARGATE cab.

It is super too temporaly, so I made new control panel for ROBOTRON.

Now the fun started, I want to make it a little bit better looking!
The monitor is inside wire shelf and the STARGATE control panel is on the tool box inside the shelf.

So  I decided to make the look more like an arcade upright.

I had this plan 1 year ago, but it was now I could start realizing.

I worked in my 2 tatami workshop.  ;D

From 2 200mmx810mm 15t MDF I hand cutted side board and assembled to see the size is OK.

For time saver, I bought 12mm MDF 600x900 on the workshop and ordered to cut several 490mm wide boards
to make marqee light box and bottom for control panel.

several pics

And painted black inside, and white in the marqee box.

Put 4 bolts M6 to the shelf. Upper 2 bolts shown.

Now I temporaly assembled everything and hooked to the shelf.

Next day (actually several days later waiting for delivery) is the side art, new marqee and  front panel.
It is B0 (1050x1500mm) vinyl with paste with many other goods.  :D

Here I put the print and attached to the shelf.

The side art is based on STARGATE sideart with ROBOTRON coloring is from STARGATE,
nice red background and yellow text! ;)

I didn't have T-molding and difficult to find in Japan, so I put red print on the edge.
It is really bad looking, I want to work on it later for bettter.
Fortunately, when I play everything is dark, so bad details are not noticeable.  ;D
(Actually this cab looks much better on photos  ::) )

I hope you enjoy this long report. Thank you!  ;)
