I remember when this came out.  I played it a bunch at the Red Baron arcade at Franklin Park Mall in Toledo, OH.  Usually joystick-based driving games don't work so well, but the Speed Rumbler is more of a Mad Max car combat game, so it works fine.  You can even run around on foot--pretty impressive depth & variety for a 1986 game!  Great sound & music, good graphics, & all the while, The Speed Rumbler manages to be both cute & tough simultaneously!

Rules:

- Use any ROM set (or a real cabinet of course!).  Since I've never played this game seriously, I'll probably be competing on my MAME 115.  According to MAWS, it seems to have had a very recent ROM rename but no changes to the actual ROMs or gameplay.

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Default DIP switch settings: 3 Lives, Bonus Life 30k & 80k & every 80k, Difficulty Normal.

- Last day is Thursday, October 22th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Although not as impressive as game component shops donating free goodies or isucamper's generous DVD gifts, the winner of The Speed Rumbler will receive a random grab bag of home video game items (likely an Atari joystick and/or paddles, a few cartridges...maybe other items?  Surprise!).

Thanks,
-Jason

I'm only in the M's in my A-Z journey through MAME, so I've never tried this one. I'll give it a go.

At first glance, this looks to be a sort of sister game to Jackal....except that's Konami. Same year, though.

Yep a lot of similarities but to me more of a Mad max feel than military. It reminds me a lot of an Amiga game called Road Raider.

I only saw this game once during my arcade era, and I loved it. It was in a cocktail cab.

I only got to play it a few times, so I never got very good. It was on the other side of town, but I did make an effort to go there sometimes. However, it was moved after w little while and then I never saw it again.

This wants to be played on a vertical cab, at least if you are using a CGA monitor, because it needs so many vertical lines. This means that if you have a horizontal CGA monitor then you'll need to run the game in an interlaced video mode like 640x480, which won't look so good.

Despite this game being one of the reasons for me building a vertical cab, I still haven't played it extensively and so am still quite a noob at this game.

I run the game on my horizontally set WGD9800 and it runs fine at a non-interlaced 352x240 and looks great.

WTF! Why is the SOB jumping out of the car randomly when I'm shooting!? There is second button to do that! If that was happening in arcades after paying for the game, by now i'd rip the joysticks out! Don't bypass the autocensor! --- saint

If your car is about to blow up you are *supposed* to bail out of it with the 2nd button.  Then try to survive for a few seconds before a replacement car arrives.  If you accidentally hit the escape button while your car is healthy then yes you will have to re-enter...I have had no issues with it being beside the fire...for you maybe re-map it further away?

EDIT: Default seems to be 30k, 70k, 70k for free men? So change it to 20k, 70k, 70k?

I run the game on my horizontally set WGD9800 and it runs fine at a non-interlaced 352x240 and looks great.

Trouble is, the game runs natively at 240x352, so you must be losing a lot of detail - about 1 out of every 3 pixels.

Interesting.  On 115, it starts with 20k, 70k, 70k by default.  On 132, it starts w/ 30k, 80k, 80k by default.

MAWS shows a DIP switch default update on 131u4, so 30, 80, 80 seems to be the correct default.  I'll update the top post.

Thanks,

If you want to use an horizontal CGA monitor, just change the geometry when you play that game - if you can get a mode that doesn't overscan outside the viewable area of the image.

By the way, looks as someone forgot to put in the parent romset so's we didna ave ta goo loookin foor et.

I don't like this game at all. (Well, the graphics are cute for '86.) Sloppy car movement, seriously delayed fire repeat. I bet Jackal smoked it out of existence back then.

If you want to use an horizontal CGA monitor, just change the geometry when you play that game - if you can get a mode that doesn't overscan outside the viewable area of the image.

If you have a horz CGA monitor then your choices are 640x480, or some other interlaced mode.

How else do you fit in 352 vertical lines on a screen designed to do no more than 288?

Lol, why did I know you were going to post that! ;)

It's actually fun when you get into it..the aiming and control aren't too bad...control is very TimePilot'ish and upgrade shots are much more accurate and powerful as well as going further.

Wow this game gets hard fast! I'm up to 51,000 or so (sorry no pic yet, will post one once the scores get higher  ;) ) and am having some serious trouble. For instance, anyone have any tips on how to get passed the red barrels that shoot sideways across the whole path on the 2nd level? I don't think I've gotten passed them without dying at least once (usually twice) yet. Also, those land mines that appear right after the barrels I was just talking about make me so angry.  I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what killed me 3 times in a row at the same spot!!! before I realized there were land mines on the ground

 :laugh2: but isn't it fun?!  :laugh2:

Good luck everyone and lets hear some tips!

hmm, only tip I can offer is beat the first level without dying or losing your car. If you do that and collect all/most of the powerups and complete the level in under 2:00 you can come out of it with about 43,000 points. Points come a lot slower for me in the next 2 levels.

Good luck

Here are tips from me. Avoid red barrels like the plague, don't try to squeeze by the large parked trucks, stop and shoot them to destroy them, bullets don't do nowhere near as much damage as getting caught between a truck and a wall. Stop and shoot at the truck with 3 cannons. Pick up all the power ups and bonuses. Bonus for making in under 3min. Is only 1000, but there is plenty 2000 bonuses all over. On 1st level there is a route around the wagons with cannon balls and shooting rockets.

Thanks for the tips! How do you deal with the red barrels in Level 2?

It's hit or miss for me, I usually just approach on NW slanted angle firing like crazy. If you time it right, you can plow through all blue barrels, if not, you can blast at least a few of them out of your path. I've only made it through all 3 rows a few times without dying... usually I lose at least 1 life there though.

Good luck

I havent had any scores good enough to bother mentioning, but I have to say I've been playing along each week as you guys pick another game.  I find it really fun to discover these hidden ones and have them a weekly focused discussion.

heh, I agree that these games are a lot of fun and I try to play along each week but am usually well outclassed! Actually, as much fun as it would be to win, I'm hoping someone will come through and slaughter my score soon so I won't have to pick a game for next week. I'd probably pick a horrible game that nobody likes  :banghead:

Speed Rumbler is one game that I would have chosen, given the chance, although I'm not that good at it.

I've got a great suggestion for you, as my chances of winning this are slim:

Donkey Kong Jr (Japan) - DKONGJRJ

I prefer the Japanese version 'cos it has better level progression.

Stop and shoot at the truck with 3 cannons.

:o You can destroy that thing?!?!? It took me so long to learn how to get past it without getting pinned and I still can't do it every time. Learn something new everyday I guess  ;D

Stop and shoot at the truck with 3 cannons.

Yeah, that tip was really useful. The big truck ain't so tough. If you find the right spot (near the front) then you won't take any damage from it either.

@Hewskie - I read your post about the barrels and figures that the only way to do it was to "zone". When I got there I did a few donuts to keep the bad guys busy, and hoped for some of them to slide into the barrels. whether that worked or not, I kept an eye out for a gap or some blue barrels and made my runs appropriately. Seemed to work and I didn't die ... !

I just had a dream run - got thru the first two levels on one guy. But trashed the car near the end of lv2 and had to walk over the bridge!

I got 60100. I had never been to lv3 --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type--, so I died pretty quick. Will try to post pics later.

More squeaking past!  74,900

It took a week (much of which was MAME PC upgrade/repair/recovery...) before I could sit down & play a few games.

Does everybody else notice slowdown when there are more than a few things on-screen?  I think MAME is still running @ 100% speed, so I guess the original game had some slowdown...?

Thanks,
-Jason

As long as that's the way it originally runs, MAME *should* slow down ;D It shouldn't actually be fixed to not do it. I know Joust and Gaplus do that as well.

Ya, that was pretty  much par for the course for the 8/16 bit processors back in the day.  Everything was coded to an average tolerance cause they didn't have the horsepower.  Games that had consistent patterns and numbers of enemies were fine but ones were you could create a train of enemies often suffered from CPU overload ;)

Off topic MAME awesomeness rant:

MAME will emulate the original hardware exactly.  So if the original processor slows down, so will the emulation.  However.  Through some fanageling, you can have MAME over clock the processor it is emulating to eliminate this slowdown.  You can overclock it infinitely until you are using 100% of your PC's CPU and then MAME will start slowing down.

I'm doing this with Double Dragon and Double Dragon 2.

The one downside to this you have to enable cheats to do it, and thus can't save any high scores.

I consider changing the CPU speed in MAME to be outside the parameters of playing the game the same as everyone else. For the competitions, I think it should not be allowed.

71900 On my first game today! Nice! I got like 48100 after only 1st level! I don't think I played more than 20-25 games total so far. I think I just might have a chance to catch up to jasonbar. Unless of course he is busy "at work" as I type this.

Also I noticed that the cannon balls that shoot up in the air can be stopped if all 3 windows are destroyed. But that's hardly useful, as it takes more time to destroy them than just pass by them.

Wow! That's more like it! Got a few questions if you don't mind. How far did you get? Did you actively stick around and rack up points or was your primary goal just to stay alive and beat the levels?

I seem to be stuck in the 50-60k range, any tips?

The difference between finishing fast and slow is only 1000 point whereas you have 4 minutes for each level before you run out of time. I spent the maximum time on the first 2 levels gathering points and then died at the start of level 3. You can rack up some points this way but I do notice that the game increases in difficulty dramatically not just on how far you get but how many points you have. IE level 2 is a lot harder entering it with 50k than if you enter it with 25k...

Just finished it last night by using *lots* and *lots* of continues.  It gets really hard towards the end & you end up just blitzing your car forward & sacrificing it in hopes that you'll hit the next checkpoint.

Strangely, the score on my 1st continue used the score from my original credit as its starting point, but all subsequent continues started from 0.   :dunno

The game starts over after you kill The Zapper boss, & the difficulty doesn't seem to go up.  I just played out my remaining couple of guys & got most of the way through the 1st stage & didn't notice anything different relative to the first time through.

Thanks,
-Jason

I noticed that once after starting a 2 player game... definitely a strange bug.  Agreed though the game gets harder quick but not only levels...score plays a definite factor in increasing difficulty. Once you hit 100k difficulty ramps up considerably.

Almost got through Armed Port, damn this has to be my favourite game atm.  Chaos and mayhem on that level...everyone suicides you, speed and purposely ditching your car are required in spots.

Now to pray Jason doesn't do a 11:59pm on me...was going to wait myself before posting but have to run an errand.

I never did start a Project Announcements thread or add it to my site...it's a neverending work-in-progress & there's nothing really revolutionary or artistic to share for people to have a lot of interest in, so I just put the occasional pic up on photobucket.  The last week or two has been full of tweaking the PC hardware & setting up AutoHotKey scripts for bells & whistles & convenience & security...

Let me know if you guys want the picture to verify my scores or it's ok without it? I didn't expect it would end up even in 2nd place. Btw congrats Epyx!
