As I was setting up my Happ Super joystick up in MAME for diagonals only in QBert, it occurred to me that what this is doing is forcing an 8 way joystick to be recognized as a 4 way for the game (profound insight I know but bear with me . . . ).
That said, if someone was to mount an 8 way joystick like an original QBert stick with the bolts in a diamond pattern as opposed to square and set it up properly in MAME, would this allow decent control in four way games like Pac-Man and Mr. Do?
More importantly, before I drill four more holes in my control panel, has anyone tried this and had success with it? If so, what type of joystick did you use and what type of control panel were you using (steel or MDF)?
My only concern for trying this idea out myself is the subsequent strength of my MDF control panel--any ideas on whether or not the extra holes will cause the control panel to weaken and possibly crack/break under extreme duress? Like say, during a heated round of SFII or Robotron?
