My SF IV controller (Finished!)
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:48:03 am »
I'm building a single player controller, mainly for playing SF IV and other similar games on my PC.  Parts are being canablized from my previous 2-player controller which I don't use any more.

The art I took from some wallpaper site.  Not exactly sure who the artist is, but hopefully they won't mind me using that pic for this project.  Modified it in Photoshop and printed on 11x17 photo paper.

I'm planning to use laminate for the base, but I haven't decided on white or black.  I'm leaning towards black, because at least that way I can reuse the rest of the laminate when I make a full-sized cab.  Also need to still construct an acrylic top piece.

This is really cool. Like the graphics and especially the colors of the buttons. Keep up the good work.

I am totally digging this, great job!

It is inspiring me to redo the art on my PS3 SFIV Joystick.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

jmike, I intended to have white/blue buttons, but don't have any white buttons right now.  But the blue/black doesn't look too bad.

dkssprs , not sure what you mean by the edges of the angles?  Are you talking about the top edges on the base?

Cut the plexi today.  Here are a couple shots of a test fitting w/ T-molding as well.  This was my first time routing acrylic.  Last time I made a CP, I cut it with a jigsaw to try to get it to fit the panel.  Man, routing makes it sooooo much easier (although produces a lot of confetti!).

So what "guts" do you plan on using inside?  Just curious.

For the time being, the KeyWiz keyboard controller from my previous control panel.  I've also got a Happ Super joystick I plan to use.

I may change the components in time, after I make an order for new parts.

Simple, sexy, functional. All you need from a custom stick honestly.

Its sweet man. real sweet. Love the choice of artwork too.

Good job, and I also really like the artwork. Could you provide a link to the site where you found it?

Thanks again for all the great comments!  This is very encouraging for when I start my first full-sized cab.  Hopefully, I can get this controller finished off this week and have some finished pics by this weekend.

Grasshopper, I don't remember exactly which site I got the pic from.  I was searching for "Chun-li wallpaper" with Google Image search and stumbled across the pic while browsing.

Base lamination is in progress.  Pic of my high-tech laminating station:

Never worked with laminate before, so this is a new experience.  A bit of a pain to cut using a jigsaw, but the router goes through it like buttah.

Finished the work on the base/top panel.  All that's left is to wire it which I will probably put off until tomorrow.

A very pleasing result. I can't help myself from wondering how it would look with japanese balltop and buttons though.

Nice work! The artwork is actually called "Chun-Li Style" by a user named Artgerm on deviantart. I saw that and was like holy crap! I know that, it's in my favorites! Awesome controller.

Epyx, nice to meet another Shpongle fan. :D  And 1200 mics is awesome.  Heck, anything with either Simon Posford or Raja Ram is awesome!

Ryglore, thank you, now I know who made this awesome artwork!  They're very talented.

I wired things up (sorta) using the gutted remains of my older 2 player controller.  This is why the wiring is a little messy and some of the connections don't reach.  As a result, a couple of the buttons aren't hooked up.  Also, the underside of the top panel is a bit rough.  Originally I intended to laminate it, but since that meant the T-molding wouldn't be flush, I opted for a couple quick coats of paint instead.  Since it's hidden, I don't really worry about it.

And this thing is awesome for Street Fighter IV.  I'm very glad I made it as no longer do I wind up with cramping fingers after a marathon SF IV session:

Overall, I'm very happy with how this turned out.  Much better than my previous attempt at a controller.  The laminate especially gives the bottom a very nice, professional look.  Much better than paint.

Thanks again to everyone for all the great comments!

Very nice fight stick!
 :applaud:
Though I'd swap out the joystick for a Sanwa or Seimitsu, but if you like the feel of the Supers, who am I to comment.
I agree with the laminate too, it really makes it feel more pro and clean.

Have fun with your marathon, and while you're at it, unlock the rest of your characters!

I think what really makes this work for me is the shaded (but not opaque) areas where the controller and buttons are. Very nice. If I were to do the same type of controller I'd probably do white t-molding though since white is used to highlight other areas and the blue tmolding distracts the red/blue look of the art.

I have that chun li art on an official lithograph :)
