As we move into October and get closer to Halloween, my pick for the new competition is Satan's Hollow by Bally Midway.

Satan's Hollow is a bit of a Galaga clone in which the player shoots vertically at a horde of dragons.  In addition to the Galaga like shooting, the game includes power ups, bridge building, and boss battles to vary gameplay.

I've just discovered this game so I will be competing (I'll give everybody a day or two to catch up).  I find it very interesting with a lot of unique quirks.

Rules:

- You can use either of the two Satan's Hollow romsets support by MAME (or a real cabinet of course!).  I'm not sure if there's any difference between the two.

- One credit only.

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Thursday, October 8th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

As I did with my Gladiator competition.  I am going to offer up a brand new copy of the DVD version of... <cough>... <ahem> the Ridly Scott directed film adaptation of this game:  Legend starring Tom Cruise, Tim Curry, that chick from Ferris Bueller, and a little fairy guy who I actually do a pretty spectacular impression of.  There is not yet a Blu-ray disc version of this movie announced, so the winner will be stuck with the Ultimate Edition DVD version of this movie.  Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

************UPDATE****************

Great news!  RandyT of www.groovygamegear.com has generously offered to sponsor this competition by donating one of his sweet Satan's Hollow replica joystick handles as well as a "Bird Head" Backplate to go with it.  Thank you Randy for the donation!

So the winner of this competition will now receive the DVD, the joystick handle, and the backplate.  At the end of the compeitition, the winner should PM me and we'll get delivery set up.

Cool game, just got 14,000 :)

I'm having a weird issue with it though, not sure if it's a resolution problem or something, but the top and bottom are off screen. I'm using a 27 inch TV and all the other vertical games look fine. anyone know how to fix this?

Nice. Yeah, collision detection is a little 'distanced', but equally so for all parties. Still, be weary.

They had this in the MAME Deca over at TG earlier this year, some people got some really high scores (1-2 million range), but all I could manage was about 50K :-[ You definitely need to learn shield management, since it only lasts a few seconds.

Preliminary score. I did some really stupid ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- early on, resulting in two deaths. Not that I probly would've gotten a lot higher after losing my first 'power-up', but I would've lasted a little longer.

It really ramps up as it gets dark, and even with a single power-up, it's pretty hard to last very long. I have maxed at around eighty grand, I think, though.

Well. I went for another round. And got higher than I've ever gotten, and crossed the bridge four times. HOwdy-doody! Then I ate ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- at the last. Silly deaths, but I was tryin ta squeeze out more bridge pieces.

I was actually gonna rinse dishes....but then had this auspicious feeling. And so it was to be.

Thanks Randy for donating to this competition. Tornado Terry did it in the past with his Ms Pacman replica stick and was quite happy with the publicity for it and the increase in sales. Obviously you're not in need of publicity around here, but perhaps this shell is.

Hopefully this will bring some new competitors into the game and maybe sell a few of these, as well.

OK.  It's important to mention the score being submitted in the message because not all scores in a high score screen cap may be valid (as I learned in the Rampart tourney).

More importantly, I think we finally found a game Ummon likes ;D :P
Your last 2 deaths Ummon, that's one bad thing about this game. Once you get that high (and I don't think the game itself gets harder after a certain point), if you lose a life, you lose part of your power-up, and it's almost impossible to continue since you don't have enough firepower.

Yeah, I don't habitually mention score cos I think it's obvious. As for the panorama, it was in place of a video or inp (I just don't mess with them).

H-hahn-h. Mmm-mmm-mmm. I remember seeing this game released and mostly liked it a lot. Didn't but play it a few/several times, but have explored much more in MAME. It is in '1' of my fave lists set. (I have three, '1' being tops.)

But like I said, before this my hi was just under 80 grand. This was one of those special times that I have on games I'm pretty decent but not great at. I did notice that if you get past, what.....level fifteen, maybe?.....and having crossed the bridge twice, there's a certain hardness that leans off.

The spacing gets shorter of course every time you cross the bridge, and you don't get any more power-ups after the third crossing, but of course get points for all your flags, which is probably how the champs are getting those million scores, milking crossing the bridge. The forth crossing is 14 pieces, and I think stays at that.

Actually, I think I crossed the bridge five times. Not sure. But losing one power-up isn't a big deal. Die twice, and yeah you'll be hatin it unless you're a crack ---smurfing--- shot/have baddie (especially the Devil's) patterns down. But that wasn't why I died the last two times. I just got real sloppy, else I might've at least crested, or even broke, 200k.

I would have picked up Satan's Hollow joystick handles earlier this year if I had the joystick/bases to put them on. (I wish someone would repro those).

You mentioned that someone was making replica Ms.Pac-man joysticks. I assume that you are referring to entire joystick assemblies that do not have the original leaf switches, correct?

I actually need copies of the original sticks with everything that goes on the sticks because I already have three original bases.

But getting back to Satan's Hollow. I became a 2,000,000+ point player earlier this year using a hacked Gorf joystick, which as I soon learned felt nothing like the original Satan's Hollow joystick.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=89807.0

So if anyone has a Satan's Hollow joystick, please let me know.

P.S.: I had to re-type this entire post because because the site wouldn't accept my picture at first and when I followed instructions and hit "back" my post was gone. Is this a correctable problem?

Ouch, this game is a bear.  I've hit a 62k ceiling & can't seem to get any farther.

Comments/strategies:

1 - It's great to get the big bonus points from killing the devil on the right side of the castle, so I don't go over there until I've finished round 3.  I shoot as many baddies on round 4 as I can & then run like a coward over to the right before they bust my bridge.  That way, I get a 3k bonus instead of a piddly 0k or 1k bonus if I kill the right devil "too soon".

2 - Occasionally, this strategy bites me because, if the demons knock out 1 bridge segment immediately on a crowded screen before I can scoot to the right, I can't exit to the right, even if I'm already on the right side of the broken bridge!!!  Cheap!

3 - 90% of the time, I can kill the right devil by just sitting in the center of the screen & firing.  His pitchforks rarely come close & they're usually easy to dodge.  When the spiralling fireballs get close, I tap the shield but stay put.

4 - Those boogers who steal your spare ships can't kill you by contact (nor can you kill them w/ your shield), so don't be afraid to get right under/on top of them when they're making off w/ your spare guys.

5 - The part(s) of the game that I just can't handle are the crowded rounds where you have about 3 seconds before dozens of demons descend upon you & pretty much fill up the whole bottom of the screen with their bodies & bullets & bombs.  I rarely survive their blitz maneuvers--what's the secret on those rounds???

Thanks,
-Jason

I get the bridge built and run away when a hard stage starts.

I don't know how to survive the dark stages though.  This is around 70K for me.  It seems a bit unfair when all you can see of the enemies is a couple of pixels.  :(  Is there a good tactic for this?  Does the game get light again?

Oh, another tactic for some of the hard stages is to start on the far left and shoot like crazy (helps if you have a powerup or two), and when they dive bomb you turn on your shield and go hard-right through the mess.  Keep shooting the whole time, of course.  Hopefully you can get to the other side where they're not attacking, and in the meantime have done enough damage to make the stage safer.

I have tested this a lot but it works for me on one or two of the waves.  Doesn't get a lot of bridge built though.

I'm trying that exact same tactic, so I get at least 1 bridge piece.  I can (almost) never pull it off--on my trip to the right, I'm in the midst of a pile of flame bombs when my shield runs out.  Grrrr...

I've always waited until at least that heart-shaped formation they do, shoot as much as possible, then cross the bridge before they sack it. That's about board eleven I think, or maybe fourteen. So I end up at about forty thou or so. I've tried crossing the bridge earlier once or twice, but the added firepower doesn't seem necessary so early on. I'll try that now again.....

Mmm, not so good. I think one of the point-makers is to wait as long as possible before your first crossing. Then further crossings have all that much more to add. This time round, I crossed three times, the first being at the beginning of the fourth board, arguably the first hard one. I crossed again at the 8th, had a stupid death on the 11th, crossed again at 14, and died somewheres in there a couple more times, and having a TRULY stupid one on the 18th, ending the game at 55840.

It's worth trying again, though....

Okay, did another run, this time crossing the bridge at the beginning of the second board. Again, had some silly deaths - I didn't know you could fire with shield on! - but didn't do badly ending at 97550. My run was as follows:

- crossings at boards: 2, 8 (around 20k?), 14 (45k), 23 (67k)

- deaths at boards: 20, 24 (!), 26, and 27 (I was down to single fire, and the devil blasted me - but I took 'em with me!)

Other stats: bridges are 6, 9, 12, and 14 pieces long. Also, I was correct in that it starts to get bright at 19, eventually getting a light crimson or magenta even.

Okay, another try of first crossing at beginning of second board. There seems no real strategy that is effective in the higher boards, but merely a matter of having at least two power-ups, and being very scrutinizing with your shield time....but of course the distanced collision detection ups the ante on this. Many times I wouldn'tve died if it was more like regular games.

Note: my hi on the 25th was using .104 .  This recent jaunt has been with .134 .

Another little round of experiment on .134 crossing the bridge at the beginning of the second board. I crossed like at least six times, and had two ships stolen. There are three fireballs at the sixth crossing beelzebub. Still, I only got this:

Can you get any more than two powerups at once?

No, I guess not. (It'd be cool if you could have them in reserve, huh?) Doesn't do anything but add points to your score for how many ever flags you got.

Been exploring this even more - like, why not cross at the first board?? So I did that, and then crossed earlier and more times....and yet, each time I didn't break a hundred grand. I once tried again to do it the hard way - going till board fifteen or sixteen before crossing the first time - and still only got maybe seventy-something thousand. Man, I had a bunch of providence that time around, huh?

I played a few games, but never got serious about it. It's not one I play much. (Good game and all, I just have too many games to choose from...)

Didn't I mention in the last isucamper-picked game competition that I like Ridley Scott movies?

And, come on, my cabinet is named the Infernolab.

And, before this post, look what my post count per day is.

It's destiny!   >:D
