Control Panel (Update!)
« on: July 14, 2003, 11:30:58 pm »
Im pretty close to finishing my Control Panel, all I need to do is finish designing the Overlay, and Wait for my T-Molding, then my Control Panel will be complete... but I wanted to show off the CP as it is until then...

The Black covering is not Laminate, it is in fact "Truck Bendliner" in a spray can ;)

Nice!
I've been thinking of using that bed-liner on a handful of different projects...
How easy was it to apply?
How long did it take to dry?
Do you like the way it looks/feels on the wood?

TIA...

How difficult is it to apply an even coat?

Maybe it's for old people so they can lean on it while they play. j/k

The bedliner took two coats to make even, so not too bad there.  Point of advice, spray multiple directions, i.e. across, up/down, diagnal, circle...

There is really not that much land between the spots, but I left room for "expansion".  I plan on (in the future) to add Drink holders on the sides (thats why there is 4" overhand on the sides), and a trackball will go in the middle eventually (read as: when I get the money), possibly a spinner.  But I also added space between area's so there is room to lean on (not just old people :) )  Also, I wanted a nice overhang so that the hinges (not installed yet) are hidden well.

Currently the board stays together with two strips of velcro... Holds actually quite well, doesnt slide around at all...

Heres a picture of the wiring and the velcro... :)

Something else I just noticed...
Those buttons seem to be a little far apart... (Maybe an extra 1/2" over what most people are doing)
Most layouts I've seen are at around 1.5" apart... What is your button spacing?
Is that comfortable for you?

Looks good! When do we get to see the whole cabinet (or is this just a CP box)?

The button spacing is 2"  This is because every Mortal Kombat and/or Street Fighter Cabinet Ive measured so far has a 2" Spacing for the buttons, also 2" on a lot of other Arcade Cabinets Ive measured, 2" seems to be more common then 1.5" in the arcades Ive visited, so I decided to go with whats more common.

I find it comfortable, but then I also have big hands ( Almost 8.5" from tip of middle finger to bottom of palm ).  :-\

I do like it, but I do have to agree it looks a little over sized, especially the space inbetween the buttons. If it works for you .. thats cool though.

I like the idea about velcro. I might do that, but i think my panel is gonna not move about anyway during play.

Get some friends, and slam all sticks would could be used simultaneously in the same directions. That should give you your maximum directional force to test with. Mine was fin unanchored with one person, and 2 people on most games. But as soon as 2 people were playing a game like a fighter, it would tilt up and back or down and forward depending on what was happening. Just remember that when the joystick hits the max direction, a lot of the force that was pushing is converted to upwards force, since half the stick is pushing up (sort of) on the bottom of the CP.

The Bedliner is made by Duplicolor and is availible at any Auto Retailer that carries duplicolor paints.  ( O Reilly Auto Parts for sure, thats where I got mine, and if they dont have, they CAN order, dont let them tell you differently ;)  )

And me and my brothers have tested the panel a lot, from MK3 to KI, from KoF to SFx2 (x3^6 x 10^9999)...

So far, no slipping, but hinges or some form or fashion will be installed eventually :)

I like the overlay, minus the turtle.  He is cool, but that bit of artwork is in a different style than the other ones...

I also just like the finish on your CP...looks really slick.

Leave Leonardo if you like.  Its your Machine.

You might be able to find another turtle that matches the rest of the art a bit better if thats what is bothering you.

Heres the Overlay Installed!!

Ill show a couple more pics in a few, Kinkos was the printer, colors arent washed out (as you can see) and the print was perfect in size...

So, all in all my experience with Kinko's is very good!  I just told them ahead of time that color and size were very important because they needed to be a specific size.  They wrote on the memo section that I wanted everything double checked and sure enough, everything was perfect :)

Hee hee, is it possible to show the print quality of 300dpi printing with a 100 dpi jpeg image?

That is sort of like the television advertisments where they try to show you how good of a picture their set has.  ;D

I don't get the reason you used the bedliner spray as an undercoat to your overlay?

2" spread for butons was the old Mortal Kombat spread. Capcom never used that spacing in their machines. They used to use 1 1/2" but now we use 1 5/8" spacing for the grid. Our button overlays have that pre-punched in there.

Maybe ya just have really big hands...

High quality work! And I think that you should use the characters that you like. I'm sure you'll play TMNT eventually on it, and it's such a fun group game.
