DIY VGA gender changer?

(1/2) > >>

Franco B:
I want to connect my 360 to a VGA monitor (not my work one, honest guv ;))

I have a 360 VGA cable but the monitor does not have a VGA port, it has a VGA lead hard wired to it. I was going to buy a F/F VGA gender changer like this to connect both cables to:

However, I have some 15 pin female d-subs. Would I be able to make my own by wiring up two of these?

I presume I would just wire pin1 on one d-sub to pin 1 on the other etc etc? Do all 15 pins need connecting?

Franco B:
Damn it, just realised the 15 pin d-subs I have are two rows (8+7) rather than the VGA connection (5+5+5)  :timebomb:

Looks like i may have to buy one. I don't think I can pick up some VGA d-subs locally.

Do you think [this] would work? (the F/F version.)

drventure:
I played with making my own VGA connectors at one point, but you have to get the joints soldered very well and keep the wires neat or you'll get interferance and a terrible picture.

The dsubs you have with 8/7 are serial port or old CGA adapters.

I probably have a 15pin vga adapter around here somewhere if you need it.

and...you're done.

Yes, you can make one yourself.  No, you don't have to be nearly as careful as described.  Over small distances, signal integrity isn't really much of an issue even at rather high resolutions.  But, you know what?  It's still a pain in the butt, and the result is a lot more fragile than the nicely molded commercially made ones.

I second that.  Shipping will be under 2 bucks and pretty quick.  Monoprice is awesome for little things like this.
