My pick for the new competition is Funny Mouse by Chuo Co. Ltd.

I won't be competing because I'm a TG/MARP competitor on this game, with the top score of 99,900 :) Since it's one of my favorites, I want to see how other people do on the game. INP's are definitely encouraged!

You are a mouse collecting food scattered around the maze, while trying to avoid the cats and snakes. You also have 5 bombs you can drop and set off later to destroy your enemies. When you collect all the food, you get a slot machine bonus level where you can earn 200-1500 extra points before going to the next level. I like the gameplay, and it has a neat (but repetitive) catchy background tune. A couple of tips, there's 3 little bridges over water that open up when you cross them. Use these to your advantage to drown the cats and snakes. Also, if you drown a snake, all the cats on the level will also die (and points for each will be awarded). There's also what look like pieces of cheese on the top corners that can be dropped on the enemies to kill them.

Competition Rules:

- You can only use the funnymou.zip ROM Funny Mouse, with default MAME settings, which I believe are 3 lives to start, extra life at 10K.

- No continues allowed for this competition (it doesn't allow them anyway, I just left this in)

- No MAME cheats! 

- Last day is Wednesday, September 9th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.
 
- High score wins (if tied, winner will be chosen by which player progressed further in the game).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

If you look at the MAWS link, it says 8-way. I'm not sure why it would be 8, being there's no diagonal moves on it. The KLOV link does say 4-way.

I'd never heard of it before I played it earlier this year in MAME, but I don't think it was very common. This one is a bootleg of Super Mouse, and if you look on KLOV, there's only 3 members that have either version, and they only have boards (2 have Funny Mouse, both in Europe, and one here in the US with a Super Mouse kit)

Oh, and yeah, it is a hard game :) The controls take some getting used to too, and he doesn't turn on a dime either.

oh yeah, you have to plan the moves ahead of time a little

it is a neat little game though, I'll have to play some more to get used to the controls

The game is ok despite the controls but the most annoying aspect is the music lol..sounds like water torture... :)

EDIT: The movements are in segments. You click in a direction 1x and it moves to the first obstacle or area where you can change direction.  If you move around with tapping motions (Tapping again at each junction) it seems more accurate.

I like the music on it, just wish it didn't repeat so much (i.e. they made the tune a little longer). I'm glad you're enjoying the game. I thought I was pretty fun. If you have WolfMAME 106, you can download my INP from MARP and watch, maybe get some tips. You can also grab my Super Mouse INP there too (which I also have the record on). It's pretty much the same game, except the scoring is alot lower (about 1/4 of Funny Mouse, and I got a little farther on level 5 with 1 less guy). The slot bonus screen is a tiny bit different, but the scoring on it is the same.

Ya I have been struggling with getting .inp files to run/record...ill download wolfmame 1.06 today and try again...as I understand you have to use the same version as the .inp was recorded in? Was hoping to see some Funny Mouse in action for that very reason...tips :)

Good job quarterstringer! You're getting there :) Looks like you blew yourself up eh? :P I do that occasionally too. Level 4 is a real pain if you make it that far due to the way the ladders and floors are set up. Once you get to 5, the board is just like level 1, except the cats run around alot faster and the cats and snakes spawn quicker.

Epyx, once you get wolfmame 106 installed, you put the INP files in the INP subdirectory (they'll probably be zipped when you download them, so you'll have to unzip them. If the directory isn't there, create it and put the INP files in it). I don't know if you'd use the GUI version or command line version (I always use the GUI if I can). In the GUI version, you go to File->Playback Input then it asks you which one you want to play back, select it and if you have the ROM's and everything, it should start playing it back. For the most part, you have to have the same version of MAME it was recorded with, although some versions might play a few versions prior, if nothing was changed in the recording process during the source code updates.

My 7-year old son is playing this game now. He likes it because it's like Bomberman with the bombs and detonator. CrazyKongFan, he said there are no snakes in the game, those things are dogs. I think I'm reaching my limit, those cats and dogs are moving pretty fast now.

I think the scoring stops at 99,900 and after that its just level repeats (1-4) but I could be wrong.

Either way, now that the game is growing on you I have my work cut out for me lol.

Nice work guys! Couple comments. It definitely goes over 100K. I just did a save state with my 99,900 game, just before I died and scored a few more points, pushing it over 100K. Also, they're definitely cats and snakes (most likely cobras). Notice on the bonus level, it's a snake with it's neck puffed out. The stuff on the bonus level is everything from the regular game, except the flag. The flag is actually left over from the previous game in the series, Macho Mouse (which I also have the record on ;D ), which has the same cast of characters. On Macho Mouse, you have to connect flags to fill in squares, similar to Amidar. It has the same music, the same bombs, and the same slot bonus levels. It doesn't have the water traps, but if you complete a segment with a cat or snake on it, they die, and there's also shortcuts thru the middle that the snakes take, and if you complete the whole square while a snake is inside that shortcut, it kills all the cats (similar to drowning the snake on Funny Mouse). If you look at this screenshot (don't mind the weird colors...they had the wrong color PROM on Wolfmame 106), the mouse heads are completed squares, there's a snake on one of the shortcuts, and Macho is completing a line segment (the ones with the dots) that'll kill the cat right next to him. And in that case...I think you realize...we are gunning for your score... ;)

This really is one of those games that is very deceptive at first glance.  At first you curse the movement (well I still do) and the difficulty but slowly game after game you peel away layer upon layer of strategy.  Baiting the cats and snakes is a huge part of the game and the AI between the two is so different.

The cats will charge you and make for easy baiting...the snakes on the other hand really have to home in on you so the approach in baiting them is a little different.  It's the role reversal where the mouse is the hunter that I really like in this game.

I know I'm not competing, but I'm still playing anyway :) I finally broke 100K in a regular game, but only beat my top score by 600 (ended up with 100,500)...panicked at the end and blew myself up with one of my bombs on level 4 :( But at least I know I can do 100K now. Had over 50K on my first guy and ended up losing 3 lives on level 3.

Then proceeded to melt down and quickly lose all 5 lives on level 4 and only ended up with 86K :angry: And to think I had visions of 120K...

I like to play these competitions without contribution as my scores don't reach anywhere near you guys. It's great to push myself on games I probably would never touch otherwise.

But man this is a tough game. I would never have got my 10 pence worth back in the day!

Only played a bit this weekend beat my high score but only by a few thousand...72,800.

I have a couple of days left but doubt it will happen...so no Black Tiger for next game unless I get into the "zone"...

Well, last day, which I bet some of you are glad of ;D Anyone going to beat quarterstringers score? I like the suggestion of Black Tiger, played that at the local mall arcade alot back in the late 80's, but we'll see what the winner chooses. Good luck in the last few hours!

Not for lack of trying...most of my games have followed the familiar pattern...40k with 1 man then I fall apart.  Only gotten to 70K+ two times...I will give it one more shot after work today before the deadline.

And actually CrazyKongFan...I like this game now...never tried it before this comp...hated it at first...now its one I will go back to. Thanks!

Congrats to quarterstringer, with a top score of 88,800. I see he's already picked the next game (sorry Epyx, it wasn't Black Tiger ;D ) I've never played Rampart, I'll have to give it a go. Glad a few of you enjoyed the game, as frustrating as it can be (of course, most games have some sort of frustration, or they'd be too easy)
