I like to watch/listen to the news in the morning.....and yeah, even I think the LCD behind the mirror is a waste.

You could start buying and Arduino (mega) and hookup all kind of shields that exist for it. To give you an idea of what is possible, get the Make-magazine book on it "Making things talk". For example it includes a cat-activated cat-cam, feeding mech and cat-blog.
