Homebrew Simpsons Marquee + Sideart + CPO
« on: August 20, 2009, 02:43:59 pm »
Hi.

I just wanted to share the preliminary work I've done so far on my Simpsons marquee. Everything is made in Illustrator CS4.

I need some creative critique of the marquee artwork, any kind comments are welcome.

The marquee is for this project: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=77183.msg804362#msg804362

Update: Thought i might as well throw in the rest of the artwork for some creative input  :)

I'd lose the red Simpsons logo in the upper left.  Also, you have plenty of space to increase the size of the font (which I'm not that crazy about).  Maybe lighten the rays in the background (make them a little transparent or whatever it's called).  I like the Homer pic though - it makes me laugh just looking at it.

Thanks javeryh, I appreciate the input.

I my self had a little doubt about the Simpsons logo so i think I'll loose it.

I have  attached an updated version.

Keep the comments coming. :)

I slightly disagree.

I do believe the rays should be brightened up, the dark dirty orange is too dull.

Also, I like the font, but the title looks as if it should be given a minor drop shadow as well.  It should pop-off the background.

I don't so much mind the simpsons logo, that's a personal preference.

I liked the original with the removal of the Simpson's logo and the additional drop shadow. However the rays I would change to more of a yellow, like the Simpson's characters.

I would also change the colours in the "arcade" to a yellow with a white stroke and a black outer stroke.

You are on the right lines though. I like the overall concept!

I agree on the rays. And i probably shouldn't make them too light since it's gonna be backlit.

Not quite sure i understand. I've attached an update with a modified coloring of the word "ARCADE"

You nailed it, but maybe the "arcade" should actually be in another colour though looking at it. A bit too much yellow.

Maybe even keep the "arcade" red like the original but with the white and black strokes like you have done on the yellow on.

Are you using any red buttons or accessories?

Overall it is looking very very good!  :applaud: I like the yellow rays a lot more. ;D

Have you tried a gradient on the rays? Like yellow into white or transparent? Just to see what it would look like.

Just out of curiosity, how did you make the 3D text? Is Homer a vector? Are you making this available for download?

Hi, thanks for the great input.

Yeah maybe too yellow (even for a simpsons cab :D).

Maybe even keep the "arcade" red like the original but with the white and black strokes like you have done on the yellow on.

See attached picture.

Are you using any red buttons or accessories?

Yes the balltops on the joystics are red.

Overall it is looking very very good!  :applaud: I like the yellow rays a lot more. ;D

Thanks ;D

Have you tried a gradient on the rays? Like yellow into white or transparent? Just to see what it would look like.

Yes see attached picture. (can't quite figure out which i like best, gradient or no gradient)

Just out of curiosity, how did you make the 3D text? Is Homer a vector? Are you making this available for download?

I simply followed this tutorial:

http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/How-to-Make-a-Cartoon-Style-Cereal-Box-Logo-in-Adobe-Illustrator-CS3/43442

And yes Homer is a vector and it will be will be available for download.

Love the attention to detail HarumaN! ;)

I personally like to solid yellow after seeing the gradient. Maybe even try the gradient with a yellow to a softer yellow instead of yellow to white, just to ease it up?

AWESOME!

Yeah, I think we are getting close to something that might work here

I have attached the latest version.

The rays now have a slight gradient, the speech bubble got a shadow and i corrected the spelling (Doh! how could i miss that  ;))

Once again, thanks for all the usefull input.

There's one thing that is just sitting weird with me. I feel like my eyes want to see a radial color gradient on the rays as the color transitions from Homer yellow to lemon yellow. But where the rays converge it is radial, and then the Homer yellow continues all the way to the side where Homer is, making it kind of a oval gradient. This just catches my eye a bit.

But it's looking great, I really like it.

You are right.

The reason is quite simple. I've applied an radial gradient to each of the individual rays. The gradient starts where all the rays meet and ends where the single ray ends. And since the rays don't have the same length the overall gradient appear oval.

I'll try changing it to see the difference.

Update: Thought i might as well throw in the rest of the artwork for some creative input  :)

The sideart is based on the original Simpson sideart. I just removed the cat, added a couple of clouds and gave the background a slight gradient.

Get rid of the characters on the CP. The overall design is nice with the rays, etc. The characters just make it busy.

I would also:

1. Move the doughnut to surround the trackball
2. Make the halo flat, not 3D to match the marquee
3. Make a button halo for the admin, p1, p2 section

Thanks once again for all the constructive input.

I have attached an updated CPO where i have implemented your suggestions. And guess what, I kind of like it  ;D

There are two versions, one with Homer going at the donut and one without Homer

That is SOOOO much better! That is looking really cool! Great work!

I actually like both tbh. The Homer one is kinda funny! But the plain one is clean looking.

Make sure you make the yellow Halo a Simpson's yellow.

Also, stick the blue rays on the side art, just to see what that looks like against the CP.

Nice! just make sure all the yellow is the Simpson's yellow i.e. the Simpson's logo and the surrounds, etc. the sideart Simpson logo is like an orangy mustard sort of colour.

Great work though! Are you making this availbale for DL?

I'll make sure to synchronize all the yellow.

The yellow you see running around the sideart is actually not part of the graphics but is used to illustrate the yellow T-moulding.

Great work though! Are you making this availbale for DL?

Yes, all the artwork will be available as soon as I'm done with it. Need to make some graphics for the front end.

Hi

I made a test print at work of the sideart and the marquee.  I've attached them to the cabinet just to get a feel of how it's going to look. Man i can't wait to get this all done!!.

I feel that I'm finally done with all the artwork  ;D.  I'll see if i can't find a way to distribute the files (if there is any interest in them). The .ai files take up 75MB in total (Marquee, Sideart, CPO and FE graphics).

And once again thanks to everyone for all the creative input .
