Just curious - MAME vs. collecting - one or both?

Yea saw that....very tragic. Gotta really feel for that guy.

I like MAME for horizontal games, since I have mine set up horizontal, but I'm not happy with vertical games on it. Maybe I'll put a rotating rig in it someday.

27" monitors rock. No need to rotate.
Back on topic though, heres my take. I love my Mame cabinet but yes I have considered the collection route. And someday I will get my hands on the real thing but they will have to be games that dont play well in Mame (at least on my setup), like Operation Wolf, or Tron, or whatever. I actually have a decent amount of space but I cant see purchasing a game that already plays well in Mame.
So my opinion is this....Mame is great but collecting has its place too. And for me that place is games that dont play well in Mame.

Wow - I had no idea this happened until I saw this - very tragic and I can only say that I feel for the family and am glad they are all OK.
The games can be replaced... but man - that place was amazing!

My MAME cab has a modular control panel, so I do play the games with the original controls. For the most part, I find the MAME cab to be as enjoyable as the real cabinet. Donkey Kong is an exception to that. Even though I have a Nintendo stick on the MAME cab, I still enjoy playing my dedicated DK more. I think it is because I played it so much when I was younger. Tempest is way better on the dedicated cab, but I think vector MAME might even it out a bit. I may try to build a vector MAME cab someday if I can find a cheap x-y monitor. I think, with accurate controls, most games are just as good in MAME. I like 2-player fighting games at least as well, because my MAME cab has a larger panel so we can spread out a bit. I have 9 dedicated cabs now, and I still play on the MAME cab more than most of them. The only dedicated ones I play regularly are DK and Tempest. The others are more fun when people are over.
If you have room for one cab, I would suggest MAME. If only 2 spots, I would go with MAME and a pinball machine. Add dedicated cabinets, more pinball, and maybe even more MAME cabs as budget and space permit. ;D
