Just curious - MAME vs. collecting - one or both?
Flake:
Man there seems to be a lot of people puking all over MAME here. Seems you dont appreciate what you really have. I bet if you didnt have MAME you would all be whining about not having enough room to house all your dedicated machines so you would love to have "one that plays them all".
Sheesh......... :dizzy:

But we do, so we can have an opinion on it.
I LOVE MAME.
If I had the room for dedicated machines, I'd have both.
MAME vs Original? Gimme original, but I'll take MAME for now.

You're missing the point. I used to have your same viewpoint.
I love MAME, and appreciate it immensely. I love it on my desktop PC at home and work. I love it in a cabinet with a sweet front end. But... it is not the same and my brain - through no fault of my own - can no longer block out the fact there is a computer in there.

I agree 100%
Mame gives you a opportunity to also see games you might not have ever gotten the chance to but there is something about the cabs and the art that goes along with the game that mame just cant replace (not that is was intended to).
I grew up with sea wolf in 1976 and I recently saw one on ebay and if it was closer I would have got it just for the art and the uniqueness of the cab I can still play the game thanks to mame but eh its not the same.

The problem with the "one machine that plays them all" idea is that most people have a favorite game or games that aren't ideal for a typical MAME cabinet; and to try to make it more suitable for those games would result in a monstrosity of a cabinet.
My ideal gameroom would consist of about 10 dedicated machines, which would cover pretty much all of my favorites, and then two Dynamo cabinets; a 25" HS-5 with the monitor horizontally oriented and a 19" HS-2 with the monitor vertically oriented; both wired for JAMMA with a MAME PC and J-Pac in them. That way I could play most of the rest of the games that aren't necessarily favorites of mine, but are fun to play every now and then; or that guests want to play. I could also swap in real JAMMA boards if I felt the need.
