Just curious - MAME vs. collecting - one or both?

I have been struggling with the same feelings recently.  I'm not even done my first MAME cab (though it's been in playable form for nearly a year) and I'm passively looking for a few original cabinets.  And I have my next couple MAME projects brewing in the back of my head.

When I first started I always wanted a dedicated Simpson's, but they were too much money. Then I found out about MAME. I have a MAME and love it. But I have recently go into collecting my favs. I tell you its not only awesome having a dedicated cab being able to stare at them and play them, but some even have that old arcade smell that takes you back. (the smell when restoring them - is it just me or anyone else like that smell?) I have a 2p and 4p MAME and 5 dedicated.

I love my dedicated cabs and my collection will continue to grow once we get our next house and I have a dedicated game room, but I could never do without my MAME cab. It'll be great hosting an arcade party when I have 1 or 2 dozen arcade games!

Next thing you know, it's a few of your favorite classic's and a garage full of projects

This is exactly how it went for me... I built a horizontal MAME cab, then wanted a cab for just vert games so did a second MAME, then a bartop, then started buying "real" games. I'm now at 7, and always looking for other stuff.

If I had to go  back to only one machine, I wouldn't have to think about it for more than a second. It would be my first horizontal MAME cab, which is still the most "do-it-all" machine of the bunch.

I think both of you guys hit the nail on the head for me.

You have also nailed it - restoring for me is a lot of fun, and I've found it to be more rewarding from an "end-run" perspective than the MAME cabinet was (although it was very rewarding as well).  My current MAME project is a DK cabinet (kit) that I'm going to put a rotating LCD in so it can play both horizontal and vertical games correctly.  Despite the coolness of that, though, it still doesn't excite me like my busted-up old Donkey Kong does.... Yeah, I think it's just a natural progression.

It has brought me to the point where I want to build a dedicated gameroom - blacklights and all.... this is highly addicting. ;)

Oh yeah - thanks CheffoJeffo - I've got ya back! ;)

If you set up mame in a dedicated cabinet... with real arcade monitor... a person
might never be able to tell it wasnt the real deal.

The fault generally lies with the cabinet builder rather than Mame itself.
