Just curious - MAME vs. collecting - one or both?

Hey everyone,

I've got a question I want to toss out and see what the community comes back with.  When I first started here on BYOAC, I was huge into the MAME idea and the lure of building a cabinet, etc.  I went through all of that, and enjoy it immensely.    In fact, I'm working on building my second MAME cabinet as we speak.  However, over the past year, I've become increasingly interested in collecting the real dedicated uprights and have been adding more and more of them to my collection and have come to the realization that as good as MAME is, there just is no substitute for playing the game on the real hardware using the original controls.

There's just something about the original cabinet, the artwork, the sounds, the style, etc. that drives me towards collecting more and MAME less.  I have all the respect for MAME - don't get me wrong - but I'm just curious if any others out there have found (or are finding) themselves in this situation and with this perspective.

I personally know that I cannot play Donkey Kong on MAME and enjoy it the same way as I do on my bona-fide Nintendo upright.  It doesn't sound the same or play the same to me.  I know it's running the original code, but it just feels like it loses something in the process.  Admittenly, it will be nearly impossible to give up MAME alltogether though - there's just no (economical or otherwise) way to own everything that I treasure from my childhood, so MAME provides a good way to fill in the gaps between what I can find and what I cannot find (in a dedicated upright), but still the difference is there.

I'm probably waxing a bit philosophical, but to me there is a difference... anyone else want to weigh in with comments/insights?

I'm not meaning to start a flame war or anything - I just want some good discussion around the "progression" within the hobby.  Maybe some people go the other way.... if so, I'd love to discuss that as well.

Thanks!

I say if you have the room, and the money, then there's no substitute for the real thing.
However, if you're like me, there's barely room for 1 mame cab, and there is no way I could ever justify the cost of getting all of the originals. Not to mention my wife would divorce me.

MAME is the best (only) alternative.

Also, I don't see how one person could gather the number and diversity of real cabs that are available in MAME. Or even come close.

I'm a MAME self-loather. I only have a MAME cab and I hate that. I wish I had the room and the money to own the originals. Compared to the real thing, MAME can kiss my butt.

Wow that seems a bit short sighted.  I think Mame accurately runs most the games I play....which are for the most part "classics".  So if it runs those games accurately then why is it "bad".  Are you pissy about your joystick selection or something?

After the loss of over 70 machines locally to a fire, I'm in a bad mood.
