My pick for the new competition is KLAX by Atari.

After a full year of competitions, I don't think we've had a puzzle type game yet.
I won't be competing because my kids said I've been playing video games too much.
They have a Wii, but they still want to play 20-30 year old arcade games. :applaud:
Also because I am a MARP competitor on this game. My high score is 2,201,269.

My strategy for the game is to try to make the sandwich. See the screenshot below.
The last tile that I drop is the green one in the center and that starts a chain reaction.
That will give you about 260,000 points, then tap the button real fast as it scores and
you will get another 40,000+ points. I try to do this on every level.

Competition Rules:

- You can only use the klax.zip ROM Klax (set 1), with default MAME settings.

- You can start on any wave - 1, 6, or 11.

- Klax allows continues, so no continues allowed for this competition. One credit only.

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Wednesday, August 26th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins (if tied, winner will be chosen by which player progressed further in the game).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Game tips can be found hereKLOV entryMAWS entry.

Never played this one before, but I figured I could at least get the scores started:

First time I've played or even really seen this game. Wasn't too hard till wave five. Then, like many games, it ramps up slightly discouragingly.

Anyone know of a Youtube or other video that shows the Big Sandwhich being done? What I don't get is how that middle piece doesn't set off the piece complete as technically its a horizontal row of5 isn't it when you join it (before even adding the top 2)?

I can do half an X but can't do a full or the Big Sandwhich...grrr

The middle piece does set off a 5 horizontal and 3 vertical of greens. Apparently I took the screenshot just before it happened. Here's a screenshot from a different game showing the "T" disappearing.

If you want to see a MARP recording, here's my Klax high score.

Awesome, thanks quarterstringer...taking a look now.

EDIT: Amazing stuff...I get it now...the SS from above was taken right at the joining. Up to 357K with this technique but I have to learn to adapt after level 5...5 really ramps up hard then it backs off again...great game.

OK, here's my first entry, using the "sandwich" technique as you guys describe it ;D 843094
I tried to do the big X warp on level 11, but didn't get the wild card tile, so the game ended there. I'll include the .INP, recorded with Wolfmame 106, but I couldn't get it to play back for some reason. It would start ok, then do stuff I didn't do in the game and end early.

CrazyKongFan - MARP recommends recording the Klax INP with sound disabled, and then it should play back correctly.

Thanks for the tip quarterstringer. I did see that suggestion there after I recorded. I know I can get higher, as I could get that high starting at level 11 and doing the big X warp, and that didn't include doing the sandwich trick on earlier boards (but I did do it on the next one after warping, BITD)

Many, many, many, many aborted games later, here's my latest.   I think that's about as fast as my reflexes go, though, so if someone tops a million, I'll be out for sure.

Well, it's not a million, but it's close ;D 954575. INP with Wolfmame 106 with sound off. It did replay for me this time, although even with the sound disabled, some don't want to behave.

I played this game originally on the genesis and after a ton of practice, I completed it, all 100 levels.

I don't think, even after all these years, that I could play this game competitively again.  It took a little bit of life out of me.

@CrazyKongFan

Question for you...does the sandwich technique form the basis of strategy for every level or do you just attempt it on slower point levels?

I tend to find I get greedy by trying it on every level and then I get burned quickly...Like the 40 tile limit level it seems almost impossible to pull off?

I can usually get the 4 vertical colums of 4-tile Klaxes, sometimes with a center T to trigger it (if I'm lucky) on the 1st 2 boards, and try to get as much of it as I can on the diagonal and point waves (3 and 4). I usually just try to survive on the tile wave ;D I so far haven't been able to make the big X on board 11 (skipping to it if I can clear 5), if I can, I'll bust the score wide open :P

Epyx - Don't try to spend so much time on building the sandwich on the first five levels. The more time you take, the harder it is on the following levels. CrazyKongFan is right that whoever can make the big X on level 11 will have a huge score. The big X is will give you about 700,000 points.

Try the sandwich on the 1st and 2nd levels, do the diagonals quickly, try a sandwich on the 4th level, do the 40 tiles quickly. Then go to wave 11 and try to build the big X, using the wild card as the last tile dropped in the center. If you can do this your score should be 1.3 million plus. You can practice the big X by starting on level 11

Thanks Quarterstringer, Ill try that! :)

EDIT: Just so I get this straight...the more time you spend on a level the more difficult subsequent levels become?

On the tips page, there's a link in my first post, it says-
"Take too long on a level and the next screen starts with faster tiles"

So if you can do the big X on wave 11, it would be pretty easy to get a million.
Build the sandwich on the first wave and get 300,000
Finish off the next 4 waves as fast as you can.
Go to wave 11 and do the big X for another 700,000.

Well I made the Big X but only by starting on level 11...hehe

I can see how getting to 11 after getting 1 BS and then the X would throw you well over 1 mill though.

Read 'em and weep! ;D Finally broke the million point mark, twice. Once with about 1.2M and another over 1.5M (1567265 to be exact). First one I did with sound, and I can't get it to play back, but the 1.5M does play back for me, hopefully it will for others too, as I may submit it to TG (it'll only be 3rd, behind quarterstringer and one other score) but what the heck :) I did what quarterstringer suggested, sandwich trick on 1, 2 and 4, just did the diagonals on 3 (with a 5 tile one), did a partial sandwich on 5, the big X on 11 (with a big mistake that I luckily recovered from). Did 2 5-tile diagonals for the X, plus a 3 tile horizontal in the middle. Level 12 got ugly pretty quickly and it ended there ;) As usual, INP was done on WolfMAME 106 with sound disabled. Can anyone else with 106 download it and see if it works for them? It usually replays ok on my laptop, but it didn't on my desktop.

Agreed, definitely a new game that I play a few rounds of daily.  I was thinking of starting a champions thread that lists each game of the month and the current high score holder...that way even though that game's time in the spotlight has ended, people can try to dethrone the standing champs and throw down the glove for a comeback...

I like that dethrone the standing champs idea. There's at least 2 other past games that I didn't even get an opportunity to put on the gloves.

Yeah, I'm still playing a game now and then, and I've watched yours, but as Epyx said, I think the planets will all have to align perfectly to have a chance. I thought about not jumping ahead to level 11, and try those 5 screens and do a few more sandwich tricks, but haven't had any success. (I think I'd lose 100K and 1 drop by not jumping ahead to 11, but one sandwich would more than make up for that)

I will start a thread in about 30 mins with a table listing current champ/game/high score and date...we can then just update as champ is dethroned/wins back title.  I know I would love to get a shot at some of the earlier games and throw the glove down.

In the past, I floated the idea of having a seperate area in the forum for high score stuff.  Each game could have it's own thread.  Interest wasn't high, but it'd certainly get me playing more.  I'd love to take a crack at shinobi.

Yeah I might take a shot at shinobi.  I can get 600K+, but I couldn't justify necroing the original thread.

In the past, I floated the idea of having a seperate area in the forum for high score stuff.  Each game could have it's own thread.  Interest wasn't high, but it'd certainly get me playing more.  I'd love to take a crack at shinobi.

Before I started the comps, I did the same, with the same response.

I think Destructor is the champ, and he's not even the best of the misfits.
