I would have to agree..lots of films have had better success after brief lives in theaters....insert any Bruce Campbell title here. I think part of the problem with the original Tron, was it was kinda ahead of it's time, they attempted to try to bring the general public into it with the tease of "video games", but even then only appealed to "Arcadians". As for the relevance to a "pop culture bubble"...they just want a piece of what Marvel, DC, the Tolkien Estate, Hasbro, or any other "Pop Culture" business is doing at the moment, I can't blame them in the slightest. Hell, Disney themselves are "going back" and releasing the first 2d animation film in over 10 years.. I personally loved the film..it was the movie that got me hooked into 3d animation, and the reason I am finally following my aspirations to become a 3d animator now. Don't worry Sharidan, your parachute pants and 20 zipper denim jacket will come back too. ;D (Yes, I am kidding...I wore the hell outa those back in the day!!) (Edit for spelling) |

I wouldnt even bother watching Transformers. What a joke. The old cartoon series was Ok.. but thats about it. The toys were fun though. Tron was a little slow moving. However, there is great genius throughout the whole thing. Little subtle things like how things in the pc world translated into physical counterparts. Actual electrical / pc terminology etc. Concepts like energy being liquid... and programs (humans) needing that to perform. Life and death vs Deletions (de-rez), electical time vs human time. Concept of teleportation - Into the pc as an AI program representation. Purely Brilliant! Impossible at the time, and even now... but its getting scary how close to reality its really getting. (aka - Matrix) Concepts of computer games being reality. Consciousness on another level. Religious concepts (god / users). Mild humor such as the "BIT". (which again brilliantly responded with only yes or no (1 or 0) ) The coolest? concept ever: Light Cycles scene. Great game concepts like Tron Discs, and even the Recognizer tank game. Great visual effects - use of glowing suits to represent the energy flowing within the program itself. Low energy = life fading as brightness dims... The tank game scene in which the guy asks if he could merge with that type of memory. Just amazingly well thought out. Many of Todays movies do not have a glimpse of depth like this. They are all explosions and slow motion scenes. The story is lame, and not well thought out... if there even is one at all. There are no subtle intricacies, nor a real reason to ever watch them again. Tron is a movie that appears to be only appreciated by people who have an inner understanding of computers / electronics... as well as apreciates a great actor like Jeff Bridges... who has that positive, funny, quirky vibe about him. Youd have to pay me to watch a movie like Transformers. (horrible CGI, blury action, no story, kiddie humor & intelligence...) Yet heck... Id go to the theater and pay to see the original Tron again. Most especially if it was transformed into full stereoscopic 3d on an Imax screen. |

....more simply, Tron was a well-executed, light SF flick. It's not a Pac-Man, nor is it in any way an Ooliboochu. It's like a Donkey Kong Jr. |

I think you need to be in the right mood to sit down and watch Tron. It definitely has an appeal about it and was hugely hyped on its release. Largely down to them advertising it as all computer generated which wasn't exactly true. The light cycles play a big part albeit a small portion of the film which most enjoy it for. The first portion is slow moving and at the time most of the general public wouldn't have had a clue what was what haha Have been looking forward to the sequel for years since it was first rumoured. I think the timing is right and cgi will nil it now compared to if it was released in the 90's. Daft Punk are doing the soundtrack which should be very good. |
