which rom set?

In the UK we only got the JP romset (well that's the only one I ever saw in arcades pubs etc.) and it wasn't till 18+ years later that I ever knew about the different US version. And of course if DK is your game then you have to play the US romset version 1. I had to get used to a whole new game practically. US version is way harder than the JP version. (Though you rack up higher scores on the US version due to the extra screens to play through)

I think dkong (US set 1) is the parent set, no?
but your right, if you grew up playing a different version it's worth finding out which rom set it is so you can play it and see the differences or just experience it the way it was when you were a kid

Usually, Set 1 will be what you want. If it is listed by revision instead of set, the latest revision is probably best since it would have the most bug fixes. There are most likely exceptions, but that should give you a good start.
