Bump.  Still looking for some help.
Thanks

Under MAME display settings in MALA, do you have hardware stretching enabled? Sounds like your games are defaulting to their true resolutions.

Also, did you verify that your vid card drivers are installed.

Mame (.105) is opening and running strong, but only using about half of the screen.  So for vertical games it is still leaving major real estate at the top and bottom.  I have tried enabling and disabling artwork and playing with the config.ini to the degree that I am comfortable.

Any suggestions?

Okay. on my setup, anyway, ive got a makvision hybrid monitor you can use it with any medium resolution jamma board or you can also hook it up to vga.

Ive also been using mame 0.95 for 7 years now and counting.

but somewhere on your program you need to select an option similar to the "Scale resolutions to fit" option in mame 32.

Also if you are only playing older 2d games, turn off direct 3d and triple buffering the first option will only slow you down and the second option tries and fails to make 2d games look 3d, and thus, not authentic.

strangely though for me anyway, Cruisin usa and Gauntlet legends run and look fine with direct 3d turned off.

i am running an nvidia card. One sweet option is that later on you can force it into 640X480 with stock nvidia drivers.
Oh, also, if you have a hybrid at least with makvision anyway, you will have to plug in a regular pc monitor to install windows, and it will automatically boot up in 800X600. after your done installing windows, reboot, and then install your nvidia driver, Reboot again, and then go to the nvidia icon and force your pc into 640X480.

the makvision is incapable of anything over 640X480, since it was also designed to be used with older jamma boards.

anyway i hope some of this helps.

Thanks guys.  I don't know how, I don't know why, but it magically fixed itself.  No idea.
