Next up is the side scrolling fencing sim, Gladiator

"Travel with the Great Gurianos as he battles his way through 4 stages against some of the toughest and most feared warriors ever to be found anywhere."

Competition Rules:

- You can only use gladiatr.zip, with default MAME settings which are:

Lives: 3
Bonus Life: Only at 100000
Difficulty: Easy
1 credit, no continues
no cheats!

- Last day is Tuesday, June 30th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins (if tied, winner will be chosen by which player progressed further in the game).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

I don't know how my high score ranks in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pretty proud of it at 300,700.  I won't participate in this competition until someone surpasses that score.

Also, I'm going to put up a small prize for this competition.  The winner of this competition will receive, from me, a copy of the official feature film adaptation of this game on their choice of DVD (3 disc extended cut) or Blu-ray disc (which actually won't be released until September so the winner will have to take a rain check... and possibly remind me when September rolls around).

Good luck!

Good one!
I used to play this occasionally back in the day, but I always sucked at it.  Good pick though!

Neat little game, but a keyboard doesn't lend itseld well at all. I'll try it this evening on the Narc MAME.

I can't play arcade games on keyboard at all. I mean, I can, but not in a serious manner. (Definitely not for a competition)

Is there a bonus if we can get a screen cap of the chick topless? (It's hard to do, but if you can knock off all her top armor, she will be topless, and surrenders in shame. Though I think this was only in certain versions of the game. Might have been cleaned up for the US version).

A bonus?  Hmm.

Ok.  If you get a screen cap of this, I'll send you a picture of me topless.

It's the clone Ohgon no Siro that has the topless graphic.  Her torso is used as a test sprite if you start the game in service mode.

I've hated this game since I first played it in the arcade, but I don't want to see this slip off the front page.  ;D

Pa zonk!  Man, you just tanked this thread.  What's everybody going to do for the next two weeks?

Here's a tip.  After beating some bosses, if you press down while walking past them, you can pick up their weapons (like the guy with the big mace on level 2).

When and how do I enable the shield? I just noticed on attract mode of the game! C'mon pointers, let's detrone jason while we still can!

I wish I had more tips to give, but I don't really have any good ones.  For the fireball guy, I get right up on him and press one of the 3 buttons as fast as I can.  I try to watch where the fireballs go and block them, but it's usually a race between me breaking through his shield before he sneaks enough fireballs by me to kill me.

It just occured to me, this game is rather backward in graphics scheme and all given it came out in 2000.

Hahahahaah, no no no. There is a game with that name that was released in '86. Taint this game, though. This was released with the movie - in thousand, yo.

I used to play it at a shop near my primary school in the late 80s.  MAME lists it as 1986.  The title screen of the game says (C) 1986 Taito America Corp.

My money's on 1986.  ;)

I think it has to be the special gold shield, not the regular silver one.

I think Ummon is just perpetuating my joke about the game being an adaptation of the movie.

Really though, the game could be from 1986 and the movie adaptation much later in 2000 (in the joke) and that would still make sense.

I'm doing "final push" myself, so far I peeked at around 150,000. I managed to finally get past the guy with the mace just to be struck by the first brick or something, right on the next level :(

I actually fired it up last night for the first time in a few months and hit 210,000.

OH. ---fudgesicle--- me, I swear I klov'd it and it said 2000. I think I confused it with Gladiator 1984, as I saw it in the list when I went to find the rom for this one. Anyways, we're on the home stretch, baby!  My god it's been a long two weeks...unless you count the one before that, too. (Heheheh)

I know this is my first post so I'll say a little something first:

I built my arcade machine about 2 years ago with much help from all the posts here, there's almost no question i had that wasn't answered somewhere in this cavern of information, so thank you byoac members!

Now, on to the competition, here is my score, (254,200 hope i posted the pic right). I got this just after jasonbar got his winning score, and i was determined to beat him, 10 days later and it seems i have failed. I know the competition is over so I'm only posting this to hopefully bump bender (love your newest creation btw, show more pics!) out of 2nd place!

Anyway, congrats Jason and enjoy the dvd!

Looks like Jason wins (I'll PM you about your prize).  Not sure about the ruling on second place.  Technically Hewskie's post came after the competition was over.  Should we count it?

Jay, can't wait for the next thread.  I'm having competition withdrawl.

I was the first person to list the 2nd place winner, but the only reason I did it was because I chose the game and I came 1st, so 2nd place won that one ;D I guess everyone else just decided to list 2nd place after that.

Hewskie made it in with 23 minutes left, so second is his (midnight PDT is 2am on this forum)

This is the BYOAC forum not Minnesota  ;D

Congrats to Jason and Hewskie :applaud: :applaud:

PS: I love the second place idea cause it's my only chance to post on here, so it makes the competition more fun IMHO

If Hewskie had posted a first place score, I wouldn't have accepted it (if it were my competition thread). If anyone comes in with a last minute post, wins, and it's their first post here.....I don't think that's cool. Maybe it's just me....

Howdy-

Thanks--I had a good run on my 1st session.  I played it a bit more a few days later & could top 240k or so.  I think I do better when I'm running on instinct & adrenaline instead of following patterns & getting impatient/lazy/complacent/know-it-all...

I'm *completely* swamped these days but will do my best to get a new competition post up ASAP.  Thanks for your patience.

PS--that fireball-blowing guy was generally nice to me--I think there's a sweet spot distance you can stand from him & he'll go easy on the fireballs...

I was the first person to list the 2nd place winner, but the only reason I did it was because I chose the game and I came 1st, so 2nd place won that one ;D I guess everyone else just decided to list 2nd place after that.

I was considering going back through the other threads so I could list all the second place finishers... but then I didn't.
