Why is the world overflowing with --bags of cream-filled twinkies--?

I'm looking for a furnished place to rent for 3 months and it seems there are more scams on Craig's List than legit ads.  It's so difficult to tell on some of them that I have to pass them over just in case.  People suck.

Craigslist is approaching useless status faster than myspace.

Where are you looking to rent?  In France?  You'll need to hire someone local to do it for you.  Trying to arrange a rental internationally via craigslist may as well mark you instantly.

I'm not saying there aren't honest people doing it... but good effin luck finding them among the scammers.

And is their place on another continent?

shmokes:
Chad is more or less right.  The problem is, through the agencies not only do I have to pay a hefty agency fee (think ~$1000), but the places rent for $200-$1000 per month higher than on Craig's List.  I had one that seemed pretty legit, but I just traced the origin IP in the header of his email and it's coming from Brussels.  It's not entirely impossible that a guy in Brussels would be renting out a place he had in Paris, but it definitely casts a shadow on it.  I've found one via Craig's List that definitely is not a scam cos the girl replied to my inquiry with, "I would be happy to rent the room to you.  Give me a call when you are in Paris and you can come see it."  But that does me no good, cos I start work the day after I arrive.  I really need to have my ducks lined up before I get there.

It's so frustrating.  People seriously suck.  They ruin the world.

p.s.  I actually have an acquaintance living there whom I would trust to set everything up for me, but she was just a roommate for the two weeks I was there a couple years ago.  So if I find something through Craig's List that seems totally legit I'll get in contact with this girl to make all the financial arrangements face-to-face.  But we're not good enough friends for me to ask her to truck around the city on a wild goose chase of apartments that do not exist.
