X-Arcade CPO Templates and Art
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:13:17 pm »
Let's start a collection thread for X-Arcade Control Panel Overlays. I don't know about you, but I think that big "X" is kind of boring.

I just finished a Tron Themed CPO for my X-Arcade Two Player (Sorry, it's not a for a Tank Stick).
Attached is the Illustrator file (sans rasturized graphics for the sake of file size). The button and joystick layout is pretty excact, but allow some bleed area for the edges.

Feel free to use it as a template for more X-Arcade CPO art.

Cheers,

GoddTodd

Goddtodd....what exactly material did you use? Is it just vinyl or did you overlay it with pexi? ( how do you protect it?)

That looks very, very cool! I have always wanted to customize my X-Arcade and yours looks great! One thing though, the spinner placement looks very uncomfortable, even though it looks nice.
You could sell these cpo's no sweat!

The zip file is probably fine. See the thread below as to why you can't download it.

I am curious how you apply an overlay to the X-Arcade. I am assuming you have to strip off the stock one but how do you go about doing that?

GoddTodd, would know more since he did it...but I would agree with you billpa...strip the laminate...but at the same time, there is little texture on the laminate...perhaps the adhesive would stick ....but I really don't know...

Anyone care to make a Tankstick template  ;D Being away from home (and photoshop) I cannot make one...yet! We could make this thread HUGE with custom X-arcade CPs... im sure alot of noobs (including myself) started off with an xarcade before building a sick custom CP... and like "GoddTodd " posted that X is freakin boring! (sick Tron overlay BTW)

EDIT: Details on stripping the old overlay would be awesome too..!

I told myself that i would try and make one when i get the leds to place in my x-arcade tankstick...
But do we really need to strip the existing overlay?  Seems to me too much work and then 2 you would probley have to change out the t-molding...I figured using adhesive vinyl would do the trick...

I do agree, this could be a HUGE thread....

Anyone get tankstick dimensions yet??? AND.... do you HAVE to remove the "original" ugly X arcade overlay first?? If so what is the best way to do it?

I can get you tankstick dimensions. I recently gutted my tankstick and built a new CP but used the Tankstick as a template for the p1/p2 controls.  Ill try to get these done up tonight.

I did some modifications that I'm going to use on my own cab. Some of the art would work for the trankstick.
Let me know what you guys think.

Thank you GoddTodd for the original file.

Also attached is my CpWizard layout to get an idea of the buttons, trackball and spinner placement.

I am an arcade noob, building my first cabinet. I purchased an X-Arcade Two Player control panel. I've seen the hate for the x-arcade, and am still perfectly happy owning one. As much as I love the CP, I too want to remove the X, and put on a custom overlay. More support for this would be great!.

Does anyone have .ai Control Panel layouts for the Two Player X-Arcade? They would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :applaud:

Perhaps a stupid question... but on the template there is a button to the left of the P1 and P2 buttons. What the heck is this? My X-Arcade Dual Joystick has 8 buttons per player, 2 pinball buttons, and P1 P2 start. That button doesn't exist.

Also, since we're on the topic of stupid questions, am I fine to use Photoshop to attempt to make an overlay, or will I need to install Illustrator? Thanks everyone.

I think that button you are refering to is the spinner that the guy installed on his X-arcade...just disregard it...

You can use both...really it depends on what you want...Raster(photoshop) Vector (Illustrator)...Photoshop is fine...

Yup, the extra button is for a spinner knob that I added to it.
You can delete that layer.
The file works best in Illustrator but you could import it into photoshop.

PS, this is for the two player controller, not the tankstick.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback guys. :applaud:

I will have to get Illustrator installed. I am new to all of this raster/vectoring stuff, however I have some (albeit basic) experience with Photoshop. I am eager to get working on my artwork, I am currently undecided which way to go. I have been experimenting with VectorMagic a fair bit, and this is an excellent program for this use. I will be sure to post my results if I come up with anything worthy.

Thanks again.

I'm working on a project that will have four x-arcade solo's which will all have custom cpo in four different themes (a red, green, blue, and yellow theme with matching sticks and buttons) and I needed a template.  I used a high res photo of the solo taken head on with a tapemeasure to create the template and line things up as accurately as I could.  The holes in the template are the actual holes in the control panel so leave some space around the holes if you don't want anything to get covered by the buttons when they are installed.

Edit: Solo template is attached, as accurate as I could get it.  SVG is for inkscape, EPS is for other vector programs.

I should mention that this template is for the new solo's that started shipping at the end of July.  X-gaming has changed the layout of the buttons and stick so this probably won't work for older solo's.

It would be easy to make one, just like I did, take a good quality picture of your tankstick- your x-arcade one that is, not the other ;) -with a tape measure across it so you can line up the photo ruler with the art program ruler, trace the buttons/stick/ball and then delete the image from it and your left with an actual size template.  I'd make a tankstick template for you but I don't own a tankstick.  If you can take the high rez picture with a tape measure across it, and send it to me, I'd be glad to create the template from it.

LOL. man...I never thought about doing that, not that I know how to in the first place. i'm decent with photoshop but don't have a clue as to what i'm doing in illustrator. I think all us tankstick owners would really appreciate a template! i'll get a pic to you ASAP. Thanks!

Forgot to mention, when taking the picture, put the tankstick on the floor and take the picture from above, as centered and straight on as possible to avoid any perspective/angles.  Come to think of it, it probably would have been good to prop up the front edge to eliminate the slope of the panel as well to make the surface flat like a table.  Use a pillow or something to keep the tape measure elevated as you take the picture.  Here is an example of what I used for the solo template:

Thanks for the pic MrB, attached is the x-arcade tankstick template I made from it.  SVG is for inkscape, eps is for other vector programs.

I hate to bump an old thread but I just wanted to thank Goddtodd for the original post.  I've got the non-TankStick Dual X-Arcade and I'm really eager to use that overlay (sans the spinner).  I'd love to see some other concepts...  I don't see why X-Arcade doesn't sell these themselves.  Their current logo is just ugly graphic design on an otherwise sharp product.
Current Games:  Arkanoid, DigDug CT, X-Men (in a Red Tent), 60-in-1 (Devastators), MAME (Asteroids), Millipede (not working, stripped)

Someday:  VirtuaPin, NBA Jam, Elway's QB, Burgertime, Warlords CT, Tempest

Just a idea.

What about to scale blank templates for all these X-arcade sticks.  then one could just take the template and put his own art on it and print?

is this idea too good to be true??

That would be great, it's something you think X-Arcade would host on their own site.

Check the very first post in this thread. You will need either Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator (preferred) to open/view it.

Read the rest of the page, if you have similar questions as I did.

Cheers,

GoddTodd

Hi GT,

Great work on the overlay mod, as well as giving us "noobs" something to work with when customizing our own.

I grabbed your .ai template.  It's absolutely great.

Just a couple of questions:

1.  Can I just take the .ai file to my local kinkos and have it printed on vinyl as is?  Are the dimensions a perfect fit for the 2-player (no trackball) stick?

3.  What did you use to affix your graphic on to your x-arcade joystick?

Thanks.

Ok, so I've finally got to the point where I'm ready to have a CPO printed up, on adhesive vinyl. What's the best way to go about sticking it to the top of the Control Panel?  :dizzy:

Plan A is that I'd have to completely remove the buttons and joysticks, then use an exacto-knife to cut the holes the appropriate size. The have the button-rings and dust washers cover any unsightly cutting. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also, how well will adhesive vinyl stick to the 'textured' surface of the X-Arcade CP? The prospect of sanding it down isn't terribly appealing, I admit.

Thanks for the input. :applaud:

In my case, I sitcked it into the surface without no problem.
I recomend removing the controls and the T-molding, appy the vinyl, and then assemble everything again.

I got all of the push-buttons out, after a lot of frustration.  :banghead:

How did you deal with the bolts for the joysticks? The ends on the outside of the CP are flush, and using pliers to loosen/tighten them while you remove the nut from the other side is going to damage them...

It's not easy, but with patience you'll be able to do it.
I loosed the bolts with a small plier from the inside of the CP, touching the screw nuts, and then finished the job with my beer hand.  :)
Also try a wrench, I used one to loose the bolts of joy2 because the plier didn't fit well...

:applaud: Thanks, I forgot to post back that I got them off without any problem.
Getting them back on and tight is where I'm likely to do damage to the heads, or my new artwork  :badmood:
I did notice that the MDF holes are actually square, so I'm hoping that when the time comes to re-install everything, they will provide enough torque to tighten.

For anyone else attempting to do this, make sure you label your wires / microswitches. (I found it easier to remove the microswitch from the pushbutton, attach a small 'tag' with the button number on it).

The inside nuts on the pushbuttons are actually glued to the button itself. This is where nearly all of my frustration came in trying to loosen those nuts... Take a small screwdriver and just gently pry the nut away from the button until you hear the 'crack' of the glue breaking free. Then like RJPE mentioned, use a small set of pliers to loosen the nut while holding on to the button with your other hand.
