Rottentomatoes ratings are pretty much spot on in my opinion. I rarely - if ever - have disagreed with their overall number or summary.

I think some of the footage from the early trailers did not make the final cut.  Particularly the scene showing them building the Enterprise in space.  They really went easy on the Enterprise footage which I think helped.  Seems like the first few movies spent 10 minutes or more flying around the ship so the audience could gaze at it.  This was much snappier.

Need I remind you of the seemingly endless flyby the Enterprise did on V-ger in the 1st movie. Damn, that was agonizingly bad and boring.
