#16 - Grobda - Winner: Mimic, Second: Cornchip
#17 - Bank Panic - Winner: ahofle, Second: jasonbar

I'm going to go jasonbar-style and pick a relative unknown for this round again.  The game for round #18 is Juno First (junofrst.zip). This is IMO one of the best unknown games of all time.  It's a pure skill game, a bit of a hybrid between an old school vertical shooter like Galaga/Galaxian and a true modern shootem' up (shmup) such as Raiden/DonPachi.  I love the sound effects in this game.

Rules:

- You can only use junofrst.zip, default settings (3 man settings, difficulty=1) - Single Credit only.

- Use any mame version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Monday, May 18th (11:59:59pm Eastern Daylight Time), 2009.

- High score wins (if tied, a tie-breaker game will be chosen at random).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine (if I'm not mistaken, RayB actually owns one of these gems).

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Oh, and I'm offering up an autographed (LOL just kidding) shrink-wrapped copy of Arcade Ambience 1986 as produced by www.gooddealgames.com for the winner of this one:

GOOD LUCK!

I'll be the first to add a gameplay tip:
Especially for the first few rounds, try to leave as many enemy ships as possible at the start of the round (don't kill many if possible).  At around 79 seconds on the timer, a small meteor looking object appears...shoot it and capture the spaceman that comes out.  Then go on a killing spree for mega points.
Don't forget you can go backwards, and don't forget about the hyperspace button!  Also, your thrust can destroy enemies.

Oooooo, nice pick. I know a guy locally with an original cab. (Though I'll have to play this in MAME)

Nice pick,  champ!  I used to play this tons on the Atari 8-bit computers.  The arcade game's even better.

Another underrated vertical shooter in this genre is Exerion--if you like Juno First, you might like Exerion too.

I don't think I ever saw this game back in the day, but they wheeled one out during the tournament last year at Funspot., so I played it a couple of times there.

I don't know as if I saw one in person back then, but it was common enough on Starcade.

Just to remind, the end-time is as posted above...except that he changed it to eastern time. I think it's better as Pacific, as I originally started the comp series.

Well, here's my first entry. The second score was I think the first time I played it. The third score is playing during this comp the first time and trying the strategy above. The first score is my second attempt and just going for broke.

I"m going to jump back in for the first time in a while.  What a GREAT entry!  I absolutely love this game.  As many arcade cabs as I played back in the early 80s I never saw this one anywhere, so I'm glad we now have it in MAME.  I totally agree with the other comment regarding Exerion - if you haven't tried it, DEFINITELY go do it right now (and stop practicing to beat my high score - I really want that arcade ambience CD).  ;)  Both of these games are successful at combining intense action with strategy - pretty rare.

Ahhh nice choice. They really need to make a "Retro Evolved" version of this game and release it on Xbox Live Arcade.

More scoring tips:
- On "waves" style stages, moving backward slowly while shooting as many of the alien waves.
- Don't be afraid of using your hyperspace. It replenishes every stage (one of the weaknesses of this game).

PS: what do we do if the score rolls over?   ;) (It rolls over after 999,999 -- I recommend you try and die as close to that score as possible  :P )

:laugh2: I guess we already have a winner.  Don't you own one of these cabs?  I'd love to see a recording of your game if you can do it in MAME.

LOL
Don't count yourselves out yet! I'm rusty and haven't rolled the score since '83 / '84

I own a machine but it's not playable at the moment. I had to brush up my skills using MAME like the rest of you (squished to a 19" horizontal monitor):

(so how does this work, do I update this post when I improve my score?)

(PS: MAME cab is running 0.78 DOS MAME. I'll try to install WolfMAME but I doubt I can find the time...)

More strategy tips:

- You'll see bullets and homing bullets appear out of nowhere. That indicates an alien will appear there about 3 seconds later (usually with a 2nd alien nearby). Shoot there in anticipation of them.

- Shoot homing bullets (purple ones) by "leading them" then moving backwards and then shooting them when they are above you.

- Back up slowly to move aliens off into the top "radar" area. Do this only until you see an alien appear off the bottom of the screen. From that point on, you're out of room to keep moving them off the top, so you have to shoot the ones in the active area.

- When you shoot the planet, all aliens stop shooting, but existing white bullets will keep moving. Homing bullets disappear. Use this knowledge to your advantage. Grab the space man and shoot as many aliens as possible.

- The moon always appears on the left side the first time, and on the right when it reappears after "missing" it.

- After doing the spaceman bonus, shoot all remaining aliens ASAP in order to maximize your time bonus.

- Aliens go through 4 stages with increasing "agression". The bright green guys like to shoot a lot, so move them off the screen if you can't shoot em.

- The purple saucer is hard to shoot if you "chase" it. Try to stay put and shoot straight up so it moves into your line of fire.

- After the second "wave" style level, you're best off just shooting most aliens appearing since there's too many to effectively move them off the top of the screen and wait.

- Hyperspace also causes all shooting to stop. You're best off hyperspacing while moving forward at a decent speed. If you're not moving, you'll just re-appear among aliens and get shot.

- If you have offset buttons on your cp, use a layout like the arcade:

o fire       O
  o warp   | joy

Fire really fast with index finger and keep thumb hovering over warp.

** Lastly, once you get a hang of the game, and how the aliens always appear in the same patterns, you'll want to jack the difficulty setting up to 5 or 6. Makes the game more challenging.**

Impressive, RayB...

But you are not a Jedi yet.

Sorry, couldn't resist.  ;)  Actually since this is basically just "Round 1" I'm expecting a sound thrashing at the start of the next bell.  Give it your best..

Challenge accepted.
Score thrashed.

484,130

So, as it turns out, after wave 16 things repeat and game play goes back to a slower pace like wave 1.

(My previous scores aren't saved! I thought highscore.dat took care of that!  :( )

Just for the record, don't stop if you happen to be close to rolling it over.  Just record the rollover and we'll just use the honor system for the actual score.

Hey you're right. The 2nd column is the wave/level #. That helps show if a score is legit.

I remember when I first saw this game on Starcade. It didn't impress me, neither in graphics nor in game play. Even now, I can't see how you could be interested in this game longer than level eight or whatever. Especially by that time they just get pissed and throw a million red dwarfs at you and then it's just try to survive time. Not to mention the shot collision detection on some of the baddies is loaded. I got a hundred thousand anyway.

I like to play this game on my 48-1 cabinet. It does have cool sound. Currently I am addicted to this and Gyruss.

Not like it matters with the current hi score, but do 48-1 scores count?

After about 6 or so games, my best is 105k & change.  No way will I be a contender this time around.   :(

So, does anybody else feel that this is Konami's answer to Williams' Defender?  It seems strikingly similar, after playing it a bit.  The ship appearance/death graphics are similar.  It's got a hyperspace.  Sounds are very similar.  There's a "radar" at the top.  You can go forwards *and* backwards.  There are humans to rescue.

It really gives me a Defender feel.  (despite the obvious horizontal/vertical basic difference...)

Okay, what radar screen??  Anyways, a new one for me. Did the 'get the alien' thing the first two screens, then just tried to kill everything and survive all the rest, though I got the alien a few times through that.

Hmmm, site maintenance? I can't post a picture, cos it's not in the options. Weird. Well, I got a hundred-fifty-two thousand.

Radar: see pic in top post.  You can see aliens at the top of the screen before they're in range.

That's basically a radar.  And yes, I'd say this is Konami's answer to Defender or Stargate.  The radar, sounds, visuals etc. all add up.  Juno First was released three years later though, so the hardware is a bit newer.  Just goes to show how advanced Defender was for its day.
